Need your Zoom name to look right before attendance starts or a recording begins? Zoom lets you change the name people see before you join, during a meeting, or from your saved profile. Start with the method that matches where you are right now.

Rename yourself during a Zoom meeting on desktop

Join the meeting in the Zoom desktop app.

In the meeting controls toolbar, click Participants.

Hover over your name in the participant list, then click the ellipsis icon.

Click Rename.

Enter the display name you want other people to see, then click Change.

This option appears only when the host allows participant renaming, and it is not available while you are in the Waiting Room.

Change your Zoom name during a meeting on phone

On iPhone, iPad, or Android, join the meeting in the Zoom mobile app.

In the meeting controls toolbar, tap Participants.

Tap your name, then tap Rename.

Enter the display name you want to use, then tap Done.

If Rename does not appear, ask the host to turn on participant renaming or rename you from their participant controls.

Fix the missing Rename option

The most common cause is that the host has disabled Allow participants to rename themselves.

Ask the host or co-host to enable renaming for the current meeting. On desktop, they can open Host tools, then turn on Rename Themselves for participants. On Zoom desktop app versions below 6.0.0, that menu is called Security instead.

On mobile, the host can tap More, then use Host tools or Security to enable Rename. In the Zoom Web App, the host can open Host tools or Security and enable Rename Themselves.

If you are in the Waiting Room, the host or co-host must rename you from Participants when waiting-room renaming is enabled.

Pick a Zoom name before joining

Open the Zoom desktop app.

Click Join a Meeting.

Enter the meeting ID in the Meeting ID field.

Enter the name you want displayed in the Name field.

Turn on Remember my name for future meetings if you want Zoom to keep using that name.

Click Join.

This is the cleanest option when you are not signed in or when you want a temporary name for one meeting.

Change your default Zoom display name

Use this when you want Zoom to remember your name across meetings and webinars instead of changing it every time you join. You can update it from the desktop app, mobile app, or the Zoom web portal.

In the desktop app, sign in, click your profile picture, choose Profile, then click My profile. Next to your account profile name, click Edit, enter your First Name, Last Name, and Display Name, then click Save.

In the mobile app, sign in and tap your profile picture in the top-left corner. Tap My profile, tap Display name under Personal, enter your First Name, Last Name, and Display Name, then tap Save.

In the Zoom web portal, sign in and click Profile in the navigation menu. Click Edit next to your account profile name, enter your First Name, Last Name, and Display Name, then click Save.

Join from a browser with a different name

The Zoom Web App lets you enter a display name before joining from a supported desktop browser. Zoom lists the Web App for Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Safari.

Click the meeting invite link, then click Cancel in the open or download prompt. At the bottom of the page, click join from your browser.

Click Allow when your browser asks for microphone or camera permission. Enter the name you want to use, turn on Remember my name for future meetings if you want, and click Join.

If join from your browser is not shown, use the Zoom desktop app or mobile app instead.

Rename someone else as host

Use the participant controls for the version of Zoom you are hosting from:

  1. 1.On desktop, sign in, start the meeting as host or join as co-host, then click Participants.
  2. 2.Find the participant, click the ellipsis icon beside their name, and click Rename.
  3. 3.On mobile, sign in, start the meeting as host, tap More, tap Participants, tap the participant's name, and tap Rename.
  4. 4.In the Zoom Web App, start the meeting, click Participants, hover over the participant, click More, and click Rename.
  5. 5.For someone still in the Waiting Room, open Participants, click More next to their name in the Waiting Room section, click Rename, enter the new name, and click Change.

Handle work or school Zoom accounts

This applies when your Zoom account is managed by an employer, school, or other organization. Admin, group, SSO, or SAML settings control your saved profile name and the meeting setting for participant renaming.

If your saved display name does not update, contact the person who manages your Zoom account. They can update the account setting or the name Zoom receives from your sign-in system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my Zoom name before joining a meeting?

Yes. In the Zoom desktop or mobile app, choose Join a Meeting, enter the meeting ID, type the display name you want, and join.

Does a one-meeting Zoom name change update my profile?

No. A name entered before joining or changed inside a meeting applies to that meeting. Edit your Zoom profile to change the saved default name.

Can I rename myself in the Zoom Waiting Room?

No. Participants cannot rename themselves while in the Waiting Room. The host or co-host can rename a waiting-room participant when that setting is enabled.

Can admins stop Zoom name changes?

Yes. Account, group, SSO, or SAML settings can block profile name edits or prevent participants from renaming themselves in meetings.
