Live Translation on AirPods breaks when one required piece is missing: supported AirPods, a compatible iPhone, Apple Intelligence, the Translate app, downloaded languages, or current firmware.
Start with the checks below before resetting anything. The fastest fixes are usually Apple Intelligence, language downloads, and firmware.
Check the Requirements First
Live Translation with AirPods works on AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2. It requires iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on, Apple’s Translate app downloaded, and the latest AirPods firmware.
If your AirPods or iPhone are not on that list, Live Translation is unavailable on that setup.
Check iOS from Settings then General then Software Update. If an update appears, tap Download and Install.
Turn On Apple Intelligence
The most common cause is Apple Intelligence being off or still downloading its on-device models.
Open Settings, go to Apple Intelligence & Siri, and turn on Apple Intelligence. Keep your iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power until the download finishes.
Your device language and Siri language must match a supported Apple Intelligence language. Open Settings, then General, then Language & Region, and check Preferred Languages and Region.
Next, open Settings, then Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap Language. Choose the same supported language and wait for the Siri language download to finish.
Install Translate and Download Languages
Live Translation with AirPods needs Apple’s Translate app. Open the App Store, search for Translate by Apple, and tap Get or the redownload button.
Put your AirPods in your ears and connect them to your iPhone. Open Settings, tap the name of your AirPods, then under Translation, tap Languages and download both languages for the conversation.
If Live Translation still does not start after both languages finish downloading, delete and redownload the stuck language pack next.
Redownload a Stuck Language Pack
Use this when a language shows as downloaded but Live Translation still refuses to start.
- 1.Wear your AirPods and connect them to your iPhone.
- 2.Open Settings and tap the name of your AirPods.
- 3.Under Translation, tap Languages.
- 4.Swipe left on the downloaded language and tap Delete.
- 5.Tap the language again to download it fresh.
Start Live Translation the Supported Way
This fixes a correct setup that is being launched from the wrong place.
Open the Translate app.
Tap the Live tab.
Choose Their Language and Your Language.
Tap Start Translation.
On AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3, press and hold the stem on both AirPods at the same time.
On AirPods Max 2, press and hold the listening mode button.
To start with Siri, say Siri, start Live Translation.
Add Faster Launch Shortcuts
Set up these shortcuts after the Translate app works normally.
- 1.Swipe down from the top-right corner of iPhone to open Control Center, then tap Translate.
- 2.If Translate is missing, open Control Center and tap the Add button at the top left.
- 3.Tap Add a Control, choose Translate, then close Control Center by swiping up from the bottom center.
- 4.On iPhone models with an Action button, open Settings, then Action Button, and swipe to Translate.
- 5.Wear your AirPods, then press and hold the Action button to start Live Translation.
Update iOS and AirPods Firmware
Live Translation with AirPods requires iOS 26 or later and the latest AirPods firmware. To update iPhone, back it up, plug it into power, connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings, then General, then Software Update, and tap Download and Install if it appears.
To update AirPods or AirPods Pro firmware, update your iPhone, iPad, or Mac first and turn on Bluetooth. Connect the AirPods, connect the Apple device to Wi-Fi, plug the charging case into power, put the AirPods in the case, close the lid, keep the case nearby, wait at least 30 minutes, then open the lid to reconnect.
For AirPods Max firmware, connect them by Bluetooth, connect your Apple device to Wi-Fi, plug the charging cable into the bottom-right earphone, and keep them in Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes.
Check the firmware version from Settings, then Bluetooth, then the Info button next to your AirPods, then About. If the firmware version did not change, repeat the charging and nearby-device step. If it still will not update, reset your AirPods or AirPods Max, then try the firmware update again.
Fix Microphone and Conversation Problems
The most common cause during a live conversation is poor audio pickup in a noisy place.
Start Live Translation, then move your iPhone closer to the person speaking. The iPhone microphones work with AirPods to improve translation performance in noisy environments.
Check microphone access from Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone. Turn on access for Translate if it appears there.
If the other person needs to read or hear your translated reply, open the Translate app and use the Live tab transcript. Tap the Play button to play the translation on the iPhone speaker.
Reconnect or Reset Your AirPods
Connection problems make Live Translation disappear or fail even when the iPhone settings are correct.
Reconnect normally first. Go to the Home Screen, put your AirPods in the charging case, open the case near your iPhone, tap Connect, follow the on-screen instructions, then tap Done.
If the setup animation does not appear, open the case lid and pair manually from Settings then Bluetooth. For AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods 4, double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white; for other models, press and hold the setup button until the light flashes white, then select the AirPods in Bluetooth.
If pairing is still broken, open Settings, then Bluetooth, then the AirPods More Info screen, and choose Forget This Device. Reconnect the AirPods after that.
For AirPods Max, charge them to at least 50 percent, then press and hold the listening mode button and Digital Crown until the LED flashes amber to restart them. To factory reset AirPods Max, press and hold the listening mode button and Digital Crown for 15 seconds until the LED flashes amber, then white, then reconnect.
Check Region and Managed Device Limits
Live Translation with AirPods is not available in China mainland, and Apple Intelligence itself will not work if you are in China mainland and your Apple Account Country or Region is also in China mainland. The EU is a different case: the feature was withheld from EU users at launch while Apple did the engineering work for the Digital Markets Act, and Apple then expanded Live Translation on AirPods to the EU in iOS 26.2, so an EU iPhone on current software is supported. If you were blocked by the old EU rule, update iOS before troubleshooting anything else. There is no Apple-supported consumer toggle that overrides a region rule that still applies.
Language availability matters too. Apple lists Live Translation with AirPods languages under Apple Intelligence feature availability, including English (United States), English (United Kingdom), French (France), German (Germany), Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain), and Chinese Mandarin options with regional limits.
On a school or work iPhone, a management profile can block Apple Intelligence or on-device translation processing. Contact your organization’s device administrator and ask them to allow Apple Intelligence and translation processing through declarative management configuration on iOS 26.4 or later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Live Translation not appear for my AirPods?
Your setup is missing one requirement. You need supported AirPods, iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence, Apple’s Translate app, downloaded languages, and current AirPods firmware.
Can I use Live Translation with only one pair of supported AirPods?
Yes. Use the Translate app’s Live tab transcript or the Play button on the iPhone speaker so the other person can read or hear your translated reply.
Does Live Translation work during calls?
Yes. During a Phone or FaceTime call, tap the More button, then Live Translation. AirPods can be used as the audio route with a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
Why is Live Translation unavailable in my country or region?
Apple limits feature availability by region and language. Live Translation with AirPods is not available in China mainland, and Apple Intelligence will not work if you are in China mainland and your Apple Account Country or Region is also in China mainland. The EU restriction that applied at launch was lifted when Apple expanded Live Translation on AirPods to EU users in iOS 26.2, so update to the latest iOS if an EU iPhone is still not offering it.
