Facebook Reels won't play, the app freezes, or your usual shortcut has disappeared. The fix depends on which problem you're seeing. Start with the connection check below, then follow the app or browser steps for your device.
Reconnect before changing Facebook settings
This targets connection-related playback failures in the Facebook app and website.
Reconnect your device to its current Wi-Fi network. Retry the reel.
If playback still fails, connect to another network. Test the reel again. Meta recommends reconnecting or switching networks for video and Reels playback problems.
For a slow home connection, restart your router or modem using the equipment manufacturer's restart instructions. Retry Facebook once the connection returns.
If the app freezes, close it completely
Use this when Facebook stops responding or a reel stays stuck inside the app. Follow the closing procedure for your phone.
On an iPhone without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the app switcher. On an iPhone with a Home button, double-click Home instead. Swipe Facebook's preview upward to close it. Open Facebook again.
On a Pixel using gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom, hold, and release to open recent apps. Swipe up on Facebook's preview to close it. Reopen Facebook. Try playing a reel.
If Facebook remains unresponsive on a Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Facebook. Tap Force stop. Tap OK to confirm.
Launch Facebook again. These settings labels apply to Pixel; other Android manufacturers use different menus.
Install the available Facebook update
On Android, open the Google Play Store. Tap your profile icon. Open Manage apps & devices > Updates available. Install the Facebook update if offered.
On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store. Tap your profile icon. Open App Updates. Install the Facebook update if offered.
Try playing a reel after the update finishes. On older Apple operating systems, the app update screen differs from the current layout.
Clear Facebook's cache on Android
Start with cached files before trying a storage reset that removes local app data.
- 1.Open Settings on your phone.
- 2.On Pixel, go to Apps > See All Apps > Facebook > Storage & cache. On Samsung Galaxy, go to Apps > Facebook > Storage.
- 3.Tap Clear cache.
- 4.Open Facebook and retry the reel.
A missing shortcut needs a different approach
Outdated directions send you looking for the former Videos tab, which Meta renamed in June 2025.
Log into Facebook in a desktop browser. Select Reels in the left menu. Check Feed as another place to watch reels.
Troubleshoot playback in your browser
On a computer, start with a reload, then narrow down the problem with these browser checks.
Reload Facebook. In Chrome, click Reload; in Safari on Mac, choose View > Reload Page.
Try the reel in another up-to-date supported browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. Meta recommends this for playback problems.
If the problem stays with Chrome, open More > New Incognito Window. Sign into Facebook if needed. Test a reel. This checks for extension or stored-data problems; it is a diagnostic step.
If playback works in Incognito, return to a regular Chrome window. Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Disable extensions. Retest playback.
Enable them individually, testing after each one, to find the conflict. Use Remove for the confirmed culprit.
If extensions are not the cause, open More > Delete browsing data. Choose All time. Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
Then select Delete data. Have your login credentials ready because deleting cookies removes stored sign-in data.
If playback still fails, close the browser. Restart your computer. Reopen Facebook. Retry the reel.
Reinstall the app after the simpler fixes
Deleting Facebook can remove data stored within the app, so keep anything you want to preserve before removing it.
Make sure you have your login credentials available. On a Pixel with a removable Facebook installation, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Facebook. Tap Uninstall. Tap OK to confirm.
Open Facebook's Google Play Store listing, published by Meta Platforms, Inc. Select Install.
On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold Facebook. Select Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Redownload Facebook from Meta Platforms, Inc.'s listing in the App Store.
Open the installed Facebook app. Test Reels again.
If parental controls prevent deletion on an iPhone or iPad, ask the parent to set Deleting Apps to Allow; for a managed device, contact its administrator.
When Reels still will not play
Failures across multiple devices and networks fit a service problem, but they don't prove Facebook is down. Repeating local resets won't answer that question.
For persistent Android app failures, open Facebook's Google Play Store listing and select App support. The listed support email is [email protected].
Describe the playback error, your device, and the Facebook app version in your message. There is no guaranteed response or resolution time.
If the app still fails, try Facebook in an up-to-date Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge browser. If you're already using the website, test another supported browser for playback.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Facebook Reels work on Wi-Fi but not on iPhone cellular data?
Facebook cannot connect over cellular when its cellular access is disabled. Open Settings > Cellular. Enable Cellular Data. Enable Facebook in the apps list.
Why do reels play when clicked but not start automatically?
Check the browser's autoplay permission. In Firefox, click the blocked-autoplay icon in Facebook's address bar. Set Autoplay to Allow Audio and Video. In Safari on Mac, open Facebook. Go to the Page menu > Website Settings > Auto-Play. Select Allow All Auto-Play. These settings address blocked autoplay.
Does clearing Facebook's in-app browsing data clear the Reels app cache?
No. Facebook's in-app browsing-data control clears data for websites opened inside Facebook. It is separate from Android's app-cache control and does not clear the native Reels app cache.
Why can other people not see my reels?
Your selected audience determines who can see your reels. To change the default for future reels on desktop, click your profile picture. Open Settings & privacy > Settings. Select Reels under Audience and visibility. Select the current choice beside Who can see your reels?. Choose the intended audience. Select Save. This changes the default for future reels, not the audience of existing reels.
