Xbox Game Pass stops working for other accounts when sharing points to the wrong console, the subscriber is signed out, or the subscription needs attention. Start with the console the other person uses, then check the account and platform rules that control access.
These fixes use Microsoft’s current sharing paths for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, and cloud gaming.
Set the shared console as Home Xbox
Use this when another profile on the same Xbox cannot install or launch Game Pass games even though the main account has an active subscription. Check first that the game is in the owner’s plan library on console, because the console plans carry different catalogues: Xbox Game Pass Essential covers 50+ games, Premium covers 200+ games plus Xbox published titles within a year of launch, and Ultimate covers 500+ games including day one releases. If the title is not in the owner’s plan, no Home Xbox setting will unlock it for the other profile. Home Xbox sharing lets other users on that console use the owner’s games and subscription benefits. Microsoft says this console sharing works with Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. A PC Game Pass subscription is tied to the individual Microsoft account, so it does not share through Home Xbox.
Sign in on the Xbox with the account that owns Game Pass.
Press the Xbox button, then open Profile & system, Settings, General, Personalization, and My home Xbox.
Choose Make this my home Xbox.
Sign in with the other account on that same console and launch or install the Game Pass game again.
Only one console can be the Home Xbox at a time. Microsoft limits Home Xbox changes to five per one-year period, so use this setting on the console your household shares.
Check the subscription owner and billing state
Confirm that Game Pass is active and attached to the Microsoft account you expect.
- 1.Sign in as the Game Pass owner and press the Xbox button.
- 2.Open Profile & system, Settings, Account, and Subscriptions.
- 3.Select the Game Pass subscription and check whether it is active, expired, suspended, or past due.
- 4.On a browser, go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that purchased Game Pass.
- 5.Choose Manage for the subscription and pay or update billing when Microsoft prompts you.
Use session sharing on a second Xbox
A second Xbox that is not the subscriber’s Home Xbox needs the subscriber signed in for sharing to work on that console. This is session sharing, not a permanent Home Xbox setup.
On the second Xbox, sign in with the Game Pass owner account first. Keep that subscriber account signed in.
Switch to or add the other player account through Profile & system, then launch the game from that account. The other account keeps access while the subscriber remains signed in on that Xbox.
For a household console that needs regular shared access, set that console as My home Xbox from the subscriber account.
Remove sharing from the wrong console
This fixes a Home Xbox setting that points Game Pass sharing at the wrong console.
On the console that currently has the wrong Home Xbox setting, sign in as the Game Pass owner.
Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system, Settings, General, Personalization, and My home Xbox.
Select Make this my home Xbox.
Choose Remove this as my home Xbox.
Go to the Xbox your household shares and set that console as Home Xbox with the owner account.
Restart and update the Xbox
Refresh the console after Home Xbox, billing, or account changes.
- 1.Hold the Xbox button on the controller to open Power Center, then choose Restart console and Restart.
- 2.For a hardware restart, hold the console power button for about 10 seconds until it shuts down, then turn it back on.
- 3.Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system, Settings, System, and Updates & downloads.
- 4.Select Console update available and follow the on-screen instructions.
- 5.Launch the Game Pass game from the other account after the console finishes restarting or updating.
Fix the affected profile or child account
The most common cause when only one account fails is damaged local profile data or a family setting blocking that specific account.
Remove the affected profile when one local account cannot see shared access. Press the Xbox button, open Profile & system, Settings, Account, and Remove accounts, then choose the affected account and confirm.
Add it back from Profile & system, Add or switch, and Add new. Enter the Microsoft account credentials for that profile, then test the Game Pass game again.
For a child or teen account, check age limits, multiplayer permissions, and privacy settings from Profile & system, Settings, Account, Privacy & online safety, and Xbox privacy. You can also use Account, Family settings, and Manage family members.
When a specific blocked game asks for permission, choose the organizer account on the permission screen, enter the organizer credentials, and approve the exception.
Match the account on Windows and cloud gaming
Use this when the problem is on a Windows PC, handheld, browser, smart TV, or streaming device instead of a shared Xbox console. Microsoft’s current PC and cloud rules do not follow Home Xbox sharing.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, sign in to both the Xbox app and Microsoft Store with the same Microsoft account that owns Game Pass.
In the Xbox app, select your gamerpic, choose Sign Out, then choose Sign In with the subscriber account. In Microsoft Store, use the profile icon to sign out and sign back in with that same Microsoft account.
For install or launch failures, open Microsoft Store, choose Library, then Get Updates, and update the Xbox app, Gaming Services, and Store components. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, sign in at xbox.com/play or in the Xbox app on a smart TV or streaming device with an account that has the required Game Pass subscription.
Skip outdated Game Pass sharing fixes
Older PC guides recommend one Microsoft Store account with a different Xbox app account. Microsoft’s current PC troubleshooting says game permissions are validated by signing in to both the Store and Xbox app with the same Microsoft account, so use the subscriber account in both places.
The old Xbox Game Pass mobile app is no longer the current path. Microsoft says the Game Pass mobile app stopped being supported on March 19, 2025, so use the Xbox app for browsing and remote installs, and use xbox.com/play for cloud gaming.
Do not use recurring billing toggles as a sharing repair. Access comes from an active subscription, the correct Home Xbox, the subscriber signed in on a non-Home Xbox, and the right account signed in for PC or cloud gaming.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two accounts use one Game Pass subscription on the same Xbox?
Yes. Set that console as the subscriber’s Home Xbox, then other accounts on that Xbox can use the owner’s games and subscription benefits.
Why does Game Pass work on my account but not my child’s account?
Home Xbox sharing can be correct while family controls still block a game, multiplayer, or privacy feature. Check the child account’s Xbox privacy and family settings, then approve an exception for blocked content.
Does Home Xbox sharing work for Xbox Cloud Gaming?
No. Cloud gaming access is tied to the signed-in account. Use xbox.com/play or the TV/streaming-device Xbox app with an account that has the required Game Pass subscription.
Can I share PC Game Pass with different accounts in Microsoft Store and the Xbox app?
No. Use the same Microsoft account in both Microsoft Store and the Xbox app. Microsoft’s current PC guidance validates Game Pass permissions through matching sign-ins.
