NVIDIA App’s “Unable to retrieve settings” error leaves you stuck when you want to optimize a game. The message alone doesn’t mean your graphics driver is broken. Start with the app update, then check profile downloads and the affected game’s setup.
Start with the latest NVIDIA App
Open Settings > About in NVIDIA App to check your version. NVIDIA corrected a misleading settings-retrieval error in version 11.0.3.232 and fixed optimization failing after a PC restart in 11.0.5.266. Install the current release to get those fixes.
Select Download Now on NVIDIA’s official app page. Third-party utilities can block automatic updates, so use the current installer even if the app hasn’t offered an update.
Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
Complete the installation. Administrator access here applies to the installer; NVIDIA does not identify running the installed app as administrator as a settings-retrieval repair.
Reopen Settings > About to confirm the version changed.
If the error remains, give the app time to finish downloading its game profiles next.
Give new profile downloads a few minutes
This addresses settings and screenshots that haven’t finished downloading after the app’s first launch.
Leave NVIDIA App open and connected to the internet for several minutes.
Open Graphics.
Select the affected game.
Click Optimize.
If you suspect server maintenance, check the GeForce Forums or NVIDIA’s Facebook updates using the links on NVIDIA’s profile-download help page.
If NVIDIA reports maintenance, retry Optimize after service resumes.
Check the game that refuses to optimize
Check support, configuration files, and patch level before moving on to app reinstallation.
- 1.Check NVIDIA’s supported-games list for optimal-settings support for the exact title or edition. The list is linked from NVIDIA’s game-detection help page. Support for filters or DLSS overrides does not establish optimization support.
- 2.Launch the game once and let it initialize its configuration files. NVIDIA App needs those files to optimize a newly installed game.
- 3.Exit the game after its initial setup.
- 4.Install the latest official game patch through its launcher or publisher’s updater. Update controls vary by game and storefront. NVIDIA designs optimal settings for the latest official game version.
- 5.Return to Graphics in NVIDIA App, select the game, and click Optimize.
Include the game’s installation folder
Open Settings > Scan Locations when a supported game is missing from NVIDIA App.
Check the listed folders for the game’s installation directory, especially if you installed it on another drive.
Add the game’s installation directory if it is missing.
Return to Graphics.
Select the detected game.
Click Optimize.
Tip: The three-dot menu beside the sorting and filtering controls in Graphics also lets you add programs or scan directories, but adding an executable does not create an optimal-settings profile.
Reinstall the app if the checks haven’t helped
If updating NVIDIA App and correcting the game setup haven’t helped, try NVIDIA’s app replacement procedure. Reinstallation is a troubleshooting step, with no guarantee that it resolves this specific error.
On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Open the three-dot menu beside NVIDIA App.
Select Uninstall.
Restart your PC after removal.
Select Download Now on NVIDIA’s official app page.
Run the downloaded installer to reinstall the app.
Reopen NVIDIA App.
Leave it connected to the internet for several minutes so its profiles can download.
Open Graphics.
Select the affected game.
Click Optimize.
If third-party antivirus background scanning blocks the official installer, temporarily disable that scanning using your antivirus controls, as NVIDIA advises for installation failures.
Retry the installation.
Restore antivirus scanning afterward.
On a work-managed PC, contact your administrator if installation remains blocked.
Report an error that keeps returning
If a supported, updated game still won’t optimize after its first launch, report the failure to NVIDIA. Report unusually long profile-download delays here, too.
Click the upper-right exclamation-point Send Feedback control.
Include the affected game, your app and driver versions, and whether the error affects one game or your entire library.
If feedback won’t submit or the problem persists, open NVIDIA’s Consumer Support page and choose Chat now or Open a new ticket.
Adjust driver settings while optimization is unavailable
Driver controls remain separate from game-profile optimization. NVIDIA added offline access to driver settings in app version 11.0.5.
Open Graphics, select a program, and scroll to Driver Settings to access its controls. The available options depend on your GPU, driver, and game.
Use Global Settings for system-wide defaults. These controls let you adjust driver settings while you troubleshoot; they do not repair profile retrieval.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to sign in to NVIDIA App to optimize games?
No. NVIDIA account login is optional and supports features such as rewards and bundles. Signing out and back in is not a required optimization step.
Will deleting the shader cache fix this error?
NVIDIA’s shader-cache troubleshooting addresses crashes, poor performance, and visual artifacts. NVIDIA does not identify shader-cache deletion as a repair for the settings-retrieval error.
Should I switch back to GeForce Experience?
No. GeForce Experience is no longer supported. Stay with the current NVIDIA App.
Does the Performance–Quality slider fix failed optimization?
The slider changes the balance between performance and image quality requested for optimization. It is not an error-repair control.
