Fortnite can go quiet on Xbox in more than one way. You may lose all match audio, hear the game but not teammates, get silence through a headset, or miss only emote music and lobby tracks. The fix depends on which sound path failed, so start with the checks that match your symptom and move to reinstall or console reset only at the end.

1. Check Epic status before changing Xbox settings

Start here when Fortnite voice chat stops suddenly or several players in your party have the same issue. Open Epic Games Server Status and confirm the Fortnite services are operational.

Next, open the Fortnite Community Issues Trello and look for active voice chat or audio incidents. If Epic lists an outage or active incident, stop troubleshooting your Xbox and wait for Epic to resolve it.

Service outages and known Fortnite incidents can make local settings look broken when the problem is on Epic's side.

2. Choose the Fortnite audio output device

Launch Fortnite, open Settings, and select the Audio tab. Open Audio Output Device, then choose the output device you use for your TV, speakers, or headset.

If Fortnite is the only game with missing or random audio, check the in-game output device before changing console-wide audio. When duplicate choices appear and one begins with Default output, Epic says to select the option that does not begin with Default output.

On Xbox, the available choices still depend on the console's system audio routing.

3. Repair Xbox speaker and headset output

When all Fortnite sound is missing, treat the issue as an Xbox output problem. For speaker audio, press the Xbox button, then open Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.

Under Speaker audio, choose the HDMI or audio format that matches your TV, monitor, receiver, or soundbar. For format testing, open Audio setup under Advanced and test the formats your device supports.

For headset sound, stay on Volume & audio output, go to Headset audio, then choose the format you use: Stereo uncompressed, Windows Sonic for Headphones, Dolby Atmos for Headphones, or DTS Headphone:X when available. For wired or compatible Xbox headsets, connect the headset, press the Xbox button, open Audio & music, and adjust Headset volume, Headset chat mixer, and Mic monitoring.

If game audio is too low, move Headset chat mixer toward game audio. Also confirm the headset is fully connected, its physical volume is raised, and its mute switch or mute button is off.

4. Restore Fortnite voice chat controls

Open the menu icon, choose Settings, then select the Audio icon. Turn Voice Chat on, then check Push-to-Talk and mute settings so they are not blocking your microphone.

Set Fortnite voice chat volume to at least 50%, then raise your headset or speaker volume. Use these controls when you can hear Fortnite but cannot hear teammates, or teammates cannot hear you.

After that, select your profile icon and choose the right voice channel. Use Party chat for players in the same party, or Game chat for players in the same island instance where that channel is supported.

Use the voice controls there to mute, unmute, or deafen players.

5. Switch Xbox Party Chat to game chat

Xbox Party Chat can keep you out of Fortnite's in-game voice channel. This is the key fix when your headset works in an Xbox party but Fortnite teammates are silent.

  1. 1.Press the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. 2.Open Parties & chats.
  3. 3.Select your party.
  4. 4.Press the View button.
  5. 5.Choose Switch to game chat.

6. Allow crossplay, communication, and parental permissions

Fortnite voice chat can be blocked by Xbox privacy settings, Fortnite communication settings, Epic parental controls, or Microsoft family settings. On Xbox, press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize > Communication & multiplayer.

Set You can join cross-network play to Allow, then allow voice and text communication outside Xbox with an audience such as Everybody or In-game friends. Inside Fortnite, select your profile icon, open Settings, then go to Communication.

Set Voice chat and Text chat to an audience that allows chat: Everybody, Friends, Team Members, and Connections, or Friends Only. Do not set chat to Off.

For a child account on Xbox, open Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members, then choose the member and adjust Communication & multiplayer. A parent or organizer can also use the Xbox Family Settings app or account.microsoft.com/family to allow communication, multiplayer, and cross-network play.

If Epic parental controls are active, sign in to the Epic Games account, open Parental Controls, enter the six-digit PIN, and set voice chat to Friends Only, Friends and Teammates, or Everybody.

7. Restart Fortnite and install updates

From Fortnite, press the Xbox button, select Home, and highlight Fortnite. Press the Menu button, choose Quit, then reopen Fortnite.

Quit Fortnite fully before restarting the console. That clears the current game session without touching your installation. If sound still fails, restart the console.

Press and hold the Xbox button, choose Restart console, then select Restart. For a full power cycle, turn off the console, unplug the power cable, wait at least 10 seconds, reconnect it, and turn the Xbox back on.

Update Fortnite from My games & apps > See all > Manage > Updates. Then update Xbox system software from Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Console update available.

8. Use network fixes for voice chat failures

Network fixes are for Fortnite voice chat and service connection problems. They do not fix a muted TV, a disconnected headset, or the wrong audio output format.

Clear the alternate MAC address from Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > Alternate MAC address > Clear > Restart. Change DNS from Settings > General > Network Settings > Advanced settings > DNS settings > Manual.

Set Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and Secondary DNS to 8.8.4.4. Enable UPnP on your router, save the change, then on Xbox open the Settings app, go to the Network tab, and run Test NAT type.

Epic says Fortnite voice chat uses XMPP and requires ports 5222 and 433 open. If your router does not support UPnP, use port forwarding according to your router's instructions.

9. Reinstall Fortnite or reset Xbox last

Reinstall Fortnite after the audio device, Xbox output, voice chat, privacy, update, restart, and network checks fail. Go to Home > My Games & Apps > Games, highlight Fortnite, press the Menu button, then choose Uninstall.

Reinstall Fortnite from the official Xbox or Microsoft Store Fortnite page, or from your library. On Xbox Series X|S, clear the Fortnite console cache this way: turn off the console, unplug it, unplug all accessories, leave the console unplugged for two minutes, press and hold the power button while it is unplugged, reconnect the power cord, turn on Xbox, then start Fortnite.

Xbox One users should use Microsoft's power-cycle steps unless support gives model-specific cache instructions. Use Reset and keep my games & apps only after the Fortnite reinstall also fails.

Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info > Reset console > Reset and keep my games & apps. Handle narrow audio cases separately.

For missing emote or licensed music audio, open Fortnite, select Battle Royale, choose your display name icon, open Settings, go to Audio > Creator options > Licensed Audio, then choose Play. For lobby music only, open the Locker tab, select Lobby, open Lobby Music, then choose a song or select X to disable lobby music.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I hear Fortnite but not my teammates on Xbox?

Fortnite voice chat is usually blocked by the wrong channel, Xbox Party Chat, muted voice controls, low voice chat volume, or communication permissions. Use Fortnite Game chat, switch out of Xbox Party Chat, set voice chat volume to at least 50%, and allow cross-network communication.

Why does Fortnite sound work on my TV but not my headset?

The headset path has its own controls. Check the headset connection, physical volume, mute switch, Xbox Headset volume, Headset chat mixer, Mic monitoring, and Headset audio format under Volume & audio output.

Should I change DNS to fix Fortnite audio on Xbox?

Use DNS changes only for Fortnite voice chat or connection problems. It will not fix a muted TV, a disconnected headset, the wrong HDMI audio format, or low headset volume.

What fixes missing Fortnite emote music on Xbox?

Set Licensed Audio to Play in Fortnite's Audio settings. If only lobby music is missing, open Locker, choose Lobby, then select a Lobby Music track.
