Your TV has sound, but the screen is black, blank, or so dim it looks off. The fix starts with the TV menu test, then moves through power, input, HDMI, screen-off modes, picture settings, streaming devices, software updates, and resets.

Use the steps that match your TV brand or connected device.

1. Check whether the TV screen itself works

Press Volume on the TV remote.

Look for the volume indicator on the screen.

If the volume indicator appears, the TV panel is displaying menus, so troubleshoot the input, HDMI cable, external device, or app.

If nothing appears, finish the power reset below, then contact the TV manufacturer for service.

2. Restart the TV and every connected device

Turn the TV off.

Unplug the TV power cord from the wall.

Wait two minutes for a Sony TV, or at least 5 seconds for a VIZIO TV.

Plug the TV back in and turn it on.

Restart the connected device, including a cable box, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Chromecast, console, or disc player.

For a built-in streaming app with sound and a black screen, unplug the TV and router, plug them back in, and check the TV network connection.

Tip: built-in app problems point to the TV and router; HDMI problems point to the source device, cable, or port.

3. Put the TV on the right input

Turn on the external device connected to the TV.

Next, press Input, Source, Video, or Home on the TV remote.

Select the HDMI input that matches the port in use, such as HDMI 1 for a cable box plugged into HDMI 1.

If the TV cycles through inputs, pause 10 seconds on each one so the TV can detect video.

4. Reseat the HDMI cable and test another port

This fixes a bad HDMI connection, failed port, weak cable, or receiver/switch problem.

Turn off the TV and the connected device.

Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends.

Firmly reconnect the cable to the TV HDMI Input and the device HDMI Output.

Turn both devices back on.

After that, try a different HDMI port on the TV, starting with HDMI 1 or Input 1.

Try another working HDMI cable.

Connect the device directly to the TV if it runs through an A/V receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or repeater.

5. Wake the screen from screen off mode

Some TVs turn the display off while audio keeps playing.

On Samsung TVs, press any remote button except Volume or Power, then check Home → Menu → Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → Accessibility → Picture Off; older Samsung sets list it under Settings → General → Accessibility.

On Roku TVs, press OK, or use a Roku voice remote and say Turn on display.

On supported LG TVs from 2022 onward, press the power button on the Magic Remote, then turn off All Settings → General → Always Ready → Enable the Function.

6. Fix a picture that looks too dim

This fixes video that is present but almost black because Energy Saving or Eco picture mode is active.

On recent LG webOS TVs, press Settings → All Settings → General → OLED Care → Device Self Care → Energy Saving Steps → Maximum → Off.

On LG webOS 5.0, open All Settings → Picture → Energy Saving → Maximum → Off.

If Auto Energy Saving is active, go to All Settings → Picture → Energy Saving → Auto → Off.

If the TV is in Eco picture mode, press Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Mode Settings → Picture Mode → Eco → Standard Picture.

On a Fire TV Smart TV, press and hold Home or Settings until Quick Settings appears, then select Picture and adjust the available picture settings.

7. Run the built in picture or HDMI test

Samsung TVs include diagnostics that separate a TV picture fault from an HDMI fault.

For newer Samsung models, use All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test → OK.

For HDMI problems, use Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Signal Information → HDMI Cable Test → Start Test, or on 2022 and later models use All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → HDMI Troubleshooting.

Follow the on-screen result and replace the cable or arrange service when the test directs it.

8. Use the matching streaming device fix

For Roku players, press a button on the Roku remote to wake it, connect it directly to the TV, make the HDMI connection firm, try a different cable, use the Roku-supplied power adapter, and plug it into a wall outlet when a low-power warning or flashing red light appears.

For Apple TV, unplug both ends of the HDMI cable, reconnect them firmly, select the matching TV input, try another HDMI port, bypass an HDMI switch or A/V receiver, then unplug Apple TV power for 30 seconds.

For Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD with a blank screen, hold Menu and Volume Down for 5 seconds to cycle video resolutions, then choose a working one.

For Apple TV 4K, open Settings → Video and Audio → Check HDMI Connection.

For Fire TV, open Settings → Display & Sounds; for a blank screen caused by resolution, hold Up and Rewind for about 5 seconds, then choose a working resolution.

For Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer, use the included power cord and adapter, set the TV to the correct HDMI input, unplug device power for one minute, try another HDMI input, update the affected app, and keep the Google device and TV firmware current.

For Chromecast or Google TV Streamer HDR trouble, go to All settings at the top right of the TV screen, then Display & Sound → Advanced display settings → Format selection → Manual, then turn off the available HDR format options.

If 4K output is unstable on a Google streaming device, lower the resolution from Automatic or 4K to 1080p.

9. Update software or reset last

This fixes software and setup problems after the power, input, HDMI, screen-off, dim-picture, and streaming-device checks are complete.

On a 2022 or later Samsung TV, open All Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now; on previous models, open Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. Then hold Power on the remote until the TV turns off and back on after the update.

For a Samsung USB update, use Samsung's download page on a PC, find the TV model, download and extract the firmware to a USB drive with no other files or folders, connect it to the TV, then run All Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now.

For VIZIO, use the firmware search page and enter the serial number from the sticker on the back of the TV to check current firmware information.

On Roku TV, reset from Home → Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Factory reset → Factory reset everything.

When a Roku TV menu is unusable, hold the supported physical reset button or button combination for 12 seconds on Pro Series, Plus Series, or Select Series models.

Use Roku TV Recovery Mode only after other reset methods fail, since Roku describes it as the most invasive reset method.

For Fire TV devices and Fire TV Smart TVs, hold Back and the right side of the navigation circle together for 10 seconds, then confirm or cancel the factory reset on screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my TV have sound but no picture?

The usual causes are the wrong input, a loose or failing HDMI cable, a connected device that needs a restart, a screen-off mode, or picture settings that make the display extremely dim.

How do I know whether the TV panel is bad?

Press Volume on the TV remote. If the volume indicator appears, the panel can display menus, so troubleshoot the source, cable, app, or device. If no TV menu or indicator appears after a power reset, contact the TV manufacturer for service.

Can an HDMI cable cause sound but no picture?

Yes. LG, Samsung, Sony, Roku, Apple, and Google troubleshooting all include reseating HDMI connections, trying another HDMI port, and replacing the cable when the picture does not return or keeps dropping.

Should I factory reset my TV first?

No. Factory reset belongs at the end, after power, input, HDMI, screen-off modes, picture settings, streaming-device settings, and software updates.
