Need to change your Microsoft 365 password but cannot find the setting in an Office app? The password belongs to your sign-in account: a personal Microsoft account for a consumer subscription, or an organization-managed account for work or school. Start with the matching account portal below, then use the recovery options if you have forgotten your password or lost access to verification.

Change your personal Microsoft account password

Use this browser method on your computer, phone, or tablet when you know your password.

  1. 1.Open account.microsoft.com and sign in with the personal Microsoft account you use for Microsoft 365.
  2. 2.Select Security > Change Password.
  3. 3.Enter your new password and complete any verification Microsoft requests.
  4. 4.Select Save.

Update a work or school account password

If your workplace or school manages your Microsoft 365 account, use its account portal. Your organization must permit this password-change flow.

Sign in at mysignins.microsoft.com, then select Password. Enter and confirm your new password, and select Submit. Complete any authentication requested.

If you have forgotten the password, open passwordreset.microsoftonline.com. Enter your account identifier and the displayed verification characters, then select Next. Complete the configured identity-verification process and create your replacement password. Self-service reset requires your organization to enable it and your verification methods to be registered.

If the reset fails or you see Contact your administrator, contact your IT team for help.

Reset a forgotten personal account password

This replaces a forgotten personal Microsoft account password after you verify ownership.

Open Microsoft’s password-reset page, enter your account identifier, and select Next. Choose an available verification destination, then select Next.

Confirm the requested email or phone details, then select Get code. Enter the code you receive and select Next. Enter your replacement password, then select Next.

Recover access when you cannot receive a code

Losing access to the email address or phone used for verification blocks a password reset through that destination.

Start with Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper, linked from its account recovery help page. If it directs you to account recovery, open the recovery form, preferably from a familiar device and location.

Supply the account you want to recover, a working contact email address, and the requested ownership information, then submit the form. If Microsoft verifies ownership, follow the emailed instructions to regain access and reset your password.

There is a firm limit here: the recovery form cannot bypass two-step verification when all alternate verification methods are unavailable. Microsoft support agents also cannot change account details or bypass verification. If you saved a recovery code earlier, use the route below.

Use a recovery code you saved earlier

You need a valid, previously saved 25-digit Microsoft account recovery code for this method.

  1. 1.Start signing in at account.microsoft.com/account.
  2. 2.Select Other ways to sign in > Use my password.
  3. 3.Choose Forgot password? > Use a different verification option.
  4. 4.Select I don't have any of these.
  5. 5.Enter your saved recovery code when prompted, then follow the password-update instructions. For accounts with two-step verification, Microsoft requires a 30-day wait for these changes to take effect.

Add a password to a passwordless account

A passwordless personal Microsoft account has had its password removed. To create a password again, turn off the passwordless setting.

Sign in to your account’s security settings using an available authentication method. Under Passwordless account, select Turn off, then select Next. Follow the prompts to add a password to the account you use for Microsoft 365.

Start from Outlook.com if you are already signed in

Outlook.com provides another route to the same Microsoft account password settings. Use it in a desktop or large-tablet browser, signed in with the personal account you also use for Microsoft 365.

Select your name or account picture at the top of the page, then choose My profile > Change password. Complete the Microsoft account password-change process. The new password also applies to Microsoft 365 when both services use that account. If this route fails, use account.microsoft.com; if you have forgotten the password, use the personal-account reset process above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my Microsoft 365 password through Windows Settings?

Yes, when Windows uses the same personal Microsoft account and your sign-in configuration supports the option. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Password > Change. Follow the verification and password-entry prompts. If you have forgotten the password, select Forgot my current password to start recovery. Changing your Windows PIN does not change your Microsoft 365 password.

What should I do in Outlook after changing the password?

Open Outlook for Windows. Enter the updated password when requested. This refreshes the app’s sign-in; it does not create a new Microsoft 365 account password.

Can I change a work account password from Microsoft Authenticator?

Yes, Microsoft documents this shortcut for Android when your administrator permits it. Open Microsoft Authenticator. Select your work or school account’s home page. Choose Change password. Complete the requested authentication and the linked password-change form.

How do I change a Microsoft 365 password supplied through GoDaddy?

Sign in at https://productivity.godaddy.com with your email account. Under Manage, select Password. Enter the replacement and repeat it under Confirm password. Update Recovery email. Select Change Password. GoDaddy says changes can take up to 30 minutes.
