A Discord invite link usually fails because the invite expired, was deleted, ran out of uses, or the code was entered incorrectly. Discord may show an Unknown or Expired Invite message, a server limit error, a ban notice, or a join page that never loads. Start with the link itself, then move through account limits, server settings, device restrictions, and connection fixes.
Get a fresh invite link first
The most common cause is an expired, deleted, exhausted, or unknown invite, and the fix is to ask for a new link.
Ask the server owner, an admin, or another member with invite permission to create a new Discord invite and send it again.
Open the new link directly instead of retrying the old one.
Copy the full URL or final invite code exactly. Discord invite codes are case sensitive, so keep every uppercase letter, lowercase letter, and character unchanged.
Paste the invite inside Discord
Use this when clicking the link from a browser, text message, email, or another app does not open Discord correctly. Pasting the invite inside Discord avoids the handoff problem.
On desktop or web, look at the server list on the left and press the + icon.
Choose Join a Server.
Paste the full invite link.
Select Join Server.
On mobile, tap the green plus sign in the left sidebar.
Choose Join a Server.
Manually enter the invite link or final invite-code string.
Tap Join Server, then accept the invitation.
Check your Discord server limit
Look for a 100 Server Limit error before troubleshooting the link itself.
If you use a base Discord account or Nitro Basic, leave at least one server before accepting another invite.
Those accounts can join up to 100 servers.
If you have Nitro, your current server cap is 200 servers.
Former Nitro users who are over 100 servers after Nitro expires need to leave servers before joining more.
To raise the cap from 100 to 200 on desktop or browser, open the cogwheel User Settings, choose Nitro, then select Subscribe.
On mobile, tap your avatar at the bottom right, tap the cogwheel, choose Get Nitro, then tap Get Nitro.
Keep a little space below your limit so future invites do not fail for the same reason.
Handle bans and paused invites
This fixes invite errors caused by server-level blocking.
If Discord says you are banned from the server, contact the server admins.
Ask an admin to revoke the ban in Server Settings. Discord server bans are IP-address based, so this has to be handled by the server team.
If you manage the server and invites are paused, open Server Settings.
Go to Invites.
Select Enable Invites to turn invites back on.
Pausing and re-enabling invites is desktop-only and requires Manage Server permission.
If invites are not paused but old links keep failing, remove broken invites with the x.
Generate a new invite and send that link instead.
Fix server invite settings
If you can create invites, make a new one with settings that match how people will use it. Open the server or channel invite surface, choose Create Invite, then open Edit Invite Link or Edit invite link.
Change how long the invite link stays valid and how many times it can be used. Set Max number of uses to No limit when the link needs to work for many people, then choose Generate a New Link and copy it.
For quick invites on desktop or web, hover over the right-hand side of the channel and select Create Invite, the label used in Discord's current Invites 101 guide. Discord's older invite guide still describes the same control as the Instant Invite icon next to the channel name, so use whichever label your client shows. You can also right-click a friend's icon, choose Invite to Server, then pick the server from the drop-down menu.
On iOS, press and hold the channel you want to invite someone to, tap Invite, adjust advanced settings when needed, then send or copy the invite.
Repair custom invite link problems
Use this when the broken link is a custom or vanity-style Discord invite. These links depend on server eligibility and channel visibility.
Keep or restore Level 3 Server Boost status if the custom link matters. Level 3 includes Custom Invite Link, and the custom invite is lost after 30 days if the server loses the required boosts.
Make sure at least one text channel has View Channel enabled for the @everyone role.
Select the server name.
Open Server Settings.
Choose Boost Perks.
Scroll to Custom Invite Link.
Enter up to 25 lowercase letters, numbers, or dashes.
Choose Save Changes.
If Discord says the URL is taken or invalid, use different text.
To remove a broken custom invite, open Server Settings.
Choose Boosts Perks.
Open Custom Invite Link.
Choose Remove Custom Invite Link.
Separate age checks from application gates
This fixes invite links that work but do not place you directly into the server.
If the server uses Apply to Join, submit the member application and wait for review.
Admins review applications from the Members page and choose Approve, Reject, or Interview.
If you manage the server and want normal invites again, do this from the desktop app. Discord says the server member applications feature is still rolling out gradually and can only be enabled through the desktop app, so these join settings may not be available on every server yet.
Press the server name in the upper left.
Open Server Settings.
Open Access.
Under How can people join your server?, select Invite Only.
Members with Kick Members permission can create special invite links that bypass applications.
Admins can view those special links in Server Settings, then Invites.
If you are 18 or older and the server is age-restricted, join from Discord desktop, web, or Android.
Age-restricted servers can only be joined on desktop or Android devices.
In regions where age assurance is required, such as the UK, Australia, and Brazil, you also have to complete age assurance before you can view or enter a server the owner marked as age-restricted. That requirement applies to server owners and moderators too.
After joining elsewhere, you can enable iOS viewing on desktop through User Settings, then Content & Social, then Allow access to age-restricted content on iOS.
Explicit pornography-focused servers remain blocked on iOS except for owners and moderators.
Rule out an outage or connection issue
When several invite links fail at once, check the wider connection path before changing account or server settings.
- 1.Open Discord's status page and check whether API, Gateway, and related services are operational.
- 2.Run a speed test to confirm your internet connection is working normally.
- 3.Try a different network, especially when Discord invite pages fail to load.
- 4.Switch to a different DNS server through your operating system or router controls.
- 5.Temporarily disable VPN, proxy, or firewall filtering, or allow Discord, then retry the invite.
Refresh the app or use another supported client
Fully close Discord, including checking Task Manager on Windows when needed.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reopen Discord.
Retry the invite.
On Windows, close Discord and clear %appdata%/discord/Cache.
On Mac, close Discord and clear ~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cache.
Reopen Discord and retry the invite.
On mobile, use device settings to clear Discord app cache or data.
Reopen Discord and sign back in when required.
Android commonly exposes per-app cache and data controls, while iOS usually uses offload, delete, or reinstall instead of a direct cache button.
Update Discord from Settings, then App Settings, then check for updates.
If the app still misbehaves, reinstall it from Discord's download page.
Use Discord in a supported browser by opening Discord and choosing open Discord.
Discord's current minimums are Windows 10 or later, macOS 12 Monterey or later, supported Linux distributions, Android 7 or later with Google Play Services, and iOS 16.0 or later.
If the device is below those requirements, update the OS or use another supported device.
Skip workaround claims that tell you to bypass a server ban with a VPN or alternate account, move phone numbers between accounts, disable 2FA, or use AutoMod to pause invites. Use the admin, account, app, and network paths above instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Discord say an invite is unknown or expired?
The invite may have expired, been deleted, reached its usage limit, or been typed incorrectly. Ask for a fresh link and copy the code exactly, including capitalization.
Can I fix a Discord invite ban myself?
No. Discord says server bans are IP-address based, and server admins must revoke the ban in Server Settings.
Why can I open the invite but not join the server?
You may be at your server limit, the server may require an application, the server may be age-restricted, or invites may be paused by admins.
What should I do if every Discord invite link fails?
Check Discord's status page, test your connection, try another network, then restart or reinstall Discord from the official download page.
