Safari can't connect to iCloud Private Relay, and you need to get a website open. Start with Apple's service status, then check the affected website and your connection. A temporary bypass lets you test ordinary browsing with Private Relay protection turned off for that website or connection.

Check whether Private Relay is down

Open Apple's System Status page and look for iCloud Private Relay. If Apple lists an incident, retry after it resolves the problem. Changing your device's settings won't repair a service outage.

If there's no incident listed, or you need to browse during an outage, try the website exception below. For trouble across multiple websites, move on to testing your connection.

Let one website see your IP address

For a single website that won't load, try a website exception. On an iPhone running iOS 27, open the affected page in Safari and tap Page Menu > Privacy & Security > Show IP Address. The exception lasts until you leave the website or close its tab.

On iPad, open the affected website and use Page Menu > Privacy & Security > Show IP Address when that option appears. On iPadOS 26, the path is Page Menu > More > Show IP Address.

On Mac, open the affected website in Safari and choose View > Reload and Show IP Address. This bypasses Private Relay for that website; it doesn't repair the relay connection.

Try a different internet connection

On your iPhone or iPad, select another network in Settings > Wi-Fi.

For a cellular test instead, turn off Wi-Fi on a cellular-capable iPhone or iPad with active service.

Retry the same website in Safari on the other connection.

If it works there, restart your original network's modem and router using the manufacturer's procedure.

If the failure continues only on the original network, contact its ISP or administrator.

Tip: A successful test on another connection narrows the trouble to the original network.

Bypass a network that blocks Private Relay

Network filtering that blocks Private Relay prevents the service from connecting.

For iPhone or iPad Wi-Fi, open Settings > Wi-Fi, then tap the information button (a circled i) beside your network. Apple calls it either the Actions Available button or the More Info button.

Turn off Limit IP Address Tracking to bypass Private Relay on that network.

For an iPhone with one cellular line, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. If your iPhone has multiple lines, or lists your phone number under SIMs instead of showing Cellular Data Options, select the affected line under SIMs.

Turn off Limit IP Address Tracking for that line.

On a cellular iPad with one plan, open Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options. With multiple plans, select the affected plan under Cellular Plans.

Turn off Limit IP Address Tracking for that plan.

For Mac Wi-Fi, open System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Details. For Ethernet, select the Ethernet connection under Network and open Advanced.

Turn off Limit IP address tracking for the selected connection.

Configure each cellular line and Mac network service separately. Network exceptions also apply to other devices using the same Apple Account, so check those devices after changing the setting.

Turn the tracking control back on when you're ready to retry Private Relay.

Pause Private Relay when you need to browse

If several websites fail and you need a broader temporary bypass, pause Private Relay. Turning it off and back on is supported, but cycling the switch does not guarantee a connection repair.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay.

Turn off Private Relay.

Choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow for a temporary pause, which ends automatically within 24 hours. Choose Turn Off Private Relay to leave it disabled until you enable it again.

On Mac, open System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay.

Turn off Private Relay.

Choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow or Turn Off Private Relay.

Click Done to finish.

When you're ready to retry, return to the same settings and enable Private Relay.

On Mac, click Done again.

If you can't enable the feature, check that you have an individual iCloud+ subscription or access through Family Sharing. Private Relay requires that subscription.

Sign in if prompted.

Check for conflicting VPN and filtering software

An incompatible VPN, firewall, antivirus, parental-control, or content-filtering feature interferes with the connection.

Open your installed VPN or security app.

Temporarily disable its VPN connection or filtering feature using the app's controls. Button names vary by app.

Retry the affected website in Safari.

On a Mac showing Some of your system settings prevent Private Relay from working, turn off the incompatible networking app identified by the alert.

If you need to uninstall that app, follow its vendor's removal instructions.

For a work or school device, ask your administrator to check the iCloud Private Relay management restriction and any network blocking.

Consult the administrator before changing required managed profiles.

Restart your device and install Safari updates

If the Private Relay checks haven't helped, move on to these general connection and Safari troubleshooting steps.

  1. 1.On Mac, reload Safari with View > Reload Page or Command-R. If the page still fails, quit and reopen Safari.
  2. 2.To restart an iPhone, open Settings > General > Shut Down, drag the power-off slider, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. 3.To restart an iPad, hold the top button and a volume button. On models with a Home button, hold only the top button. Drag the power-off slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the top button to restart.
  4. 4.To restart a Mac, choose Apple menu > Restart.
  5. 5.For iPhone or iPad updates, back up your device and connect it to power and Wi-Fi. Open Settings > General > Software Update, then select Download and Install if offered and follow the onscreen instructions.
  6. 6.For Mac updates, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install the offered update. Apple distributes current Safari updates through operating-system updates.

Reset network settings as a last resort

Save a network reset for persistent connection trouble after the earlier checks. On iPhone and iPad, it removes saved networks and non-managed VPN settings. It won't fix an Apple service outage.

On iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Reconnect to your network afterward. Managed network settings remain.

On iPadOS 26, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Reconnect to your network afterward.

On an updated Mac running macOS Ventura or later, test a fresh network location while keeping the previous configuration available. Open System Settings > Network > More > Locations > Edit Locations, click +, name the location, and click Done. Exit Network settings to complete the switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download or reinstall Private Relay separately?

No. Private Relay comes with an iCloud+ subscription and is built into Settings on iPhone and iPad and System Settings on Mac, so you turn it on under [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay rather than downloading it.

Why did Private Relay stop working while I was traveling?

Private Relay switches off automatically in unsupported countries or regions. It resumes when you return to a supported region. Apple notifies you when Private Relay is unavailable and again when it's active.

What should I change if a website gets my location wrong?

On iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay > IP Address Location. Select Maintain General Location to give websites more precise location information than Use Country and Time Zone. This addresses location compatibility; it doesn't fix a relay outage.

Should I clear Safari history to fix Private Relay?

Clearing history and website data is a general Safari troubleshooting step. It won't repair an Apple relay outage, and it removes browsing data and can sign you out of websites.
