Razer Chroma stops working when the app is outdated, Synapse 4 loses the device, Windows takes over lighting, or game sync is disabled. Start with the fastest controls first, then use the deeper Synapse repairs only when the lights still stay dark. These fixes use current Razer and Microsoft support steps from August 2026.

1. Refresh the Razer Chroma app

Go to Razer Chroma on Razer's official product page. Under Try the new Razer Chroma App, choose Download for Windows for Windows 10 or 11 64-bit (x64), or Download for MAC for macOS 15 Sequoia and above on Apple Silicon.

On Windows, run the installer. Click Yes at User Account Control, then click CONTINUE, INSTALL, and LAUNCH.

On a Mac, run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions instead; there is no User Account Control prompt, then open the app from Launchpad. Log in with your Razer ID to use full Chroma features.

Razer says installing the current Chroma App uninstalls Razer Synapse 3, so let the installer finish the upgrade.

2. Reset the lighting effect in Synapse 4

Launch Razer Synapse 4. Select your Razer device from the device list or DASHBOARD, then click the LIGHTING tab. Under EFFECTS, choose Quick Effects or Advanced Effects.

3. Bring keyboard brightness back up

Press and hold FN + F12 together to increase keyboard LED brightness. If brightness still does not increase, go to the Razer icon in the taskbar and click Exit Synapse.

Check the keyboard LEDs after Synapse closes. Open Razer Synapse again, create a new profile, then choose Quick Effects or edit the advanced lighting effects.

Most Razer keyboards use FN + F12, and Razer directs other models to the device user guide for the right brightness shortcut.

4. Fix device detection before changing effects

Plug the Razer device directly into the computer instead of a USB hub. Restart the PC after a first installation or after an update.

Run a Razer Synapse repair if the device still is not detected. Make sure Razer Synapse is not running in compatibility mode.

5. Release control from Windows Dynamic Lighting

Open Settings. Click Personalization, click Dynamic Lighting, then turn off Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.

To keep Windows Dynamic Lighting on, expand Background light control. Drag the registered RGB controller app, such as Razer Chroma, to the top of the list. Background light control ranks installed apps that register as background controllers, not the devices themselves.

Review Compatible apps in the foreground always control lighting, Brightness, and Effects. Turning off Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices releases the device so Razer Chroma controls the lighting again.

6. Turn on Chroma Apps for games

Launch Razer Chroma > Chroma Apps and toggle CHROMA APPS on. Select the game or app and toggle it on.

If the app is not detected, launch it once so Chroma Apps detects it. The Razer device and the game both need Razer Chroma support for game sync.

7. Reconnect third-party RGB gear

Install or open the Razer Chroma App. Select Chroma Connect under Modules, then connect the supported third-party RGB device.

Open Chroma Connect again under Modules. Enable the device so Chroma Connect customizes its lighting through the Razer Chroma App, then select Quick Effects or Advanced Effects to configure lighting.

Razer says Chroma Connect comes pre-installed with the Razer Chroma App.

8. Clean reinstall Razer Synapse 4

This fixes recurring Chroma failures tied to a broken Synapse install, device detection errors, or persistent software faults. Verify Razer Synapse 4 is installed, then back up the profiles you need to keep.

Right-click the Razer Synapse 4 system tray icon. Select Exit All Apps, then open Settings.

Click Apps, click Installed apps, then search for Razer. Click the ellipsis icon and select Uninstall, then click Yes at User Account Control.

In RAZER GAMING SOFTWARE, click the ellipsis icon in the upper-right corner of the INSTALLED APPS tab. Click Uninstall All, click UNINSTALL, then close the window after uninstall completes.

Disconnect non-essential Razer devices. Run Windows System File Checker, update Windows, and install and run Intel Driver & Support Assistant on supported Intel systems.

Restart the PC. Download and install the latest Razer Synapse 4.

9. Ignore old Synapse 3 Chroma Connect fixes

Older fixes point to Razer Synapse 3 > MODULES > CHROMA CONNECT, and that path is legacy guidance. Current Razer support centers on Synapse 4 and the standalone Razer Chroma App.

Razer says Synapse 3 cloud services ended February 3, 2026, and new features focus on Synapse 4. Install Razer Synapse 4 and migrate existing Synapse 3 profiles with the Profile Migration Tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Razer Chroma on a Mac?

Yes. Razer lists the Chroma App Mac Preview for macOS 15 Sequoia and above on Mac with Apple Silicon.

Why does Razer Chroma work in Synapse but not in a game?

Turn on Chroma Apps in Razer Chroma, then launch the game once so Chroma Apps detects it. The game and RGB device also need Razer Chroma support.

Can Wallpaper Engine break Razer Chroma lighting?

Yes. Razer documents conflicts with Steam Wallpaper Engine. Right-click Wallpaper Engine in the system tray, open Settings, go to the General tab, click Remove High Priority, approve the prompt, and restart.

Is there a browser-based fallback for basic lighting effects?

Yes. Razer Synapse Web switches between Chroma quick effects on a supported Razer device running current firmware, after you click Add Device and allow the browser to connect. Razer verifies it on Windows 11 or macOS 26 with Chrome, Edge, or Opera; other Chromium browsers may work but are not verified. For advanced effects, use the Razer Chroma App.
