You double-click a ZIP on your Mac, but an “unable to expand” error leaves the files out of reach. Start by checking the download and available storage, then tackle the fix that matches the failure. Damaged data calls for a replacement archive; unsupported compression or encryption calls for a compatible extractor.

Start with a complete download

Check that the entire ZIP has arrived before trying to open it.

  1. 1.In Safari, click Show Downloads to check the transfer.
  2. 2.For a paused download, click Resume beside it. Otherwise, wait for downloading to finish.
  3. 3.Locate the completed .zip file in Finder and double-click it. After successful extraction, the extracted item appears beside the archive.
  4. 4.If the completed download still won't expand, delete that downloaded copy and download it again from its original source.

Make room for the extracted files

This fixes extraction failures caused by insufficient storage.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.

Review the large storage categories for files or apps you no longer need. The expanded contents need space beyond the ZIP's compressed size.

Remove unneeded files or apps.

Alternatively, move files to external storage to make room.

Empty the Trash to release the space occupied by deleted files.

Double-click the ZIP again in Finder.

Download an iCloud-only ZIP to your Mac

If the archive is stored only in iCloud Drive, download it locally before extracting it.

Open iCloud Drive in Finder.

Control-click the archive and choose Download Now.

Wait for the download to finish.

Double-click the ZIP.

To retain the local copy, Control-click the archive and choose Keep Downloaded.

Try another app to open the archive

Install The Unarchiver using Download on its official website. Its vendor lists support for AES-encrypted ZIPs, Zip64, ZIPX, unusual compression methods, and non-Latin filenames.

Control-click the ZIP in Finder and choose Open With.

Select The Unarchiver.

For another extractor, install Keka using Download on its official website.

Control-click the ZIP in Finder, choose Open With, then choose Keka. Dragging the archive onto Keka's window or Dock icon is another supported way to open it.

Enter the sender's password when Keka prompts for one.

Tip: To make a working extractor your default, select the ZIP in Finder, choose File > Get Info, select the app under Open with, and click Change All.

Request a fresh copy of a damaged archive

Damaged archive data prevents extraction even when the download is complete.

Ask the sender to recreate the ZIP from the original files and resend it.

On the sender's Mac, select the original files in Finder.

Control-click the selection and choose Compress.

Send the newly created archive to the recipient.

Download the replacement completely.

Open the replacement ZIP. Switching extractors does not restore missing or corrupt data.

If Safari's automatic opening triggers the error, open Safari > Settings > General.

Deselect Open “safe” files after downloading. This controls automatic opening; it does not repair the ZIP.

Download the archive again.

Open it manually in Finder or your chosen extractor.

Restore folder access and permissions

For an archive your account cannot read or a destination it cannot write to, open the selected item's File > Get Info > Sharing & Permissions pane in Finder. These settings address access problems, not every expansion error.

If the permission settings are locked, unlock them. Enter administrator credentials when requested.

Give your account permission to read the archive and Read & Write access to the destination folder.

For an extractor denied access to Desktop, Documents, or Downloads, enable the relevant folder under Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files & Folders if the app is listed. The relevant folder contains the ZIP or is its extraction destination.

Use Terminal for extraction and error details

If you corrected folder access, retry extraction with that app before moving on. When a fresh download still fails, Terminal provides another extraction tool and integrity checks to help you choose between a replacement archive and a compatible extractor.

Open Terminal.

Run unzip -t "/full/path/archive.zip", replacing the example path with your ZIP's actual path and keeping the quotation marks. This tests the archive; it does not repair it.

For a file listing, run unzip -l "/full/path/archive.zip" with the same path replacement.

To attempt extraction, run unzip "/full/path/archive.zip" -d "/full/path/new-output-folder". Replace both paths, using a fresh output folder as the destination.

Enter the sender's password if prompted. Typed password characters are not displayed, and unsupported encryption requires a compatible extractor.

For reported corruption, download another copy or request a replacement archive.

For an unsupported-format error, open the ZIP with a compatible extractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the extractor freezes instead of showing an error?

Press Command-Q to quit it. If the app is unresponsive, press Option-Command-Esc, select the app, and click Force Quit. For a stuck Finder, select it and click Relaunch. Reopen the archive afterward. Quitting a frozen app does not repair damaged ZIP data.

Can I recover a damaged ZIP when the sender cannot replace it?

Apple's zip tool supports limited archive-structure repair. Preserve the original, then open Terminal and run zip -F "/full/path/damaged.zip" --out "/full/path/repaired.zip", replacing the paths. If that fails, run zip -FF "/full/path/damaged.zip" --out "/full/path/repaired-ff.zip". Test the resulting archive with unzip -t "/full/path/repaired.zip", using the output filename you created, before extracting it. Structural repair does not guarantee recovery of missing or corrupt file data.

Why did I receive .z01 and .z02 files along with a ZIP?

Those filenames are used for parts of a split ZIP. Obtain every part and keep them together with their original names. For supported split ZIPs, open Terminal and run zip -s 0 "/full/path/archive.zip" --out "/full/path/combined.zip", replacing both paths. Then extract combined.zip. This command is not a universal joiner for arbitrary .001 files.

Can I extract a ZIP in my browser without installing an app?

Yes. Open ezyZip, click Select file to unzip, and choose the ZIP. Click Save beside a file to save it. For an encrypted archive, enter the password and click Set Password. In browsers that support bulk saving, click Save All, select an empty destination, and grant folder access. The vendor says extraction runs locally in the browser.
