A slow game download leaves you wondering how much internet speed your Xbox One is actually getting. Start with the built-in test for download speed, upload speed, and latency. Then check the installation queue to see how fast your game is downloading right now.
Check your speed in Xbox settings
Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test network speed & statistics.
Once the test finishes, record your download speed, upload speed, and latency. The results also include packet loss, MTU, and wireless strength when applicable. The test works over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Looking for Detailed network statistics? Older instructions use that menu label, but the current option is Test network speed & statistics. Xbox still uses the older wording for the results screen.
Watch your actual game download rate
With a game or app downloading, open My games & apps > See all > Manage > Queue.
Read the download speed on the item being installed. This is the active download’s transfer rate, not upload speed or your connection’s maximum capacity. A different number from the built-in test does not mean either reading is wrong.
If the download is paused, highlight it.
Press the controller’s Menu button.
Select Resume installation.
If you still cannot get a download-rate reading, run Settings > General > Network settings > Test network speed & statistics to measure the connection separately.
Give the speed test a cleaner run
This stops downloads and gameplay activity that Xbox recommends pausing before a benchmark.
Open My games & apps > See all > Manage > Queue.
Highlight an active download.
Press the controller’s Menu button.
Select Pause installation.
Repeat those steps for each remaining active download.
Return to the Home screen and navigate to your most recently run game.
With the game highlighted, press the Menu button.
Select Quit.
Run Settings > General > Network settings > Test network speed & statistics again.
Review your console’s bandwidth usage
Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Bandwidth usage.
Check the current usage reading.
Review Usage over the last 12 hours for recent activity.
Look at Historical bandwidth usage for the longer-term record.
Use this screen to track data usage, not to test your connection’s maximum speed.
Try a connection check inside Netflix
For a speed reading inside Netflix, open the Netflix app on your Xbox.
Select your profile. If you are signed out, skip to the signed-out route below.
From Netflix’s home screen, press B to open the menu.
With the top-menu layout, select the profile icon at the upper left.
Select Get Help. With the left-menu layout, this option is at the bottom of the menu.
Select Check your Network.
Wait for the connection check and speed result.
If you are signed out and the screen displays Get Help, select Get Help > Check your Network.
Wait for the signed-out check to display its result.
If Netflix cannot complete the check, run Settings > General > Network settings > Test network speed & statistics on your Xbox.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these speed-test steps work on other Xbox models?
Yes. The built-in test works on Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, Xbox One X, and Xbox Series X|S running current system software.
Is Test network connection the same as the speed test?
Not quite, and Xbox documents it two ways. The Network settings page says Test network connection verifies that you are connected to your networking devices and can reach the internet, while Xbox’s slow-download guide says running it displays the detected download speed in your Detailed network statistics. If you want the full reading — download speed, upload speed, and latency together — choose Test network speed & statistics.
Does testing my phone’s speed tell me how fast my Xbox connection is?
No. A phone speed test measures the phone’s connection. The Xbox mobile app also supports remote control of the console’s built-in test, but the test runs on the Xbox and its results appear on the console display.
Which test checks whether my connection supports remote play?
Press the Xbox button. Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test remote play. Review Upstream bandwidth and Network latency. This checks remote-play suitability rather than providing a general download-speed benchmark.
