A WhatsApp contact sticks around when the name is still saved in WhatsApp Contacts, your phone address book, iCloud, Google Contacts, or another synced contact account. Remove it at the source, then refresh WhatsApp on Android if the old entry is still on the list.

Delete a WhatsApp contact on iPhone

Use this when the person appears in WhatsApp on your iPhone and the saved entry is coming from WhatsApp's contact screen. With WhatsApp Contacts sync on, treat this as a contact deletion, not just a WhatsApp-only cleanup.

Open WhatsApp and go to Chats. Tap the search bar, enter the contact's name, and open the contact. Then tap the contact's name at the top of the chat. Tap Edit, choose Delete Contact, then confirm with Delete.

Remove a WhatsApp contact on Android

On Android, remove the saved entry from the WhatsApp contact card.

  1. 1.Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats tab.
  2. 2.Tap New chat or use Search, then select the contact.
  3. 3.Tap the contact name to open contact info.
  4. 4.Open More options, then choose View contact or Edit.
  5. 5.Open More options again, tap Delete contact, then confirm with Delete.
  6. 6.For phone-address-book contacts, choose View in address book and delete the entry in Contacts.

Clear it from your phone contacts

When WhatsApp is showing a person from your phone address book, remove the contact from the app or account that owns the record. WhatsApp picks up the deletion after contacts sync updates.

On iPhone, open Contacts, tap the contact, choose Edit, tap Delete Contact, then confirm with Delete Contact.

On Android with Google Contacts, open Contacts, tap the contact, open Contact settings, choose Delete, then confirm with Delete.

If the contact still appears after deletion, refresh WhatsApp contacts on Android or delete the record from the cloud account that stores it.

Delete synced contacts from iCloud or Google Contacts

Use this when the contact returns because iCloud or Google is syncing it back to the phone. Deleting it from the cloud source removes it from devices where that contact service is turned on, and WhatsApp reflects the synced change.

For iCloud, go to icloud.com/contacts, sign in, open All Contacts, and select the contact. Click the Actions button, choose Delete Contact, then confirm with Delete.

For Google Contacts on the web, go to contacts.google.com and select the contact's checkbox. Open More, choose Delete, then select Move to trash.

On a Mac, open Contacts, select one or more contacts, press the Delete key, then click Delete if prompted. Read-only accounts such as Google or Yahoo must be edited in that service.

Refresh WhatsApp on Android

This fixes a deleted contact that still appears because WhatsApp has not refreshed its contact list.

Open WhatsApp. Tap New chat. Open More options. Tap Refresh.

For stuck names or contact sync, open your phone's Settings. Go to Password, passkeys & accounts or Accounts. Choose WhatsApp. Tap Remove account.

Confirm with Remove account. Open WhatsApp again. Tap New chat. Open More options, then tap Refresh.

Hide a contact from WhatsApp on iPhone

If you want the person to stay in iPhone Contacts but disappear from WhatsApp access, use iPhone contact privacy controls. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts > WhatsApp and choose the contact access level.

On a screen that shows Limited Access, open Edit Selected Contacts and deselect the person. That hides the contact from WhatsApp without deleting it from Contacts.

To remove a whole contact account from local visibility, open Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts, tap the account, then turn off Contacts or tap Delete Account.

For iCloud contacts, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All next to Saved to iCloud, then turn off Contacts and choose whether to keep or delete the contacts already synced to the iPhone.

Manage WhatsApp contact storage

Open WhatsApp and go to Settings. Tap Privacy, then open Contacts.

Use the contact controls on Contacts to delete the individual WhatsApp-saved contact. To stop saving contacts to your WhatsApp account, turn off WhatsApp Contacts. Choose Delete when WhatsApp asks what to do with the stored contacts. If WhatsApp Contacts is not on your screen, use the phone contact or cloud contact method for that entry.

Avoid fixes that do not delete contacts

These actions change chats, safety settings, or app state, but they do not delete a WhatsApp contact.

  1. 1.Delete chat removes conversation history or the chat row, not the saved contact.
  2. 2.Clear chat clears messages, not the person from WhatsApp Contacts or your address book.
  3. 3.Archive chat hides the conversation from the main chat list, not the contact.
  4. 4.Block stops messages, calls, and status delivery, but the contact remains saved wherever it already exists.
  5. 5.Uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp is not a supported way to delete one specific contact.
  6. 6.SIM-card storage tricks and old phonebook workarounds are legacy methods; use Contacts, WhatsApp Contacts, iCloud, Google Contacts, or contact permissions instead.
