A Snapchat picture that won't load leaves you staring at a Snap you can't open. Start with your connection, then work through the loading settings, app updates, and cache checks below. Before you reinstall, check that your Memories are backed up and the picture hasn't expired.

Try another connection first

Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Snapchat recommends a stable connection when Snaps won't load.

Retry the picture. If it opens on the other connection, focus on the network that failed.

For weak cellular reception, move somewhere with a better signal. For Wi-Fi, move closer to the router.

On hotel, airport, or café Wi-Fi, open the network's sign-in notification or a new browser page.

Complete the network's login or acceptance screen before retrying Snapchat.

If other apps and devices also can't get online through your home network, restart the router and modem.

Contact your internet provider if that connection still fails. If switching connections doesn't get the picture loading, check Snapchat's Data Saver next.

When Data Saver makes pictures wait

Snapchat's Data Saver stops Snaps and Stories from loading automatically over mobile data.

Tap the unloaded picture. With this setting enabled, tapping to load is expected behavior.

To restore automatic loading, open your Profile.

Tap the gear icon.

Follow App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data > Manage My Data > Data Saver.

Switch Data Saver off on iPhone, or uncheck it on Android. Snapchat also calls this setting Travel Mode.

Update Snapchat on both phones

Don't stop at your own phone. Snapchat recommends updating both participants' apps when Snaps won't send or load.

On iPhone, find the Snapchat update under App Store > profile icon > App Updates. Install the available update.

On Android, find Snapchat under Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Updates available. Install its available update.

Ask the sender to update Snapchat on their device too.

If the app stays stuck, reopen it

Use this when pictures still won't open after connection checks and updates. Closing and reopening Snapchat is one of its recommended troubleshooting steps.

On iPhone, open the App Switcher.

Find Snapchat and swipe its preview upward.

On Pixel, force-stop the app through Settings > Apps > See all apps > Snapchat > Force stop > OK. Other Android manufacturers use different labels.

Launch Snapchat again.

Retry the picture.

If it still won't load, fully shut down your phone.

Leave it off for one minute, as Snapchat recommends for loading failures.

Turn the phone back on.

Retry the picture in Snapchat.

Pictures load on Wi-Fi but not mobile data

Disabled cellular access prevents Snapchat from using mobile data on iPhone.

Open Settings > Cellular.

Enable Cellular Data.

Tap Show All if you need to expand the app list.

Enable Snapchat in that list.

For background-loading problems on Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data.

Enable Snapchat. Android's system Data Saver restricts background data; foreground apps already have mobile-data access. This change addresses background loading, so skip it when the picture only fails while Snapchat is open.

Clear the cache without deleting your Snaps

Clear Snapchat's cache when pictures still fail after the simpler fixes. Snapchat says this preserves your Memories, Snaps, and Chats.

Inside Snapchat, open My Account.

Tap the gear icon.

Follow App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data.

On iPhone, under Manage My Data, tap Clear Cache > Clear.

On Android, under Manage My Data, choose Clear Data > Clear Cache > Clear. Here, Clear Data opens Snapchat's internal controls. Android's separate Clear storage command erases local app data.

If your Snapchat menus differ, Snapchat also documents interfaces with Clear Cache directly in Settings or under Clear Data, and confirmations labeled Clear All or Continue. Follow the cache control that matches your screen.

On Pixel, an alternative is Settings > Apps > See all apps > Snapchat > Storage & cache > Clear cache.

Retry the picture after clearing the cache.

An expired picture cannot be restored by resetting the app

If only one older picture refuses to open, check whether it was already viewed, deleted, or expired before reinstalling anything. Snapchat automatically deletes unopened Snaps after 31 days. Deletion after viewing depends on the conversation's retention settings.

No app reset restores a Snap that Snapchat has deleted from its servers. Ask the sender for a fresh copy if they still have the picture.

Reinstall only after backing up Memories

If available pictures still won't load, back up your Memories before reinstalling Snapchat.

  1. 1.Open Snapchat's My Account > gear icon. Under Apps & Privacy, select My App, then open Memories under Customize My App.
  2. 2.Confirm Backup Progress reads Complete. If it doesn't, restore connectivity and wait for the backup to finish. Unbacked-up Memories cannot be recovered, and reinstalling carries a risk of local data loss.
  3. 3.On iPhone, touch and hold Snapchat, then select Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Removing only its Home Screen icon does not uninstall it.
  4. 4.On Android, uninstall through Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage > Snapchat > Uninstall.
  5. 5.Reinstall Snapchat through the App Store or Google Play Store. Sign in, then retry the picture.
  6. 6.If loading still fails, open My Account > gear icon > App & Privacy > Support & Safety > Bugs and Suggestions > Report a Bug. Follow the prompts and describe which pictures, networks, and devices are affected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I remove and re-add a friend when their pictures won't load?

No. Snapchat does not recommend removing a friend or clearing a conversation as a picture-loading repair. Removing a friend changes friendship and private-content access; clearing a conversation removes it from the feed without deleting saved or sent content.

Do I need to give Snapchat access to all my photos to receive pictures?

No. Photos permission concerns Camera Roll access and sharing, while Camera permission concerns taking Snaps. Neither is a general repair for incoming pictures that won't load.

Can I download backed-up Memories if they won't load in the app?

Yes. At accounts.snapchat.com, open My Data. Enable Export your Memories under Select data to include, then select Request Only Memories. Choose dates, confirm your notification email, and select Submit. When the export is ready, open See exports > Download. Extract the ZIP, open index.html, and select Memories to download available pictures. This does not restore deleted, expired, or never-backed-up pictures.

Should I disconnect my VPN?

Disconnect it using its controls and retry signing in if Snapchat specifically reports that your network is blocked. Another Wi-Fi connection or mobile data is also an option. This addresses Snapchat's blocked-network login condition; it isn't a general fix for every picture-loading failure.
