AirPods Max head detection not working means audio keeps playing when you take them off, fails to resume when you put them back on within 15 seconds, or ignores Automatic Head Detection. Start with the setting itself and the physical fit, then move through the Apple-supported restart, pairing, firmware, reset, and service steps.
Switch Automatic Head Detection off and on
This fixes a stale AirPods Max setting.
Wear your AirPods Max and make sure they are connected to your iPhone or iPad.
Open Settings.
Tap [name of your AirPods] near the top of the screen.
Turn Automatic Head Detection off.
Turn Automatic Head Detection back on, then test audio again.
On Mac, wear your AirPods Max and make sure they are connected.
Open System Settings.
Select [name of your AirPods] in the sidebar.
Turn Automatic Head Detection off and back on.
Use the Digital Crown while you troubleshoot
Press the Digital Crown once to pause audio when head detection does not pause it for you.
Press the Digital Crown again to resume playback.
Use the hardware control as your workaround while you test the fixes below.
The Digital Crown does not repair the sensor, but it keeps playback under your control.
Check the cushions and left right fit
The ear cushions are marked L and R, and they need to match your ears. Put the left earphone on your left ear and the right earphone on your right ear.
Remove the headphones and check that the cushions are attached correctly before testing again. Do not use AirPods Max with the ear cushions removed.
If head detection still fails after the cushions are correctly placed, clean the headphones next.
Clean the cushions and headband properly
Use this when your AirPods Max have dirt, residue, or buildup on the cushions, headband, or exterior. Apple says debris buildup can affect device performance.
Do not run AirPods Max under water.
Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
If the headphones were exposed to substances that cause stains or damage, wipe them with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water.
Dry them with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
Keep liquid out of every opening.
For the cushions and headband, mix 1 teaspoon or 5 ml of liquid laundry detergent into 1 cup or 250 ml of water.
Remove the cushions from the ear cups.
Hold AirPods Max upside down while cleaning the headband.
Wipe the cushions and headband with a lint-free cloth dipped in the cleaning mixture and wrung slightly.
Wipe them again with a separate cloth slightly dampened with fresh water.
Dry everything with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
Lay the headphones flat and let them dry for at least a day before reattaching the cushions and using them.
Restart AirPods Max from the buttons
A temporary AirPods Max software issue is the main cause to rule out after the setting, fit, and cleaning checks.
Charge your AirPods Max to at least 50 percent before restarting them.
Press and hold the listening mode button and the Digital Crown until the LED flashes amber, then release.
Use about 10 seconds for this restart. Holding longer starts the factory reset process instead.
Put the headphones back on and test Automatic Head Detection again.
Forget the AirPods Max and pair again
Use this when head detection still fails on one device, or when your AirPods Max behave inconsistently after a restart. Refreshing the Bluetooth pairing is an Apple-supported troubleshooting path.
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
Tap [name of your AirPods] near the top of the screen.
Tap Forget This Device. This removes the AirPods from all devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Go to the Home Screen, take AirPods Max out of the Smart Case, and hold them next to the iPhone or iPad within 60 seconds.
Tap Connect when the setup animation appears, then tap Done.
On Mac, open System Settings, select [name of your AirPods] in the sidebar, and choose Forget This Device.
To pair again on Mac, open System Settings, go to Bluetooth, make sure Bluetooth is on, hold the listening mode button for about 5 seconds until the status light flashes white, select your AirPods, and click Connect.
Update AirPods Max firmware
Firmware updates run through a paired Apple device, not a direct download. After restart and pairing fixes fail, use Apple’s firmware process.
Update your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS. Turn on Bluetooth, connect AirPods Max by Bluetooth, and connect the device to Wi-Fi.
Plug the charging cable into the bottom-right earphone. Plug the other end into a USB charger or port, keep AirPods Max in Bluetooth range of the iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and wait at least 30 minutes.
Reconnect AirPods Max and check the firmware version again. Apple’s researched firmware page listed AirPods Max 2 at 8E258, AirPods Max 1 USB-C at 7E108, and AirPods Max 1 Lightning at 6F25.
Reset AirPods Max only after the basics
Use this when AirPods Max are still not working correctly after restart, cleaning, re-pairing, and firmware checks.
- 1.Charge AirPods Max to at least 50 percent.
- 2.Press and hold the listening mode button and the Digital Crown for 15 seconds.
- 3.Release when the LED flashes amber, then white.
- 4.Connect AirPods Max again to your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other device.
- 5.If the setup animation does not appear, hold the listening mode button for about 5 seconds until the status light flashes white, then select AirPods in Settings or System Settings > Bluetooth.
Service without opening the headphones
This is for AirPods Max that still fail after every Apple-supported home fix.
If the headphones are tied to an Apple Account, remove them before service or when account association blocks setup.
On iPhone or iPad, open Find My, tap Devices or Items, tap your AirPods, swipe up on the handle, choose Remove, Remove Item, or Remove This Device, then tap Remove.
On Mac, open Find My, select Devices, choose your AirPods, click the More Info button on the map, and choose Remove This Device.
Start Apple service through Apple Service and Repair for AirPods. Apple lists in-person support, mail-in service, and AppleCare Express Replacement where available.
Do not remove the AirPods Max headband or earcup assembly, and do not clean internal connectors as a consumer repair. Apple’s handling guidance says AirPods contain sensitive electronic components and can be damaged if disassembled.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave Automatic Head Detection turned off?
Yes. Apple lets you turn Automatic Head Detection on or off from AirPods settings on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. With it off, use the Digital Crown to play and pause audio manually.
Why did forgetting AirPods Max remove them from my other Apple devices?
Apple says Forget This Device removes the AirPods from all devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so pair them again afterward.
Can I manually install AirPods Max firmware?
No. There is no direct consumer firmware download. Apple delivers updates through a paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac while AirPods Max are charging and in Bluetooth range.
Should I reset iPhone network settings for this problem?
Use it only after AirPods-specific fixes. The current Apple path is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings, and it removes network settings, previously used networks, some VPN settings, and resets the device name to “iPhone.”
