You want a new Xbox gamerpic, but uploading your own photo comes with more requirements than choosing a library picture. Start with the console or phone steps below, then check the upload limits if your custom image gets rejected. There are also options for PC, screenshots, achievement artwork, and avatar photos.

Change your gamerpic on an Xbox console

On Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, press the Xbox button on your controller.

Go to Profile & system, select your profile, then open My profile > Customize profile > Change gamerpic.

Select a picture from the gallery. Choosing a library picture also replaces an existing custom gamerpic.

If you cannot reach the picker through the guide, try Settings > Profile > Customize profile, then choose your gamerpic. If that route fails too, use the Xbox mobile app steps below.

Use your phone for a library picture or custom photo

The Xbox mobile app on iOS and Android lets you choose a library gamerpic or upload a photo from your phone. Custom photo uploads require an adult Microsoft account.

Sign in to the Xbox app with the account whose gamerpic you want to change.

Tap your gamerpic icon to open Profile.

Tap the edit icon beside your current gamerpic.

For a library image, select the picture you want.

Tap Save to use it.

For your own photo, tap the photo library icon instead.

Choose a picture from your device.

Pinch and drag to adjust the crop.

Tap Upload to submit the picture for review. Xbox reverts custom pictures that fail review.

Check the limits when a custom picture fails

Xbox rejects custom images that exceed its size limits.

Reduce your picture to no more than 25 MB and no more than 6,000 pixels before uploading it again.

For a console USB upload, save the picture as a JPG or PNG.

Choose an image at least 512 × 512 pixels to avoid the blurriness Xbox warns about with smaller pictures.

Choose a library picture if your Microsoft account is not an adult account. Custom-image uploads require an adult account.

If Xbox rejects your picture during review and reverts your gamerpic, submit a different image through Upload. To return to a library picture, select one in Change gamerpic.

Upload a picture from a USB drive

On Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, use an adult Microsoft account to upload a JPG or PNG from USB.

  1. 1.Connect the USB drive containing your picture to the console.
  2. 2.Press the Xbox button, then open Profile & system > your profile > My profile > Customize profile > Change gamerpic.
  3. 3.Select Create or upload a gamerpic > Upload an image.
  4. 4.Browse the USB drive and select your image file.
  5. 5.Select Upload to submit it for review.

Pick a library image in the Xbox PC app

For a library gamerpic on Windows, open the Xbox PC app and select View Profile.

Select the pencil icon over your current gamerpic.

Choose the library picture you want. For a custom photo, use the mobile app or the console USB method above.

Make a gamerpic from a screenshot or achievement

Your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One can turn a game screenshot or unlocked achievement artwork into a gamerpic.

  1. 1.Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > your profile > My profile > Customize profile > Change gamerpic.
  2. 2.Select Create or upload a gamerpic, then choose Select a screenshot or Select an achievement.
  3. 3.For a screenshot, highlight the image in Captures and press the Menu button. For achievement artwork, find an unlocked achievement in your game history and press A.
  4. 4.Select Create a gamerpic.
  5. 5.Adjust the framing.
  6. 6.Select Upload gamerpic.

Give your avatar a turn in the picture

For an avatar gamerpic, use Xbox Original Avatars on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or Windows. You can choose an animation and background for the photo.

Launch Xbox Original Avatars.

Press the Menu button and select Take a photo.

Adjust Animation to choose your avatar's pose or movement.

Adjust Background to set the scene.

Press the View button.

Select Save as gamerpic. These steps use a controller, including on Windows.

On a console with Xbox Original Avatars installed, you can also open the photo screen through Change gamerpic > Create or upload a gamerpic > Take a picture of my avatar.

Xbox retired Xbox Avatar Editor on January 9, 2025. Use Xbox Original Avatars for new avatar gamerpics.
