ChatGPT Voice gets stuck connecting, stops hearing you, or leaves you waiting for a reply you can't hear. Start with the quick checks, then jump to the fix that matches your symptoms. These steps cover mobile apps, desktop browsers, and the current desktop Voice experience.
Check the service and restart your voice session
If Voice suddenly stops working or won't connect, start with the service status and session controls. Check these before digging into device settings.
Open OpenAI Status to check ChatGPT → Voice mode and relevant incidents. If an incident affects Voice, wait for the service to recover.
In ChatGPT, select the Voice icon to start a conversation. Allow microphone access when prompted. Unmute the microphone control inside the conversation if it is muted. For a session that has stopped responding, select the exit control.
End any other active voice conversation, including calls in other windows. ChatGPT supports one simultaneous voice conversation. Select the Voice icon again to restart the session.
In the current desktop app, open the chat or task where you want to use Voice. Select Start voice chat or Start new voice chat.
Give ChatGPT permission to hear you
On iPhone, enable ChatGPT under Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
On Android, select Allow only while using the app under Settings → Apps → See all apps → ChatGPT → Permissions → Microphone. These are Google's labels; manufacturer wording varies. On Android 12 or later with microphone privacy controls, swipe down twice to enable Microphone access in Quick Settings.
On Windows 11, open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Enable Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and the applicable app toggle. For a browser or desktop app, also enable Let desktop apps access your microphone.
On Mac, enable ChatGPT or your browser under Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
If you use a browser, unblock its microphone access
In Chrome, open ChatGPT. Select View site information to the left of the address. Open Site settings. Change the Microphone permission to Allow.
To choose a different microphone, open More → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Microphone. Select the intended device from the microphone dropdown.
In Firefox, click the address-bar permissions icon. Select X beside the microphone's Blocked status. Reload ChatGPT. Start Voice to request access again.
Select your microphone in the permission prompt. Click Allow.
For Safari on Mac, open Safari → Settings → Websites → Microphone → ChatGPT. Select Allow. Keep the operating system's microphone permission enabled too; browser permission alone doesn't replace it.
Fix silent replies and the wrong audio device
A muted output or the wrong selected audio device leaves Voice running without audible replies.
On iPhone, press Volume Up while ChatGPT is speaking so the buttons adjust playback volume.
On Android, press a volume button. Open Menu. Raise the relevant volume slider. If multiple Bluetooth outputs are connected, open Media volume → Play media to.
Select the device you want to hear. Android controls vary by manufacturer.
In Windows 11, select Speakers on the taskbar. Open Select a sound output. Choose your speakers or headphones. Open More mixer settings.
Unmute ChatGPT or your browser if its volume is muted. Raise its volume if it is too low.
On Mac, open Apple menu → System Settings → Sound → Output. Select your speakers or headphones. Raise Output volume. Clear Mute if it is selected.
If ChatGPT cannot hear you through an external headset, turn off its physical Mute button or cable mute switch. If only the browser tab is silent, click Firefox's tab speaker button or Safari's muted Audio button to unmute it.
Keep mobile conversations running and reduce interruptions
These settings address calls that stop when you lock your phone, unwanted interruptions, and the wrong speech language.
For calls that stop when locking the screen or switching apps, open ChatGPT's Settings → Voice. Turn on Background conversations.
Move somewhere quieter if background noise is disrupting the conversation. Use headphones to reduce unwanted interruptions.
In Live, ask ChatGPT to wait until you request a response. This does not prevent every reply during a pause.
If speech is being recognized in the wrong language, open Settings → Voice → Language. Select your language.
Test a different connection or browser
For repeated connection or loading failures, retry Voice after each test to narrow down the problem.
- 1.Try an incognito or private browser window with extensions disabled.
- 2.Temporarily disconnect your VPN or proxy.
- 3.Temporarily disable secure DNS or filtering services such as Web Protect.
- 4.Try another network.
- 5.Test ChatGPT in another browser or on another device.
- 6.If Voice worked in the private window, open Chrome's More → Extensions → Manage extensions and turn off suspected extensions individually.
When Voice is unavailable or a limit notice appears
Read the usage-limit notice before resetting anything. Live Chat usage uses a rolling 24-hour window, with an allowance that varies by plan. Wait for your allowance to become available; Plus and Pro no longer automatically fall back to GPT-Live mini after reaching their Voice limit.
If your account offers multiple voice experiences, select Live, Advanced, or Standard under Settings → Voice to try another experience. Availability depends on your account, region, app version, parental controls, and workspace settings.
For a linked teen account, ask the parent to select the teen under Settings → Parental controls → Family members. Have the parent enable Voice Mode. Begin a new conversation after the setting changes.
On a work or school account or device, ask the workspace owner or administrator to review Voice access, microphone restrictions, and network filtering. Ordinary members cannot override workspace restrictions.
If Voice still won't start, try the app repairs below and use text chat in the meantime. When Live is already active but speech input is failing, type instead of speaking.
Refresh or repair a stuck app
A stuck app or webpage interrupts Voice before the conversation gets going.
On desktop web, refresh ChatGPT with Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Command+Shift+R on Mac.
If you use the mobile or desktop app, close ChatGPT. Reopen the app. Start a new chat if the existing conversation is long or stuck.
If the failure persists, sign out of ChatGPT. Sign back in using the account and sign-in method associated with your access.
On iPhone or iPad, open App Store → profile icon → App Updates. Install the available ChatGPT update.
On Android, open Google Play Store → profile icon → Manage apps & devices → Updates available. Update ChatGPT if an update is listed.
For an Android app that remains stuck, open Settings → Apps → See all apps → ChatGPT. Select Force stop. Tap OK. Reopen ChatGPT.
If Android Voice still fails, open Settings → Apps → See all apps → ChatGPT → Storage & cache. Select Clear cache. Manufacturer wording varies.
Save reinstalling for a mobile app that still malfunctions. Reinstalling can erase local app data, and you may need to sign in again.
On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold ChatGPT. Tap Remove App. Tap Delete App. Confirm with Delete.
On Android, open Settings → Apps → See all apps → ChatGPT. Tap Uninstall. Confirm with OK.
Reinstall the official mobile app using the appropriate store link on OpenAI's download page. Sign back into ChatGPT.
Get help for a persistent Voice failure

Add the time it happened, with your time zone. Provide your account plan, device, operating system, browser or app version, and workspace if applicable.
Tip: Include your results from testing another device or network to help Support narrow down the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the microphone icon the same as Voice mode?
No. Dictation records a prompt and returns a transcription that you can review, edit, and send as text. Use the Voice icon for a live voice conversation.
Why can't I share video or my screen in Live?
Live does not support video or screen sharing. Eligible mobile subscribers need to use Advanced for those features.
Can reinstalling ChatGPT Classic on Mac bring back its old Voice feature?
No. The earlier macOS Voice experience retired on January 15, 2026. Use desktop web, mobile, or the newer desktop Voice product with eligible access.
Is there a keyboard shortcut for desktop Voice?
The current desktop app lets you assign one under Settings → Voice → Voice chat hotkey. By default, Control+Shift+V (Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows) starts a voice chat when Voice is available.
