Reddit videos can play normally while the audio stays muted, blocked, or sent to the wrong device. Start with the Reddit player, then check the app, phone, browser, and computer controls that decide where sound plays.

Unmute the Reddit video player first

Use this when one Reddit video is moving but silent. On reddit.com, open the video post and click inside the media player so the controls are active.

Click the speaker or audio control in the video player.

Press M to switch between Mute and Unmute.

Press Up Arrow to raise the player volume.

On Android, unmute any Reddit video shown in your feed. Reddit’s Android app remembers the last in-feed mute setting, so unmuting one in-feed video stops later in-feed videos from starting muted by default.

Turn off mute by default on iPhone

The Reddit app for iOS has its own setting for videos that start muted. Open Reddit, tap your avatar icon, then tap the hamburger menu.

Go to Settings, move to Advanced, and turn Mute videos by default off.

Return to the feed and open the video again.

If Reddit is still silent after that, check whether your phone is muted or sending audio to another output.

Make video previews actually play

Autoplay controls decide whether Reddit video previews play in the feed or stay stopped until you open them.

In the Reddit app, tap your avatar icon, open the hamburger menu, then go to Settings. Under Accessibility, tap Media and animations.

Open Autoplay video previews and choose Always or Only on Wi-Fi instead of Never.

On reddit.com, click your avatar in the top-right corner, open Settings, select the Preferences tab, and turn Autoplay Media on.

Raise your phone volume and choose the right output

Press the volume buttons on your iPhone or iPad while Reddit audio should be playing.

Turn off Silent mode.

On models with a Ring/Silent switch, move the switch forward so orange is not showing.

On Action button models, press the Action button when it is assigned to Silent mode.

Open Settings, tap Focus, tap Do Not Disturb, and make sure Do Not Disturb is off.

When audio is going to AirPlay or Bluetooth, open Control Center while audio is playing, tap AirPlay in the media controls, then choose the speaker, TV, or device you want.

On Android, press a volume button, tap Menu, and raise Media volume.

If Bluetooth is connected on Android, tap Play media to under Media volume and choose the correct output.

On Motorola devices with Multi-volume, open Settings, Sound & vibration, Multi-volume, then Auto mute, and unmute Reddit or turn Auto mute off.

Disconnect Bluetooth once as a final check when Reddit looks fine but the sound is coming from somewhere else.

Fix Reddit sound in Chrome or Firefox

This fixes Reddit when other apps have sound, but Reddit is muted or blocked in your desktop browser.

In Chrome, open More, then Settings.

Go to Privacy and security, then Site settings.

Under Content, open Additional content settings, then Sound.

Select the option that allows sites to play sound.

For Reddit only, open reddit.com, select View site information to the left of the address, open Site settings, and change the sound permission.

In Firefox, click the speaker button on the Reddit tab to unmute it.

Press Ctrl + M on Windows or control + M on Mac while the Firefox tab is active.

Press Ctrl + ↑ on Windows or command + ↑ on Mac to unmute media audio, then press ↑ to raise volume.

Do not rely on chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting to bring Reddit sound back. Current Chrome desktop builds still list that flag, but it is an experimental toggle that ships turned off by default and only adds tab-strip controls for muting tab audio, and Google’s Chrome help pages do not document it as a sound fix. Use Chrome’s current site sound settings or media controls instead.

Check Safari tab sound and autoplay

A muted Safari tab is the quickest Safari-specific cause.

On Mac, open the Reddit tab and click the Audio button in the search field to unmute the page.

To let Reddit autoplay with sound on Mac, open reddit.com in Safari, click the Page menu button in the Smart Search field, open Website Settings, then set Auto-Play to Allow All Auto-Play.

For the global Safari setting, open Safari, then Settings, then Websites, then Auto-Play. Set reddit.com or When visiting other websites to the autoplay behavior you want.

On iPad, tap the Mute button in the search field or on the right side of the tab in the tab bar.

To find which iPad tab is making the sound, touch and hold the Mute button in the search field to see the list of websites that are playing audio, then choose a website to go to the tab where the audio is playing.

Reset computer audio for Reddit

Run these desktop checks when Reddit stays silent after the player and browser controls are unmuted.

  1. 1.On Windows 11, open Start, then Settings, System, Sound, and Volume mixer.
  2. 2.Under Apps, make sure your browser or Reddit app is not muted and its volume slider is turned up.
  3. 3.Confirm the correct Output device is selected for that browser or app.
  4. 4.When all browser or app sound is affected, open Start, type services.msc, press Enter, then restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  5. 5.On Mac, open the Apple menu, then System Settings or System Preferences, Sound, and Output; choose the intended speakers, raise Output volume, and make sure Mute is not selected.
Select Start to open the Windows Start menu.
Select Start to open the Windows Start menu.

Install or update the official Reddit app

A stale or unofficial app can leave you chasing settings that do not match Reddit’s current controls. Use Reddit’s official mobile app download page and choose iOS - App Store or Android - Google Play.

Install the official app or update the one already on your phone or tablet.

Reopen Reddit, play a video, and check the player speaker control again.

If updating does not bring the sound back, the post itself may not contain an audio track or the current app may not expose sound for that hosted video.

Check work and school restrictions

The most common cause on managed devices is an admin policy that blocks audio or autoplay.

On managed Edge, an organization can allow media autoplay for websites or for specific sites, including Reddit URL patterns.

On managed ChromeOS devices, an administrator can enable or disable audio output across built-in speakers, headphone jacks, HDMI, and USB audio outputs.

Consumer-owned unmanaged Chromebooks use the normal volume and output controls instead.

When Reddit has no sound only on a work, school, or managed Chromebook, contact the device administrator and ask whether Reddit audio output or media autoplay is restricted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Reddit videos start muted on Android?

Reddit’s Android app uses the last in-feed mute setting. Unmute one in-feed video, and later in-feed videos should stop starting muted by default.

Why is there still no sound after I unmute Reddit?

Your device may be muted, the browser tab may be muted, audio may be routed to Bluetooth or AirPlay, or the Reddit post may not contain an audio track.

Can Reddit force every video to start with sound on the web?

Reddit does not publish a current account-level web setting that forces all Reddit videos to start with sound. Use the player control and turn on Autoplay Media instead.

Does Do Not Disturb mute Reddit videos?

On iPhone and iPad, check Focus settings when sound is not working. Open Settings, Focus, Do Not Disturb, and make sure it is off.
