Your Discord stream starts with a black screen, drops audio, lags badly, or never shows the screen share button at all. The fix depends on whether Discord is blocked by permissions, using the wrong capture path, running on an unsupported client, or struggling with the connection. Start with the quick checks, then jump to the section that matches what you see on screen.
1. Start with Discord status and a clean restart
Use this first when Discord was streaming normally before and suddenly stopped working.
Open Discord Status and check Voice, Gateway, API, and related services for an active incident.
Fully close Discord. On Windows, close it from the system tray or end Discord processes in Task Manager.
Wait 30 seconds, reopen Discord, and try the stream again.
Restart the computer, iPhone, iPad, or Android device when the same stream failure returns.
Update or reinstall Discord from discord.com/download, the App Store, or Google Play.
When multiple people in the same server cannot stream or watch streams at the same time, Discord Status belongs at the top of the list.
2. Check that your device actually supports streaming
Discord’s current minimums are Windows 10+, macOS 12+, supported Linux releases including Ubuntu 20.04+ and Debian 11+, Android 7+, and iOS 16.0+.
For Discord in a browser, use Chrome 86+, Firefox 142+, Opera 72+, Edge 86+, or Safari 15.4+.
Do not use Discord streaming in a mobile browser. Use the Discord mobile app on iPhone, iPad, or Android.
3. Use the correct screen share control
In a server voice channel, the stream starts from the voice panel, not from the message box.
- 1.Join a voice channel where your role has permission to stream.
- 2.Click the screen streaming icon in the voice status panel near the lower-left corner.
- 3.Select an application window or the entire screen.
- 4.Click Go Live.
In a DM or group DM, open the conversation, start a call with the phone or video icon in the top header, then click Share Your Screen. For a game stream, open the game, press the overlay hotkey Shift+`, click Stream, choose the stream settings, and click Go Live.
When the game does not appear, open User Settings > Activity Settings > Registered Games > Add it, add the running game, and try again. If Discord still does not recognize the game as a game source, share the window or screen instead.
4. Restore Mac and server permissions
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
Turn on Discord, or use the add button to add Discord when it is missing.
Restart Discord after changing the permission.
In Discord, join a voice channel where screen share is allowed and click Screen Share.
Choose Share entire screen, share a window, share an app, or Or share a device.
Pick Stream Quality, Resolution, and Frame Rate, click Next, then use the macOS Make Selection prompt to select what to share.
On macOS, Discord needs screen-recording access before it can capture your display. For a missing stream button in a server, ask an admin to enable Video for your role under Server Settings > Roles > Voice Channel Permissions.
For one voice channel, the admin can right-click the channel, open Edit Channel > Permissions, then allow Video for the needed role or member.
5. Fix lag, reconnecting, and low frame rate
Connection trouble shows up as reconnecting, packet loss, streams that refuse to start, and video that drops frames.
Test the internet speed and stability.
Restart the modem, router, and computer.
Switch to wired Ethernet or another network.
Allow Discord through the firewall or antivirus tool.
Disable or change the VPN when it does not support UDP.
On a work or school network, ask the network admin whether Discord is blocked.
If you manage the server or channel, open Voice Channel Settings > Overview > Region Override and temporarily choose a different region.
During a stream, hover the stream or picture-in-picture window, open the three dots menu, choose Stream Quality, then lower Frame Rate and Resolution.
6. Stop black screens on Windows games
Start with permissions, then change the game’s display mode.
Close Discord.
Right-click the Discord icon and choose Run as administrator.
Open the game’s video or display settings.
Change Full Screen to Borderless, borderless fullscreen, or windowed mode.
Press Windows+G to test exclusive fullscreen. If the game minimizes, Discord says it is using full screen exclusive mode.
For poor stream quality or lag, open User Settings > Voice & Video > Video and disable Hardware Acceleration.
For general Discord lag, open User Settings > Advanced and disable Hardware Acceleration there as well.
When black screens, freezes, crashes, low frame rate, or codec errors continue, update Windows plus graphics and audio drivers from Windows Update, Device Manager, or the GPU maker’s driver tool.
7. Bring back missing or choppy stream audio
Discord captures stream audio on Windows desktop, macOS 13+ desktop, Chrome browser, and supported mobile clients, with Android audio sharing requiring Android 10+. Application audio sharing is not supported on Linux or non-Chrome browsers.
Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
Select the correct Input Device and Output Device.
Scroll to Audio Subsystem and choose Legacy or Standard when audio problems continue.
For choppy audio, disable Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority.
When changed capture settings caused the problem, open the Debugging tab and click Reset Voice and Video Settings.
On Android, open Google Play Store, search for Android System WebView, and update it. Discord says WebView version 149 fixed a 2026 Android screen-share audio bug, so use the update instead of old advice to uninstall WebView updates.
8. Make mobile screen share work
On mobile, start from an active voice connection.
Join voice in a DM, group DM, or server voice channel.
In a voice-only call, swipe up from the bottom and tap Screenshare.
In a video call, tap the Screenshare icon in the bottom controls.
Tap Start now when prompted.
To stop, tap Stop Sharing, tap the Screenshare icon again, or tap Stop Streaming from the device notification panel.
When the option is missing in a server, ask an admin to grant your role the Video permission under voice permissions. Discord documents mobile screensharing for Android 5+ and audio sharing for Android 10+, but the app itself now requires Android 7 or newer, so Android 7+ applies in practice.
The Screen Share OS Not Supported 3003 error points users to Android 12+. Discord also says mobile screenshare is unavailable on Xiaomi MIUI devices.
9. Reinstall Discord after the focused fixes fail
Use a clean reinstall for update loops, install corruption, and stream failures that survive the permission, network, audio, and capture fixes.
On Windows, close Discord from the system tray, end every Discord process in Task Manager, press Windows+R, enter %appdata%, delete the Discord folder, press Windows+R again, enter %localappdata%, delete the Discord folder there too, restart Windows, and reinstall Discord from the official download page.
On macOS, quit Discord with Command+Q or Discord > Quit, end remaining Discord processes in Activity Monitor, press Shift+Command+G in Finder, open ~/Library/Application Support, delete the Discord folder, then open /Library/Application Support and delete Discord there when present. Move Discord from Applications to Trash, empty Trash, restart, and reinstall from Discord’s download page.
On iPhone, iPad, and Android, update or reinstall Discord only from the App Store or Google Play. If Android installation fails, open Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Storage, tap Clear Cache, tap Clear Data, confirm with OK, then install Discord again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Discord stream showing a black screen?
Black screens come from missing macOS screen-recording permission, Windows games running in exclusive fullscreen, protected apps, or capture/performance settings. Grant screen-recording access, switch the game to borderless or windowed mode, and disable Discord Hardware Acceleration.
Why does my Discord stream have no sound?
Use Windows desktop, macOS 13+ desktop, Chrome browser, or a supported mobile client for stream audio capture; Android audio sharing requires Android 10+. Linux and non-Chrome browsers do not support application audio sharing in Discord.
Can Discord stream Netflix or Spotify?
Discord lists Netflix and Spotify as streaming apps restricted by app rules, and Discord does not support screensharing those streaming applications.
What does Stream at Maximum Viewers 2010 mean?
The stream has reached its viewer limit. Wait until another viewer leaves, then join the stream again.
