Your Xbox email is the Microsoft account alias tied to your Xbox profile, so there is no separate Xbox-only email switch on the console. To change it, add a new alias to the same Microsoft account, make it primary, then sign back in to Xbox with the new address.
Change the email on your Xbox account online
The usual reason this feels confusing is that Xbox uses the email alias on your Microsoft account, not a separate Xbox-only email setting.
Sign in at account.microsoft.com with the current email alias and password for the Microsoft account that owns your Xbox profile.
Open Your info, then choose Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
Select Add email, then add either a new Outlook.com address or an email address you already own.
Select Add alias.
If Microsoft asks you to verify the email address, select Verify and follow the verification instructions sent to that inbox.
Return to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft and select Make primary next to the new address.
After that, use the new email address when signing in to Xbox services.
You can remove the old alias from the same page by selecting Remove, but be careful with Microsoft-domain addresses. Removing an @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com alias can permanently delete that email address from Microsoft systems.
Add a new email alias only
Use this when you want another email address to work for Xbox sign-in without retiring the current one.
Sign in to the Microsoft account used by your Xbox profile.
Open Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
Select Add email.
Add the new address and follow the prompts.
Select Verify if Microsoft asks you to verify the email address.
If this method fails, make sure the address is not already tied to another Microsoft account, then use a new address or a new Outlook.com address instead.
Verify the new email address
Finish verification before relying on the new address for Xbox sign-in.
- 1.Sign in to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
- 2.Look for a Verify button next to the new email alias.
- 3.Select Verify, then choose Send email.
- 4.Open the message Microsoft sends to that inbox.
- 5.Follow the verification link.
- 6.Return to the alias page and select Make primary if you want the new address to become the main Xbox sign-in email.
Keep the old address without using it for sign-in
The most common reason to keep the old address is to avoid losing a Microsoft-domain alias or missing messages that still go there.
After adding and verifying the new alias, go to your Microsoft account sign-in preferences.
Choose which aliases are allowed to sign in to your account.
Turn off sign-in for the old alias if you only want the new address used for sign-in.
Select Save.
If the old address is still primary, return to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft and select Make primary beside the new alias first.
Refresh the account on your Xbox console
This applies after you have changed the alias online but your Xbox console still shows or asks for the old email. The console account screen refreshes profile sign-in; it does not change the Microsoft account email itself.
Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Choose Profile & system, then Add or switch, then Add new.
Enter the new email alias and the password for the same Microsoft account used by your Xbox profile.
To remove the cached profile first, open the guide and go to Profile & system, then Settings, then Account, then Remove accounts.
Choose the profile you want to remove, then confirm.
Sign back in on the Xbox app
This fixes Xbox app sign-in after your Microsoft account email has already been changed online.
On Windows, open the Xbox app.
Select your gamerpic.
Choose Sign Out.
Select Sign In.
Enter the new Microsoft account alias with the same account password.
On mobile, open the Xbox app.
Select your profile picture.
Choose Sign out.
Select Sign in when you open the app again.
Use the updated Microsoft account alias when prompted.
Check the Microsoft Store account on PC
Launch the Xbox app on Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account used for your Xbox profile.
Select your gamerpic.
Open Settings.
Under Account, select Change my Microsoft Store account.
Follow the on-screen instructions and sign in to the Store account you want to use.
This changes the Store account used by the Xbox app on Windows, not the email alias attached to your Xbox profile.
For the actual Xbox email change, use the Microsoft account alias method online.
Fix the account chooser prompt
This applies when the same email address brings up a prompt asking which account you want to use. Microsoft handles this by changing the primary alias on the personal Microsoft account.
Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
Select Make primary for another existing address, or add a new address and make that one primary.
The primary alias is the address shown on devices such as a Windows PC or Xbox, so changing it can clear up that sign-in prompt for the personal account.
Know what Xbox will not transfer
Use alias changes on the original account instead of trying to move the Xbox profile somewhere else.
- 1.You cannot merge personal Microsoft accounts into one account.
- 2.You cannot combine personal Microsoft accounts.
- 3.You cannot transfer an Xbox gamertag, game progress, purchases, balance, or profile data to another Microsoft account.
- 4.You cannot add an email address that is already another current or closed Microsoft account as an alias.
Keep the Microsoft account that owns the Xbox profile, then change its aliases.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my Xbox email from the console settings?
No. Change the Microsoft account alias on the web. Console account options can remove or re-add a profile after the web change, but they do not change the email alias itself.
Will changing the email on my Xbox account delete my games?
No. Changing the alias keeps the same Microsoft account, so the Xbox profile stays on that original account.
Can I use an email that already has its own Microsoft account?
No. Microsoft does not allow another current or closed Microsoft account to be added as an alias. Use a new email address or an address that is not already tied to a Microsoft account.
Should I remove my old Xbox email after making a new one primary?
Only remove it when you no longer need it. Removing a Microsoft-domain alias such as @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com can permanently delete that email address from Microsoft systems.
