A picture won't open in Messenger, or older photos have disappeared from a conversation after changing phones. Start with connection checks, reopening the app, and updates, then turn to encrypted-history restoration for missing older pictures. Before deleting Messenger or clearing its data, make sure you can sign in and restore your encrypted chat history.

Check whether your connection is the problem

These checks address pictures that fail on one connection.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi and select a working network.

Make sure Settings > Airplane Mode is off.

If pictures load only on Wi-Fi, open Settings > Cellular and turn on Cellular Data. On cellular iPads that use the label Cellular Data, open that category instead.

Find Messenger in the cellular app list and enable its switch.

On a Google Pixel with an active mobile-data plan, open Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs and enable Mobile data. These Android paths are for Pixel; other manufacturers use different labels.

On that screen, tap your carrier's name, then turn on Use SIM.

Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Internet and turn Wi-Fi off to test cellular data independently.

Retry the same picture in Messenger after changing connections.

For a failure confined to your home Wi-Fi, unplug the router and modem.

Reconnect them and allow the connection to return.

Retry the picture in Messenger.

For an early comparison before changing app data, sign in to Facebook on a computer.

Open Facebook messaging.

Open the affected conversation to compare the same picture with your phone. If prompted, complete the encrypted-history restoration described below before comparing older pictures.

Give Messenger a fresh start and update it

Follow the steps for your device, testing the picture after reopening and again after updating.

  1. 1.On Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Messenger > Force stop > OK, then reopen Messenger.
  2. 2.On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom and pause. On a Home-button iPhone, double-click the Home button instead. Find Messenger in the app switcher, swipe its preview upward, and reopen the app.
  3. 3.On Android, open Google Play Store and tap your profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Updates available. Install the Messenger update if offered, then reopen the app.
  4. 4.On iPhone or iPad, open App Store and tap your profile icon > App Updates. Install the available Messenger update, then reopen it. On older supported software that lists updates directly on the profile screen, select the update there.

Clear the temporary cache on Android

Try clearing Messenger's temporary cache before deleting its local data. Pay attention to the button: Clear cache and Clear storage do different things.

On Pixel, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Messenger > Storage & cache > Clear cache.

On Samsung Galaxy, use Settings > Apps > Messenger > Storage > Clear cache. The presentation varies by model.

Reopen Messenger.

Test the picture. If clearing the cache doesn't help, check encrypted-history recovery for missing older photos, or device storage for failed downloads.

If older pictures disappeared after changing phones

Use encrypted-history restoration when older pictures are missing after a device change and you have an existing, recoverable secure-storage backup. This restores backed-up history; it does not repair every image-loading failure.

At Messenger's secure-storage restoration prompt, tap Restore now and use your existing six-digit PIN, or the key you previously saved in Google Drive or iCloud Drive.

Set up a PIN if Messenger offers one: Meta says that after December 2026, a key saved in Google Drive or iCloud Drive will no longer restore chat history on a new device.

Keep secure storage intact. Without it, you risk permanently losing messages and media. Do not delete secure storage or disable encryption to troubleshoot pictures.

If you cannot restore the history, hold off on clearing app data or reinstalling.

Ask the sender to resend the picture if they still have the original.

Make room when your phone is nearly full

Freeing storage addresses downloads blocked by a lack of space.

On Pixel, open Settings > Storage > Free up space.

Review a category for files you no longer need.

Tap Select files.

Select only the files you intend to remove.

Tap Move files to Trash.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.

Review the storage recommendations.

Remove unneeded content. Offloading an app preserves its documents and data, so it does not clear Messenger's cache.

Try loading the picture again in Messenger.

Reinstall only after confirming chat recovery

Save reinstalling for a phone-app failure that persists after connection checks, updates, and the applicable cache or storage steps. First confirm that you can sign in and have your encrypted-history recovery method ready. Messages and media without secure-storage protection risk permanent loss.

On Android, open Google Play Store and tap your profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage > Messenger > Uninstall.

Reinstall Messenger from Meta Platforms, Inc.'s Google Play listing.

On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold Messenger.

Choose Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Removing only its Home Screen icon does not uninstall the app.

Download Messenger again from Meta Platforms, Inc.'s App Store listing.

Sign in to the reinstalled app.

Restore your backed-up history when prompted.

If pictures still won't load, compare the affected conversation with Facebook messaging on a computer. For pictures that also fail in Chrome, try the browser checks next.

A browser comparison and fixes for Chrome

Sign in to Facebook on a computer and open Facebook messaging. Open the affected conversation and compare the same picture with your phone. Restore encrypted history if prompted before comparing older pictures.

In desktop Chrome, reload without cached content using Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+R on Mac. If Facebook's images are blocked, open View site information beside the address > Site settings > Images and allow images. Reload Facebook.

Open More > New Incognito Window and sign in to Facebook messaging, restoring encrypted history if prompted. If pictures work there, test for an extension conflict through More > Extensions > Manage extensions by turning extensions off and reloading Facebook. Re-enable them individually to identify the cause.

A successful private-session test also points to stored site data as a troubleshooting target. If pictures remain unavailable across devices and connections, ask the sender to resend an original they still have. Cache clearing does not ensure recovery of permanently removed or expired media.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I see received pictures but not select photos to send?

Photo-library permissions control which local pictures Messenger can access for uploading. On Android, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Messenger > Permissions > Photos and videos and grant access to the pictures you want to share. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos > Messenger and adjust access to include those pictures. These permissions concern uploads, not ordinary received-photo downloads.

Does Data Saver stop Messenger pictures from loading?

Pixel's Data Saver principally restricts background mobile data; active apps normally retain mobile-data access. To exempt Messenger from background restrictions, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data and enable Messenger.

Should I turn off Low Power Mode on my iPhone?

Use this check when the problem concerns background loading. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode and turn off Low Power Mode. On iPhone 14 and earlier, use Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. This tests a background-activity restriction; it does not establish the cause of a picture failing in an open conversation.

What if my iPhone won't let me delete Messenger?

If parental controls hide Delete App, ask the parent to check whether Deleting Apps is allowed. On a device managed by a school or workplace, ask the administrator to permit removal and reinstallation.
