Your Xbox Series X turns on, but the TV says no signal, stays black, or drops video after a mode change. Start with the HDMI checks that rule out the TV, cable, and display setup, then move into Xbox settings, updates, resets, and repair options.
Use these fixes in order so you do not treat a display setting or cable issue like a dead HDMI port.
Check the cable path first
Use this when the console powers on but nothing appears on the TV or monitor. A loose connection, wrong TV input, or cable in the wrong port can look exactly like a broken HDMI connector.
Turn on the TV and the Xbox Series X.
Set the TV to the correct HDMI input for the console.
Push the HDMI cable firmly into the TV and into the Xbox Series X.
On the Xbox Series X, use the HDMI output port marked by a single raised dash. The Series X does not have an HDMI-in port, so a cable box or satellite receiver connects directly to the TV.
Use the 2-meter Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that came with the Xbox Series X. If you need a longer cable, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 features.
Skip older Xbox One HDMI-in or OneGuide fixes. They do not apply to Xbox Series X.
Rule out the TV port and cable
A bad TV HDMI port or cable can make the Xbox look like the problem. Move the same HDMI cable to a different HDMI port on your TV, then select that matching Input with the TV remote.
If the screen is still blank, connect the Xbox Series X with a different HDMI cable. Keep the test direct from the console to the TV or monitor.
Next, connect the console to a different TV. If the Xbox works there, the original TV, TV port, or display setup is the issue.
Remove HDMI pass through gear
The most common cause in more complex setups is an AVR, soundbar, capture card, HDMI switch, or other video device interrupting the HDMI signal between the Xbox and the TV.
Disconnect the pass-through device.
Plug the Xbox Series X directly into the TV with the HDMI cable that came with the console.
If the picture comes back, keep the direct connection while you troubleshoot the extra gear.
For an AVR setup with no picture or sound, turn on the TV first. Once the TV shows a picture, turn on the AVR, then turn on the console.
Use the TV remote’s Input button to switch the AVR input away from the console and back again, such as from HDMI1 to HDMI2 and back to HDMI1.
Restart the AVR after that sequence.
Power cycle the Xbox completely
Try this after the cable, TV input, and direct-connection checks are done. A full power cycle clears a stuck blank-screen state without erasing games, apps, or settings.
Press and hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds until the console shuts down completely.
Unplug the console’s power cable.
Wait 10 seconds.
Plug the power cable back in.
Press the Xbox button on the console to turn it on.
If the screen only goes blank after returning to Home, use the same shutdown method, then turn the console back on with the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox Wireless Controller.
Reset the Xbox display output
Use low-resolution mode when the console turns on but the TV still cannot show the picture. Eject any disc from the Xbox Series X first.
Press and hold the Power button on the front of the console for 10 seconds to turn it off. Then press and hold Power and Eject until you hear a beep, and keep holding until the second beep about 10 seconds later or until the console starts in low-resolution mode.
After the picture returns, press the Xbox button to open the guide. Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options, then choose the resolution you want under Display.
If the blank screen keeps coming back in an AVR setup, open Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > Video fidelity & overscan. Under the Display dropdown, select HDMI.
Adjust video modes that can blank the screen
Some video features can cause a blank screen or HDMI compatibility issue even when the port itself is working. Start with 4K and HDR detection by going to Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details.
For missing or unstable 4K or HDR modes, open Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > Video fidelity & overscan, then make sure Auto-detect (Recommended) is selected. Xbox says 4K is not available when HDMI or DVI is manually selected.
If 4K content triggers a blank screen, go to Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes and uncheck Allow 4K. For a blank screen after starting Blu-ray playback, turn off Allow 24Hz in Video modes.
If Dolby Vision causes a blank screen or latency, go to Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes > Allow Dolby Vision > Off. If the screen goes blank right after enabling Dolby Vision, unplug and reconnect the HDMI cable, then reboot the Xbox.
If this method fails, go back to a direct Xbox-to-TV HDMI connection and continue with updates and resets.
Fix update or accessory related blank screens
This applies when the display goes blank during startup or while the console is trying to update. Accessories can interfere during that moment, even when the HDMI connection is fine.
Disconnect everything except the HDMI cable, power cord, and Ethernet cable.
Remove Storage Expansion Cards, USB hard drives, and battery charging stations.
Start or update the console with only the essentials connected.
After the update completes, reconnect the accessories.
If the console can show the guide, connect it to the internet and open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates.
Choose Console update available to begin, or confirm No console update available.
For easier maintenance later, stay in Updates and select Keep my console up to date. You can also select Keep my games & apps up to date.
Use an offline update or reset
Use these recovery options only after HDMI, TV, power, display, and update checks have not fixed the problem.
- 1.For an Offline System Update, use a Windows PC and a USB flash drive with at least 6 GB formatted as NTFS.
- 2.Open the Offline System Update file OSU1, save console update.zip, extract everything, copy $SystemUpdate to the flash drive root, then unplug the drive.
- 3.Power off the Xbox, unplug power, wait 30 seconds, plug power back in, hold Pair and Eject, press the Xbox button, keep holding 10 to 15 seconds, then release after the second power-up tone.
- 4.Insert the USB drive and select Offline system update in the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter.
- 5.To reset without deleting installed games and apps, choose Reset this Xbox, then Keep games and apps.
- 6.Use Remove everything only as a last resort, because it erases accounts, saved games, settings, home Xbox associations, and installed content.
Repair a damaged HDMI port
If the HDMI port is physically damaged or every display test fails, software fixes will not repair the connector. Microsoft Device services starts with signing in with your Microsoft account, selecting the Xbox that needs repair, and following the onscreen service order steps.
Warranty repairs are free, while out-of-warranty repairs incur a fee. In supported regions, Microsoft Authorized Service Providers can also handle in-person repair through listed providers such as uBreakiFix or Currys.
Microsoft also offers Xbox Series X replacement components for supported out-of-warranty consoles with a 14-digit serial number. Read the Service Guide in full before starting, buy parts from Microsoft Store or iFixit, and follow the Service Guide and video instructions.
Self-repair requires moderate technical skill, and Xbox Support cannot assist with self-repairs. Choose Microsoft service or an authorized provider if opening the console is not the right job for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if the Xbox Series X HDMI port is actually broken?
Test the console directly with a different HDMI cable, a different HDMI port on the TV, and a different TV. If all of those fail after a power cycle and display reset, repair is the next supported route.
Can I use any HDMI cable with Xbox Series X?
For best results, use the included 2-meter Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. If you need a longer cable, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 features.
Why does my Xbox Series X work in low resolution but not 4K?
The TV, cable, AVR, or video mode may not be handling the 4K signal correctly. Use Auto-detect, check 4K TV details, bypass pass-through gear, and turn off Allow 4K if 4K content causes a blank screen.
Does Xbox Series X have HDMI in?
No. Xbox Series X|S consoles do not have an HDMI-in port, so cable and satellite boxes must connect directly to the TV.
