Your Chromebook screen freezes, flickers, or changes colors, and suddenly a simple task becomes frustrating. Start with a restart, then jump to the checks that match what you see. These steps cover unwanted display settings, software glitches, and when to move on to a reset or repair.

Start with a restart

Start here for temporary freezes, rendering glitches, or trouble after waking your Chromebook. For a black or unusually dim screen, check brightness first: ASUS notes that minimum brightness can turn the screen off.

Press the brightness-up key repeatedly if the screen is black or dim. Then select the time and choose Power > Restart.

If the screen is frozen and those controls do not respond, hold the physical Power button until the Chromebook shuts down. A forced shutdown risks losing unsaved work. Turn the Chromebook back on, then check whether the same problem returns.

Give ChromeOS a chance to fix the problem

Updating installs available software fixes for ChromeOS and its built-in browser. Connect your Chromebook to Wi-Fi, then select the time and open Settings > About ChromeOS. Select Check for updates. After the update downloads, select Restart.

To check update eligibility, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details. Read Update schedule. A Chromebook past its support period no longer receives the newer fixes delivered through updates.

When the picture looks wrong instead of flickering

Unwanted display and accessibility settings explain enlargement, unusual colors, and automatic brightness changes. For an oversized or shrunken desktop, press Ctrl + Shift + 0 to reset screen scaling. If only the current webpage has the wrong size, press Ctrl + 0 instead.

For a rotated screen, open Settings > Device > Displays > Built-in Display. Adjust Orientation to correct the rotation.

For a magnified desktop or magnified strip, open Settings > Accessibility > Display and magnification. Google's documentation also uses the shorter label Display. Turn off the enabled Full-screen magnifier or Docked magnifier.

For inverted colors or unwanted grayscale, turn off accidentally enabled Color inversion or Color correction on that same page. Keep any correction you need for comfortable viewing.

If the screen turns yellow or orange, select the time, then switch off Night Light. To stop scheduled tint changes, open Settings > Device > Displays > Night Light > Schedule and select Never.

For brightness that changes with room lighting, open Settings > Device > Displays. Select the built-in display, then turn off Automatically adjust display brightness if present. This control requires a supported Chromebook with an ambient-light sensor. Select the time, then move the brightness slider to a comfortable level.

For environmental color shifts, return to the internal display under Settings > Device > Displays. Turn off Ambient colors if present. This setting requires adaptive screen-color support; neither it nor automatic brightness is an established repair for panel flickering.

Narrow down a browser or app glitch

For a single webpage that freezes or renders incorrectly, select the affected tab. Press Ctrl + Shift + r to refresh it. Close unused tabs, apps, and windows if the Chromebook freezes or tabs repeatedly reload. Press Shift + Esc to open Task Manager if the problem continues.

Inspect the running tasks. If the glitch began after installing an extension, open Chrome's More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn off one extension, then retest the affected page, repeating this comparison for each extension.

To remove an extension associated with the problem, select Remove. Confirm with Remove.

For freezes associated with a recently installed app, open Launcher. Right-click the app, then select Uninstall or Remove from Chrome, depending on the app. Confirm with Uninstall. Keep changes separate so you can tell which one affects the glitch.

Guest mode gives you a comparison without your saved preferences. Sign out of your Chromebook to begin.

Select Browse as Guest, then try to reproduce the same screen problem. If the option is missing on a personal Chromebook, the owner can open Settings > Privacy and security > Manage other people. Enable Guest browsing.

A glitch that disappears in Guest mode points your next checks toward account settings or extensions, but it does not prove a particular cause. If the screen still glitches, try an external-display comparison next, or move to a hardware reset if you have no compatible monitor.

What an external monitor can tell you

Connect a compatible external monitor for another way to view the Chromebook. Open Settings > Device > Displays and enable Mirror Built-in Display.

Compare the screens while reproducing the glitch. Different behavior helps narrow the investigation, but a clean external picture does not identify a particular failed internal component.

If only the external monitor has trouble, select it under Settings > Device > Displays. Adjust Resolution or the offered refresh-rate control. Available modes depend on your hardware; there is no universal 60 Hz fix.

If ChromeOS reports Cable may not support displays, replace the cable with a display-compatible USB-C cable meeting Google's SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-higher requirement.

Try a hardware reset after the simpler checks

Back up needed files in Downloads first, since a hardware reset risks deleting some of them. Shut down your Chromebook. On most Chromebook laptops, hold Refresh while tapping Power. Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts up.

For a Chromebook tablet, hold Volume Up + Power instead for at least 10 seconds. Release both buttons. Use your model's hardware-reset instructions if the standard keys do not apply.

Reset persistent software problems

Safety reset and Powerwash address persistent software problems, with different effects on your data. Start with Settings > System preferences > Reset > Safety reset, if available. It disables extensions, resets settings, and deletes cookies and temporary site data while keeping local files and apps.

Select Done when it finishes. A brief black screen during Safety reset is expected. Retest the screen.

If Safety reset is unavailable or the glitch persists, back up your local files before Powerwash. Powerwash erases local accounts, apps, settings, and files. Sign out of the Chromebook, then press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r. Select Restart.

Choose Powerwash, then select Continue. Complete setup, then test the screen before restoring optional apps and extensions.

When the screen needs further diagnosis

Persistent flickering, lines, or damage warrant manufacturer assessment, especially after software troubleshooting fails. Contact your Chromebook brand's support team with the model, symptoms, and results of the checks you tried.

For repeated freezes, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics and run the CPU and memory tests. Share failed-test results with the manufacturer. These tests do not repair LCD or pixel faults.

On a school or work Chromebook, ask your administrator for help with locked settings, forced extensions, or resets. Access to troubleshooting features depends on the device's management policies.

ChromeOS recovery is a last-resort option for persistent operating-system problems. It reinstalls ChromeOS and erases local data. Back up first, then follow Google's recovery procedure for your model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I turn off hardware acceleration to fix Chromebook flickering?

No current ChromeOS browser setting matches the commonly recommended Chrome > Settings > System > Use graphics acceleration when available path. Google also does not endorse experimental GPU flags as universal flicker fixes.

Why does my Chromebook screen go dark when I stop using it?

Inactivity and sleep settings control when the screen turns off. Open Settings > System preferences > Power. Choose Keep display on for While inactive and plugged in or While inactive and on battery, according to your preference. To wake a laptop, open its lid, then press a key or swipe the touchpad. On a tablet, press Power.

Can Battery Saver make my screen look dim or sluggish?

Yes. Battery Saver reduces brightness and CPU performance. Connect the charger to turn it off. Alternatively, select the battery icon, then open Settings > System preferences > Power. Turn off Battery Saver.

How do I report a screen glitch that started after an update?

Reproduce the problem. Press Alt + Shift + i. Describe it in Tell us what's happening. Select Continue. Choose relevant attachments or diagnostic data. Select Send. A bug report documents the issue; it does not immediately repair it.
