Your AirPods show as connected, but your music, video, or call is silent. Start with the audio output and volume, then work through charging and connection checks if the silence continues. For a reset, use the instructions that match your AirPods model.
Select your AirPods and restore playback volume
Wear your AirPods near your iPhone or iPad. Open Control Center, then tap the AirPlay button. Select your AirPods as the playback destination.
Start audio in your playback app. Raise the volume slider in Control Center while the audio is playing. Tip: The AirPlay button on the Lock Screen or Now Playing screen also lets you select your AirPods.
Choose the output on a computer or Android phone
Listening on a Mac, Windows PC, or Android phone? A Bluetooth connection alone does not determine where the audio plays, so follow the branch for your device.
On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output. Select your AirPods. Raise Output volume to a comfortable level. Clear Mute if it is selected.
On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Output. Select your AirPods. Raise the Windows volume slider.
For a Windows app that remains silent, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer > Apps. Unmute the affected app. Raise that app's volume. Set its Output device to your AirPods.
On Android, open Settings > Connected devices. Open Bluetooth or Saved devices if your phone groups the connection there. Tap the settings icon beside your AirPods.
Enable Media audio if the switch appears. This control is not present on every Android phone. For call-only silence, enable Phone audio if available in the same AirPods settings.
Stop unwanted pauses and device switching
Automatic pausing or switching interrupts playback even while your AirPods remain connected.
Resume audio in your playback app. The hardware alternative is a single stem press on AirPods 3, 4, 5, and AirPods Pro, or a press of the Digital Crown on AirPods Max.
If pausing keeps returning, wear and connect your AirPods. Open Settings > [AirPods name] on your iPhone or iPad. Open Audio & Routing if the detection control is not on the main settings page.
Turn off Automatic Ear Detection for a test, or Automatic Head Detection for AirPods Max. Resume playback to test whether wear detection is involved.
If speaking triggers the problem, open Control Center. This check applies to AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2 and 3, and AirPods Max 2. Touch and hold the volume control. Turn off Conversation Awareness.
If another Apple device keeps taking over, open Settings > [AirPods name] while wearing your connected AirPods. Open Audio & Routing if that submenu contains the connection setting. Open Connect to This [device]. Select When Last Connected to This [device].
For audio that moves to a car or speaker, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity. Turn on Keep Audio with Headphones if the control appears. If your device does not show it, reselect your AirPods through the AirPlay button.
Check charging when one AirPod is silent
Test the quiet earbud on its own before resetting the pair.
- 1.Charge the case, then put both AirPods inside for 30 seconds.
- 2.Open the case near your iPhone or iPad and confirm that both earbuds are charging.
- 3.Wear only the silent AirPod, leaving the other one inside the closed case.
- 4.Connect and play audio through that earbud.
- 5.If it works, charge both earbuds for another 30 seconds and test them together.
- 6.If one side remains silent or unusually quiet, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance and center the slider.
Isolate silence in just one app
Play audio already stored on your device, keeping the device a few feet from your AirPods. If local audio works but streaming does not, investigate the stream or network. For intermittent dropouts, move away from obstructions, crowded wireless areas, microwave ovens, and wireless speakers.
In Spotify, tap the device icon during playback. Select the phone or computer connected to your AirPods. Spotify Connect sends playback to another device when that device is selected, even while your AirPods are connected locally.
For a frozen app on a Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and pause; on a Home-button iPhone, double-click Home to reach the previews. Swipe the affected app's preview upward. Reopen the app and try playback.
If the problem remains confined to that app, open App Store > profile icon > App Updates. Install its available update.
Refresh Bluetooth and pair again
On iPhone, try a fresh connection before a full AirPods reset.
- 1.Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth off.
- 2.Turn Bluetooth back on, reconnect your AirPods, and test playback.
- 3.If silence continues, tap the information button beside your AirPods in Settings > Bluetooth, choose Forget This Device, and confirm.
- 4.On a Face ID iPhone, hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears. On iPhone SE 2 or 3, hold the side button alone. Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button to restart.
- 5.Reconnect your AirPods using their setup prompts, then play audio again.
Reset your AirPods using the controls for your model
Persistent connection trouble is the issue to tackle with a reset after ordinary re-pairing fails.
For AirPods 1, 2, or 3 and AirPods Pro 1 or 2, close both earbuds in the case for 30 seconds. Open Settings > Bluetooth on your paired iPhone or iPad. Tap the information button beside your AirPods if they are still listed. Choose Forget This Device.
Confirm the removal. Open the case lid. Hold the rear setup button for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white. Follow the nearby device's setup prompts to reconnect.
For AirPods 4, either AirPods 5 model, or AirPods Pro 3, close both earbuds in the case for 30 seconds. Forget the AirPods through Settings > Bluetooth > information button > Forget This Device if they are still listed. Open the lid.
Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on. Double-tap again when the light flashes white. Double-tap a third time when the flashing speeds up. Follow the setup prompts once the light flashes amber and then white.
If white never appears, close the case for 20 seconds. Retry the front-of-case tap sequence.
For AirPods Max, charge the headphones to at least 50% before restarting. Hold the listening mode button and Digital Crown together, releasing them when the light flashes amber.
If that restart does not help, hold the same two controls for approximately 15 seconds, until the light flashes amber and then white, to perform a factory reset. Apple also permits a reset when the headphones will not charge. Pair AirPods Max again after the factory reset.
Give firmware updates time to install
This brings your AirPods firmware up to date when an update is available.
Connect your AirPods over Bluetooth to an updated iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is connected to Wi-Fi. For AirPods or AirPods Pro, plug the charging case into power.
Put both earbuds inside the case. Close the lid. Leave the case within Bluetooth range of the Apple device for at least 30 minutes.
For AirPods Max, connect a charging cable to the bottom-right earphone and a power source instead. Leave AirPods Max within Bluetooth range of the Apple device for at least 30 minutes.
Reconnect your AirPods after the wait. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside your AirPods, then scroll to the About section to check the firmware version.
Clean your AirPods and arrange service if silence persists
Obstructed meshes and charging problems deserve attention when the output and connection checks have not helped. Follow Apple's cleaning instructions for your exact model, using its diagrams to identify the cleanable meshes before applying liquid: AirPods cleaning instructions or AirPods Pro cleaning instructions.
For debris at the case's charging port, use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Do not insert objects into the ports or let liquid inside.
For water trapped in an AirPods Pro ear tip, hold the tip opening downward and tap the AirPod against a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Let the parts dry completely before reuse.
If charging, cleaning, selecting the correct output, re-pairing, and resetting still leave your AirPods silent, arrange service or replacement through Apple's cleaning and service options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my AirPods play music but stay silent during calls?
Calls have a separate routing control on iPhone. Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing and choose the Bluetooth headset destination. This setting affects phone and FaceTime calls, not ordinary music or video playback.
Why are my AirPods very quiet after reconnecting?
A headphone-exposure notification can lower the volume at the next Bluetooth connection. Raise playback volume to a comfortable level. Review Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety > Reduce Loud Audio for a volume limit.
Can I update AirPods firmware without owning an Apple device?
If you do not have a nearby compatible iPhone, iPad, or Mac, arrange an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider visit through the appointment link in Apple's AirPods firmware support page.
Does tapping Bluetooth in Control Center turn Bluetooth off completely?
No. It disconnects accessories without completely disabling the Bluetooth radio. For a full Bluetooth toggle on iPhone or iPad, use Settings > Bluetooth.
