Snapchat filters can disappear, refuse to load, or work in one place and fail in another. The cause is usually a disabled Snapchat setting, a missing permission, a weak connection, cached app data, or a Lens your device cannot run. Start with the quick checks, then move through the exact app, phone, and account settings that control Filters and Lenses.
Start with the fast resets
These clear the common loading hiccups before you change deeper settings.
- 1.Completely close Snapchat, then open it again.
- 2.Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then reload the Snapchat Camera.
- 3.Restart your phone, then open Snapchat and test the Lens carousel again.
- 4.Choose a different Lens from the carousel to check whether only one Lens is failing.
- 5.Update Snapchat from the app store on your device.
Turn Filters back on inside Snapchat
Use this when camera effects still open, but Filters seem missing or inconsistent. Snapchat has its own Filters switch, and it needs to be on.
Open Snapchat and go to My Account.
Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
Choose Manage under Additional Services.
Turn Filters on.
Return to the Camera screen and try the Filter again. This switch covers Filters only — Snapchat notes that Lenses are not the same thing as Filters — so if a Lens is the thing failing, test it from the Lens carousel instead.
Allow location for Geofilters and venue Filters
Geofilters, Location Stickers, and Venue Filters need Snapchat location access. On iPhone, open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services, and make sure Location Services is on.
Open Snapchat in that same list and choose While Using the App or another allowed option. For location-specific Filters that need a more exact position, turn on Precise Location.
On Android, open Settings, then Location, then App location permissions, then Snapchat. Choose Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or allow when I share, or Allow all the time, then turn on Use precise location when an exact location is needed.
If location is already allowed and location-based Filters still do not appear, clear Snapchat's cache next.
Give Snapchat camera and microphone access
Open iPhone Settings.
Go to Privacy & Security.
Open Camera.
Turn Snapchat on.
Go back to Privacy & Security, open Microphone, and turn Snapchat on there too.
On Android, open Settings.
Open Apps, then Snapchat.
Tap Permissions.
Allow Camera, Location, and Microphone with an allowed option such as Allow only while using the app.
Tip: On Android, also keep the global Camera access and Microphone access switches on under Security & privacy, Privacy, and Privacy controls.
Clear Snapchat cache without deleting your Snaps
This fixes stale app data that can block Filters, Lenses, and camera effects from loading correctly.
On iPhone, open Snapchat and go to My Account.
Tap the gear icon, then open My Privacy & Data under App & Privacy.
Choose Clear Cache under Manage My Data.
Tap Clear.
On Android, open Snapchat, go to My Account, and tap the gear icon.
Open My Privacy & Data, then choose Clear Data under Manage My Data.
Tap Clear Cache, then tap Clear.
Snapchat says clearing cache can troubleshoot issues and does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.
Switch off Data Saver and update the app
Data Saver can make Lens and Filter content slower to load, especially on mobile data.
- 1.Open Snapchat, tap the gear icon from the Profile screen, then go to My Privacy & Data under App & Privacy.
- 2.Open Data Saver under Manage My Data.
- 3.On iPhone, turn Data Saver off. On Android, uncheck Data Saver.
- 4.On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, tap the My Account button or your photo, then use Update next to Snapchat or Update All.
- 5.On Android, open Google Play Store, tap the profile icon, open Manage apps & device, tap See details under Updates available, then use Update next to Snapchat or Update all.
Check device support before chasing old fixes
Snapchat app support currently requires Android 5.0 or newer, iOS 14.0 or higher, or Fire OS 5+. Lenses have a broader support note from Snapchat: Apple devices with iOS 12 or newer and most Android devices with Android 4.4 or newer can use Lenses, but the current app install requirements are stricter.
Some older or limited devices cannot run every Lens. If one Lens fails, choose another Lens from the carousel; if Lenses still fail on that device, try Snapchat on a different supported phone or tablet.
On Fire tablets, install or update Snapchat through the Amazon Appstore. Snapchat's Fire OS 5+ Amazon Appstore version includes core features such as Chat, Stories, Lenses, and Spotlight, so unofficial sideloading is not the current fix.
Do not reinstall or patch the old standalone Snap Camera app as a repair step. Snapchat says Snap Camera is no longer available as a standalone app; use Snapchat for Web or Snapchat's current web and browser options instead.
Remove account and app conflicts
Unauthorized third-party apps, tweaks, or plugins used with Snapchat can lock or impair an account. Uninstall any unauthorized Snapchat add-on, then update Snapchat to the latest version before logging back in.
If your account is temporarily locked and Snapchat offers self-unlock, use a browser to go to accounts.snapchat.com, sign in, and select Unlock. Permanent locks do not use that self-unlock path.
For connected partner apps, open Snapchat, tap the profile icon, open the gear icon, then choose Connected Apps. Select the app and tap Remove.
If Filters still fail after removing conflicts, report the broken Filter or Lens from Snapchat settings.
Check family restrictions and report the bug
The most common managed-device cause is a privacy restriction that blocks Snapchat from using location, the camera, or the microphone.
On an iPhone with Screen Time controls, open Settings, then Screen Time, choose the child name under Family, and open Content & Privacy Restrictions. Under Privacy, check Location Services, Microphone, or the relevant setting and allow changes so Snapchat is not locked in a denied state.
On a child's Android device managed with Family Link, the parent can open Family Link, select the child, then go to Screen time, Time limits, App limits, Snapchat, App details, and Permissions. Switch on the permission Snapchat needs.
When every setting is correct and Filters still do not work, open Snapchat, go to My Account, tap the gear icon, then open Support & Safety under App & Privacy. Choose Bugs and Suggestions, then Report a Bug, and follow the in-app steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are Snapchat Geofilters not showing up?
Geofilters need Location Services. Allow Snapchat to use location while the app is open, and turn on Precise Location when the Filter depends on your exact location.
Does clearing Snapchat cache delete Memories or Chats?
No. Snapchat says clearing cache can help troubleshoot issues and does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.
Why do some Snapchat Lenses work but others do not?
Some Lenses may not work on older or limited hardware. Try another Lens from the carousel, then test Snapchat on a different supported device if needed.
Can I still fix filters by reinstalling Snap Camera?
No. Snapchat says the standalone Snap Camera app is no longer available. Use Snapchat for Web or current Snapchat camera options instead.
