Your Ring doorbell reconnects, then drops offline again. Start with the error in the Ring app, then check the power and network connection behind it. The fixes below cover battery, wired, and Ethernet models, with a factory reset saved for last.
Find out what the offline error means
Tap the offline icon on your doorbell’s tile in the Ring app dashboard.
Follow the troubleshooting instructions attached to its error code.
Open menu (☰) > Devices, select your doorbell, and tap Device Health.
Check Last Health Check first. An old reading is not a current measurement.
Review Battery Level, Power Source, Signal Strength, and Network Name to identify the power or connection problem.
On wired models with power reporting, inspect Transformer Voltage or Power Output.
Open Ring System Status from Device Health to check for an incident affecting doorbells or the app.
If Ring reports an incident, monitor its resolution before changing your setup.
Tip: Keep the error code handy for Ring Support.
If the doorbell has lost power
A depleted battery or inadequate wired power takes the doorbell offline. Use the power information in Device Health to choose the instructions for your model.
For a removable Quick Release Battery Pack, remove the security screws and faceplate.
Press the battery’s release tab to slide the pack out.
Connect the appropriate USB charging cable and charge until only the green light remains. Follow the battery’s own charging instructions for other pack designs.
Reinsert the charged pack until it clicks.
Replace the faceplate and original security screws.
Allow the doorbell to start up.
For an integrated-battery model, release the doorbell from its bracket using its security screws or removal tool.
Open the charging-port cover if fitted.
Connect the appropriate USB cable to a supply rated at least 1 amp. Allow up to 10 hours for charging.
Replace the charging-port cover after charging.
Remount the doorbell.
For Battery Doorbell 2K attached to chime wiring, switch off its breaker first.
Use the removal tool to release the doorbell.
Disconnect the attached wiring.
Remove the charging-port rubber plug.
Charge through USB-C.
Securely replace the rubber plug before reinstalling the doorbell.
If the battery will not charge, test the outlet with another appliance.
Try another charging cable or USB adapter next.
For a transformer-powered doorbell, check the exact model’s power requirements and installation diagram.
Have incompatible power equipment corrected with electrical power disconnected. Adapter-powered installations require a compatible Ring DC supply.
For the original Video Doorbell Elite, check the Elite Power Kit’s AC adapter and outlet.
Check that the router or access point connects to Internet In.
Check that To Doorbell connects to the doorbell’s Ethernet socket.
For Wired Doorbell 4K Elite, check that its PoE+-capable switch or injector is active.
Check its Category 5e-or-better cable connection at the doorbell. Keep the cable run below 100 metres.
Restore the router connection and reconnect Wi-Fi
Use this sequence after an internet interruption or a change to your router, Wi-Fi name, or password.
- 1.Disconnect power from your modem and router for 30 seconds.
- 2.Reconnect their power and allow internet service to return.
- 3.Stand near the doorbell with your phone and open the Ring dashboard.
- 4.Tap menu (☰) > Devices, select your doorbell, and tap the Device Health tile. Find the Network section.
- 5.Select Reconnect or Change Network and follow the prompts using your current Wi-Fi password.
- 6.If reconnection fails, use Change Network to try a guest network or a 2.4 GHz network. Band support depends on the model; not every Ring doorbell supports 5 GHz.
A connection that drops again needs a signal check
Reconnecting does not fix weak coverage at the front door. Open menu (☰) > Devices, select your doorbell, then open Device Settings > Device Health > Signal Strength. Ring rates RSSI from -70 to -80 as poor and -80 or worse as very poor.
Move the router closer to the doorbell.
Reduce obstructions between them. Metal, masonry, appliances, electronics, and mirrors weaken reception.
If coverage remains weak, add a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system. A compatible Ring Chime Pro also extends the connection.
To set up Chime Pro, select Set Up a Device on the Ring dashboard and follow its prompts.
Position Chime Pro approximately halfway between the router and doorbell.
To connect your existing doorbell, open menu (☰) > Devices, select the doorbell, then follow Device Health > Change Network > Change Wifi Network > Connect to Chime Pro.
For a doorbell already connected through Chime Pro, select the Chime Pro tile under Devices, then open Device Settings > Chime Pro Network > Run Placement Test.
Move Chime Pro to another outlet when the test requests it.
Repeat the placement test until reception improves.
If placement changes do not restore a stable connection, connect your phone to the doorbell’s Wi-Fi for a speed test.
