You click 1Password and get a blank menu, a missing login, or nothing at all. The fix depends on whether Chrome cannot open the extension, fill a password, or connect to your account. Start with a restart, then follow the section that matches what you see.

Restart Chrome and unlock 1Password

Fully quit Chrome. Reopen Chrome. Open 1Password from the toolbar.

Unlock it with your account password or the offered device authentication. Sign in again if prompted. If you see “The database was terminated” or “The 1Password browser extension needed to restart” but the extension now works, close the error tab.

If the problem continues, restart your computer. Reopen Chrome. Unlock 1Password.

Test the extension again before moving to another fix. A locked extension needs unlocking before it can fill your credentials, even when nothing has crashed.

Restore the button and website access

For a missing toolbar button, open Chrome’s menu > Extensions > Manage Extensions. Turn on 1Password if it is disabled. Open the toolbar’s Extensions button. Select the thumbtack beside 1Password to keep its button visible.

If the extension opens but does not work on a website, return to Manage Extensions > 1Password > Details. Set website access to On all sites, or permit only the affected site. For a failure limited to Incognito windows, turn on Allow in incognito on that same details page. If the button and permissions are correct but 1Password still fails, update Chrome and the extension next.

Bring Chrome and the extension up to date

The current 1Password extension requires Chrome 140 or later on a supported computer. If your browser is older, update it before troubleshooting further.

On Mac or Windows, open Chrome’s menu > Help > About Google Chrome to let Chrome check for updates. Select Relaunch when offered. On Linux, update Chrome through your package manager. On a Chromebook, update ChromeOS.

Check the extension’s version through Chrome’s menu > Extensions > Manage Extensions > 1Password > Details. If its name includes desktop app required, replace that obsolete edition with the current extension from the official 1Password download page. Select Download for Chrome.

Select Add to Chrome in the linked Chrome Web Store listing. Confirm Add extension. To check manually for extension updates, enter chrome://extensions in Chrome’s address bar. Turn on Developer mode.

Select Update. This checks all installed extensions for updates. Close extension pop-ups and settings pages so a downloaded update can finish installing, or restart Chrome.

Bring back missing logins and autofill

These settings address missing suggestions, hidden logins, and website-specific filling failures. Open the extension’s account menu > Settings > Autofill & save. Enable Offer to fill and save passwords.

If you previously hid prompts on a page, open Hidden pages in the same settings area. Select Reset hidden pages.

If a saved login is missing, choose All Accounts from the extension’s account menu. Open Filter list. Include the vaults containing your logins. Select Save changes.

For an account with a different password, select Lock 1Password from the account menu. Unlock with that account’s password.

To trigger filling directly, search for the login in the extension. Select Open & Fill. Visiting a page alone does not guarantee that 1Password will fill it.

If that opens the wrong page, open the Login item’s Edit screen. Correct the website field to the actual sign-in URL.

If one item still does not appear as a suggestion, open it in the desktop app. Select Edit. Open the Autofill behavior button beside its website address.

Replace an unintended Never fill on this website setting with Fill anywhere on this website or Only fill on this exact host, according to where you want the login offered. Exact-host matching distinguishes both ports and www. Save the item.

For competing browser prompts, open the extension’s account menu > Settings > General. Enable Make 1Password the default password manager in this browser.

To sign in while a site-specific filling problem remains, select the needed field in the saved item to copy it. Paste the value into the corresponding website field.

Reconnect the desktop app

If you use 1Password 8 with Chrome, quit the desktop app first. On Mac, select the 1Password menu-bar icon > Quit; on Windows or Linux, choose the app’s sidebar ellipsis > Quit. Reopen 1Password. Unlock the app.

On Mac or Windows, open the desktop app’s Settings > Advanced. Enable Install updates automatically. The unlocked app notifies you of available updates. In the desktop account menu, open Settings > Browser.

Enable Connect with 1Password in the browser. In the extension’s account menu, open Settings > General. Enable Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app. Restart the desktop app.

Restart Chrome. On Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > App Background Activity. These labels vary on older macOS releases. Enable 1Password.

If the Mac app reports that it cannot connect to the extension, use Finder to move Chrome directly into /Applications. Move 1Password directly into /Applications as well.

If the connection toggle remains unavailable after allowing background activity, deselect Reopen windows when logging back in in the Mac’s restart dialog. Restart the Mac.

