A circular reference can stop Excel from calculating the way you expect, and the warning is easy to miss once the workbook gets busy. The fastest fix is to make Excel show you the loop, open the problem cell, and correct the formula that points back to itself. Start with the built-in clues, then move into tracing when the loop runs through more than one cell.

Check The Status Bar First

The most common clue is the Circular References message in the Excel status bar.

Look at the bottom of the Excel window for Circular References and the cell address beside it.

Go to that cell and inspect the formula in the formula bar.

Fix any formula that refers to its own cell, includes its own cell inside a range, or depends on another formula that leads back to it.

Check the status bar again after each fix.

When the status bar shows Circular References without a cell address, use the circular-reference menu next.

Open Excel's Circular References Menu

In the Excel desktop app, open the workbook and go to Formulas > Error Checking > Circular References. Excel lists the circular-reference cells it can identify from that menu.

Select a listed cell address to jump to the formula. Edit the formula, then return to Formulas > Error Checking > Circular References and open the next listed address.

Repeat the process until the status bar no longer shows Circular References. Microsoft says the full tracing tools are available in Excel for Windows desktop and Excel for Mac desktop.

Respond To The First Warning

This fixes the circular reference Excel catches when the warning first appears in a session.

Select OK in the circular-reference warning.

Go to the formula Excel flagged.

Edit the formula if the reference is accidental.

Use Excel's iterative calculation setting only when the circular reference is intentional.

Do not wait for the same warning to appear again. Later circular references in the same Excel session do not always show the same dialog.

Trace The Formula Loop

Select the cell shown under Circular References or the formula cell you suspect.

Open Formulas > Trace Precedents to see which cells feed the selected formula.

Open Formulas > Trace Dependents to see which formulas depend on the selected cell.

Follow the arrows until the calculation path returns to the original formula.

Press Ctrl+G on Windows or Control+G on Mac to jump to a referenced cell faster.

Use tracing when the circular reference runs through several cells instead of one obvious self-reference.

Search For The Command

Some Excel desktop layouts place the command where it is harder to spot. Use Excel's search box and search for Error Checking or Circular References.

Select the matching command from the search results, then open Circular References to review the listed cells. If the command is disabled, select a worksheet cell first and run the search again.

This search only opens the same Excel desktop tool. The repair still happens by opening each listed cell and correcting the formula.

Turn Off Iterative Calculation Temporarily

Open the calculation settings in Excel desktop.

On Windows, go to File > Options > Formulas and clear or inspect Enable iterative calculation.

On Mac, go to Excel > Preferences > Calculation and clear or inspect Use iterative calculation.

Use Formulas > Error Checking > Circular References again after iteration is off.

When iterative calculation is intentional, review Maximum Iterations and Maximum Change.

Excel for the web shows calculation options, but it does not change iteration limits.

Inspect Messy Workbooks Manually

The most common hidden loop is a formula range that includes its own cell.

Turn on formula view with Formulas > Show Formulas or press Ctrl+`.

Scan for direct self-references, ranges that include the current cell, and formulas that point through other cells back to themselves.

Use Home > Find & Select > Go To Special, choose Formulas, and select OK to highlight formula cells for review.

Open Formulas > Defined Names > Name Manager and review each Refers to value when the workbook uses named ranges or named formulas.

In Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac, leave Formulas > Calculation Options > Format Stale Values enabled because cells inside circular references can show stale-value formatting. Perpetual releases such as Excel 2024, Excel 2021, and Excel 2019 do not include this setting, so skip this step there.

Move Web Or Mobile Files To Desktop Excel

Excel for the web and Excel mobile have limited formula-auditing commands. For the complete circular-reference workflow, open the workbook in Excel for Windows or Excel for Mac and use Formulas > Error Checking > Circular References.

In Excel for the web, Formulas > Calculation Options includes Automatic, Automatic Except for Data Tables, Manual, and Calculate Workbook. Those options affect the current browser workbook, but iteration behavior requires Open in Excel.

Do not use older browser-workbook instructions as the repair path for circular references. If desktop Excel still does not reveal the loop, return to Trace Precedents, Trace Dependents, Show Formulas, Go To Special, and Name Manager.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Excel show Circular References without a cell address?

The circular reference is on another worksheet or Excel is not showing the address in the status bar. Open desktop Excel and use Formulas > Error Checking > Circular References to inspect the listed cells.

Can Excel for the web find circular references?

Excel for the web has limited formula-auditing tools. Open the workbook in Excel for Windows or Mac for the full circular-reference workflow.

Should I turn on iterative calculation to remove the warning?

Use iterative calculation only when the circular reference is intentional. For accidental loops, inspect or clear the setting, find the circular formula, and correct the reference.

What should I check if no formula refers to itself?

Use Trace Precedents and Trace Dependents, turn on Show Formulas, inspect formula cells with Go To Special, and review Name Manager for named references in the loop.
