A WhatsApp message arrives, but its icon never appears at the top of your phone. The fix depends on whether Android is hiding the icon or the notification itself never arrives. Start with the display and permission settings, then check background restrictions if messages arrive only after you open WhatsApp.
Start with the missing icon
Swipe down from the top of the screen to look for a WhatsApp notification. If it appears in the notification shade but has no status-bar icon, start with the display controls. Missing banners and missing sounds are separate symptoms.
Open Settings > Notifications. Under General, turn off Hide silent notifications in status bar if your phone includes this switch. Test with a new incoming message after each change. If the switch is absent, the icon is still missing, or no notification appeared in the shade, check WhatsApp’s system notification permission next.
Allow WhatsApp notifications in Android
This restores notifications blocked at the app or notification-category level. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > WhatsApp. Enable notifications for WhatsApp.
Enable the notification categories you want to receive. A disabled category needs its own permission even when app notifications are on. Inside WhatsApp, open More options > Settings > Notifications. Enable the notifications you want WhatsApp to send.
Make a silent notification alerting
Pull down the notification shade to find a WhatsApp notification. Touch and hold that notification. Tap Settings to open its notification controls.
Choose Alerting on phones offering the Alerting and Silent controls. Google identifies alerting notifications as displaying the app icon in the status bar. Tap Apply if your phone shows that button. Use this shortcut to reach the affected notification’s controls when your phone’s settings menus differ.
Adjust Samsung and Redmi icon settings
Samsung and Redmi include their own status-bar controls on the devices below. Use the path that matches your phone.
On Galaxy devices with the One UI 7 menu, open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Show notification icons. Select an available option that displays icons. The choices depend on your software version.
On One UI 7 and later, Samsung says a pending notification may show as a dot in the status bar instead of an app icon, and that the dot disappears when you open the Notification panel. Check the panel before treating a missing WhatsApp icon as a fault.
For Galaxy notification categories, open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings. Enable Manage notification categories for each app. Return to App notifications > WhatsApp > Notification categories.
Open the affected category. Enable Allow notifications. Select Alert.
On the REDMI 13C 5G, open Settings > Notifications & status bar > Number of notification icons shown. Choose an available option that displays more icons.
If a full-screen Galaxy app hides the entire status bar, swipe down from the top to reveal it. Some icons appear only while the Notification panel or Quick settings panel is open. If a new message still produces no icon, check whether Do Not Disturb or another mode is hiding notifications.
Stop modes from hiding WhatsApp alerts
Check modes when notifications disappear during particular hours or activities. Do Not Disturb has display rules as well as controls for interruptions.
Swipe down to open Quick Settings. Tap Do Not Disturb to turn it off if it is active. Check for an active Bedtime, Driving, or custom mode.
To keep a mode running while allowing WhatsApp, open Settings > Modes on phones with this interface. Select the mode. Under Notification filters, open Apps. Allow WhatsApp.
For a mode with separate display controls, open More settings > Display settings > Display options for filtered notifications. Allow the notification display you need using the available controls.
On Galaxy devices with Samsung’s icon-hiding controls, touch and hold Do not disturb in Quick settings. Open Hide notifications. Turn off Hide all if it is enabled. Turn off Hide status bar icons.
If blocking keeps returning, review the mode’s automatic activation settings. On Galaxy, open the Do not disturb settings. Turn off the switch beside an unwanted schedule.
Restore delivery when messages arrive only after opening WhatsApp
Check the connection and background controls when the notification itself is delayed. Icon display settings do not address missing message delivery.
Open Settings > Network & internet, or Connections on phones using that label. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to test message delivery. For a problem over mobile data, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Mobile data usage. Turn Background data off.
Turn Background data back on. On phones using Google’s Data Saver interface, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data. Enable WhatsApp.
On a Pixel, turn off Battery Saver in Quick Settings. Battery Saver restricts background activity and delays some low-priority notifications. If you use Pixel’s Extreme Battery Saver, open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Extreme Battery Saver > Essential apps. Select WhatsApp.
On Galaxy devices with sleeping-app controls, open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits. In Sleeping apps, open More options > Remove apps. Select WhatsApp if it is listed. Tap Remove.
Repeat the removal in Deep sleeping apps if WhatsApp is listed there. Open Never sleeping apps > +. Select WhatsApp. Tap Add.
On the REDMI 13C, open Settings > Apps > Permissions > Background autostart. Enable WhatsApp. If notifications still do not arrive, check whether Android has paused WhatsApp or locked it inside Private Space.
Unpause WhatsApp and unlock Private Space
Use the matching check below if Focus mode, unused-app controls, or a locked Private Space has stopped WhatsApp’s notifications.
- 1.For Digital Wellbeing Focus mode, open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode and tap Turn off now. Paused apps cannot send notifications.
- 2.Review Set a schedule if the Focus mode pause keeps returning.
- 3.For unused-app restrictions, open WhatsApp’s App Info > Unused apps and turn off Pause app activity if unused.
- 4.Reopen WhatsApp.
- 5.Recheck its notification permission through Settings > Notifications > App notifications > WhatsApp.
- 6.If WhatsApp is installed inside Private Space on a supported Android 15 or later device, open Settings > Security & privacy > Private space and authenticate to unlock it. A locked Private Space completely stops the apps inside it.
Try an update and a restart
Use these general app troubleshooting steps after checking notification permissions, display settings, and background controls. They address app problems without promising a specific repair for a missing icon.
Open Google Play Store > your profile icon > Manage apps & devices. Under Updates available, update WhatsApp.
To restart a Pixel 6 or later, including Fold, hold Power and Volume up for a few seconds. Tap Restart.
On a compatible Galaxy device, hold Side and Volume down for a few seconds instead. Tap Restart. Confirm with Restart.
For another general troubleshooting check on Galaxy, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage. Tap Clear cache. Reopen WhatsApp. Test with a new incoming message.
Bring back missing alerts on iPhone
iPhone displays alerts on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, and as Banners; it does not use Android-style persistent app icons in the status bar. Open Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp. Enable Allow Notifications.
Under Alerts, select Lock Screen, Notification Center, or Banners according to where you want messages to appear. If you use Scheduled Summary, choose Immediate Delivery under Notification Delivery.
Inside WhatsApp, open Settings > Notifications. Enable Show notifications under Message notifications. Enable it under Group notifications too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are notifications missing for only one archived conversation?
WhatsApp says archived chats normally notify only for mentions or replies. To unarchive one through WhatsApp Web, click Archived above the chat list. Hover over the conversation and open its downward-chevron menu. Click Unarchive chat.
Does muting a WhatsApp group explain a missing status-bar icon?
Yes, for that group. WhatsApp says that if you get notifications for individual chats but never for group chats, you should check whether the group is muted and whether group notifications are turned on. A muted group can still arrive without alerting you, and Android can keep a silent notification out of the status bar. To unmute, open the group and tap its name. Tap Notifications, then turn off Mute under Messages or Calls. If the notification then shows in the shade but stays silent, turn off Hide silent notifications in status bar and set the WhatsApp notification to Alerting.
Why does my linked Android tablet miss WhatsApp notifications?
Notification permissions, background data, and battery restrictions apply on the linked device itself. Run the Android checks above on that tablet or secondary phone. Reconnect the primary phone if it has been offline for days.
Should I reinstall WhatsApp to fix the icon?
Keep reinstallation as a general troubleshooting fallback. It does not guarantee an icon repair, and uninstalling can erase local app data. Before uninstalling, open WhatsApp’s More > Settings > Chats > Chat backup and tap Back up. Confirm that the backup completed and retain access to the same Google Account and phone number.