On Linux, uninstall any Snap or Flatpak installation of the app or browser that is blocking integration. Reinstall the affected software using the vendor’s traditional distribution package from the 1Password downloads page or Chrome downloads page. For an explicit browser-identity or code-signature error, update 1Password and fully quit and reopen Chrome to complete pending browser updates.

Unstick a blank or unresponsive password menu

Chrome Developer Tools’ Update on Reload setting interferes with 1Password and causes blank, slow, or unresponsive pop-ups and field menus. Open Chrome’s menu > More Tools > Developer Tools. The shortcut is Command+Option+I on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux.

Choose Application > Service Workers. Turn off Update on Reload. Close Developer Tools. Try opening 1Password again.

If you need that setting for development work, open Chrome’s Profile button > Add Chrome profile to create a separate environment for 1Password. Complete the new profile’s setup. Install 1Password there using Download for Chrome on the official extension page.

Select Add to Chrome in the linked store listing. Confirm Add extension.

Resolve account sign-in problems

When setup or reauthorization fails, compare your email address, Secret Key, and account password with the correct Emergency Kit. Select the account’s proper .com, .ca, or .eu region.

If two-factor authentication codes are rejected, correct your device’s date and time. Try another authentication code. Two-factor authentication during account authorization is separate from ordinary extension unlocking.

For sign-in or synchronization failures, check the 1Password status page for an incident affecting account services before reinstalling repeatedly. If 1Password.com cannot connect, try a reliable network. Temporarily disconnect your VPN to test whether it is interfering with the account connection.

Disable browser content blockers or other extensions for a connection test. Re-enable them individually to identify interference.

An account explicitly marked frozen has restrictions on browser filling, editing, and adding items. For a web-billed subscription, sign in to 1Password.com. Choose Billing > Subscribe. For an Apple or Google purchase, manage the subscription through that store; family or team members should contact their organizer or owner.

If account access still fails, try another supported browser or device, then follow 1Password’s account connection troubleshooting for a persistent connection problem.

Repair or reinstall the extension

If Chrome explicitly reports that 1Password is corrupted, open Chrome’s menu > Extensions > Manage Extensions. Select Repair on the affected extension. Confirm Repair extension. If corruption returns, check for software or malware modifying extension files, as Google recommends.

For an unresolved extension failure, right-click the 1Password toolbar icon. Choose Remove from Chrome. Open the official 1Password extension download page. Select Download for Chrome.

Choose Add to Chrome in the linked Chrome Web Store listing. Confirm Add extension. Open 1Password.

Unlock or sign in again. Complete the requested account authentication after reinstalling before testing whether filling works.

Get help with a failure that persists

Send 1Password support a diagnostic report and a description of exactly what fails.

  1. 1.Right-click the 1Password toolbar icon and select Settings.
  2. 2.Open Help and select Generate report.
  3. 3.For a desktop integration problem, also open the app’s Help > Send Diagnostic Report. On Windows and Linux, access Help through the sidebar ellipsis.
  4. 4.Email the .1pdiagnostics file and your problem description to [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 1Password Chrome extension work on phones?

Mobile Chrome uses system Autofill. On Android, open the 1Password account menu > Settings > Autofill > Open Settings and select 1Password. In Chrome 141 or later, open the ellipsis > Settings > Autofill services, select Autofill using another service, then select Restart Chrome. On iPhone or iPad, open system Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords and enable AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys and 1Password.

Why does 1Password lock every time I close Chrome?

Quitting the browser locks the standalone extension. For its other locking behavior, open the extension’s account menu > Settings > Security & privacy and review Automatically lock 1Password, Lock after system is idle for, and Lock when device goes to sleep. With desktop integration enabled, adjust locking in the desktop app’s account menu > Settings > Security.

What if my work computer prevents me from updating or removing 1Password?

Ask IT to review ExtensionInstallForcelist, any pinned extension version, and ExtensionSettings update-source overrides in Chrome’s management configuration. A forced extension cannot be removed by the user, and a pinned version prevents normal updates beyond that version.

Can I recover a generated password that was not saved to my login?

Yes. Open 1Password from the toolbar, select the password generator button, then open Password Generator History. Hover over the relevant entry, select its down arrow, and choose Copy. Open the intended Login item > ellipsis > Edit. Paste the recovered password into the password field, then select Save.