Disconnect the phone’s VPN before testing.
Open speedtest.net beside the router and tap Go.
Repeat the test at the doorbell.
Compare upload capacity with Ring’s recommendations per device: 1 Mbps for 720p, 2 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 1536p, 10 Mbps for 2K, and 15 Mbps for 4K. Add the requirements for multiple devices.
If upload capacity falls short beside the router, contact your internet provider to resolve inadequate service. If it is adequate beside the router but falls short at the doorbell, improve Wi-Fi coverage using the steps above.
Stop the battery from running down again
Frequent motion activity and unnecessary video use drain a battery doorbell until it shuts down.
Once the doorbell is online, open menu (☰) > Devices, select your doorbell, and tap Power Settings.
On models with these controls, inspect Battery Status and Feature Power Usage.
Tap flagged features to adjust their power use.
Reduce unnecessary Live View use and linked recordings when they cause excessive activity.
Open Motion Settings > Motion Sensitivity to lower motion sensitivity.
Narrow Motion Zones to the areas you need covered.
On models offering motion-frequency controls, open Advanced Settings > Motion Frequency and select Regularly or Periodically. These choices introduce pauses between motion checks.
Bring a cold battery or device indoors to warm before USB charging. Charging stops below freezing, including on battery models maintained by wiring or solar.
Let an overheated device cool indoors. Excessive heat can trigger Device Cooldown followed by shutdown.
Relocate it to shade where practical.
If an aging removable battery still performs poorly after charging and troubleshooting, test a second compatible battery. Supplemental wiring or solar charging does not eliminate battery use.
Reboot using the method for your model
Try a reboot when power and network checks have not restored a stable connection. The app’s reboot command works only while the doorbell is connected to Wi-Fi.
For a connected doorbell, open menu (☰) > Devices, select your doorbell, then tap Device Health > Reboot This Device.
Confirm the reboot.
Allow several minutes for it to finish.
For an offline model with a removable battery, take out the battery pack for 10 seconds. This also applies to battery models connected to trickle-charge wiring.
Reinstall the pack.
For an internal-battery doorbell, access the setup button, removing the doorbell from its mounting if necessary.
Briefly press and hold the setup button. Ring gives no exact duration for this reboot press; a 20-second hold performs a factory reset.
For a directly powered plug-in doorbell, unplug its supply for 10 seconds.
Reconnect the supply.
For a directly hardwired doorbell, switch its circuit breaker off for a few seconds.
Restore power at the breaker. Switching off trickle-charge wiring alone leaves a battery model running on its battery.
Factory reset only after the other fixes fail
Still dropping offline after the power, coverage, and network checks? A factory reset is the last troubleshooting step. It requires physical access to the doorbell.
Locate the setup button: on the back of internal-battery models, under the front faceplate on removable-battery models, or beneath the faceplate on the right on wired models. Check your model’s installation instructions for unusual placements.
Hold the setup button for 20 seconds, then release it.
Open Set Up a Device in the Ring app and follow your model’s prompts to reconnect it to your home network. Wi-Fi models rejoin your home Wi-Fi; for an Elite model, restore its Ethernet and PoE connection first.
Leave the doorbell powered and connected while any required firmware update finishes. Do not interrupt power or press the setup button during the update.
If it still goes offline, open Ring’s Contact Us page and select Chat Now or Call Us. Give support the exact model, offline error, power information, and connection history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I remove the doorbell from my Ring account to reconnect it?
No. Routine reconnection does not require removing or deactivating the doorbell. Use Reconnect or Change Network in Device Health. Reserve account removal for device management or instructions from Ring Support.
Can a VPN make my Ring doorbell seem unavailable?
Yes. VPN routing can cause app connection failures, blank video, or loading errors. Ring does not support VPN use with its apps. Disconnect the VPN in its app, or configure its exclusion feature for Ring traffic, then retry Ring.
What does Cloud server unreachable mean in the Ring app?
This message concerns the app’s connection to Ring’s cloud. Open your phone’s network settings, turn off Wi-Fi, and retry over cellular. If you were using cellular, switch to Wi-Fi instead. This changes the phone’s connection, not the doorbell’s network.
What if Alexa says the doorbell is unavailable but the Ring app works?
Test Live View in Ring or on ring.com, then test an unrelated Alexa function. If Ring works independently, check that Alexa and Ring use the correct accounts and restart the Alexa device. Troubleshoot the Ring Skill integration instead of resetting the doorbell.
