Instagram filters are easy to miss because they do not live in one universal menu. Feed posts, Stories, Reels, video calls, and desktop uploads each put them in a different place. Use the right path below for what you are making, and you will get to the filter or effects picker without digging through unrelated settings.

Browse Filters For A Feed Post

Use this when you want a classic Instagram filter on a photo or uploaded media before it appears on your profile grid. These are post filters, not live AR camera effects.

Open Instagram and tap the plus sign icon in the bottom center.

Select the image you want to post, then tap Next.

Tap Filter, then swipe through the filter library along the bottom of the screen.

Tap a filter to preview it.

Tap the sliding adjustment bars icon on the filter thumbnail to adjust the filter strength.

Tap Next, finish the post details, and tap Share.

Find Story Filters After Choosing Media

The most common confusion is that Story filters do not appear in the same place as feed post filters.

Tap the plus sign icon, then choose Story.

Select a photo or video from the bottom-left thumbnail, or capture something new in the Story camera.

Swipe left across the screen to move through the available Story filters and preview each one on your media.

Open The Effects Gallery From The Story Camera

Open Instagram and go to the Story camera by tapping Create, using the plus sign icon, or swiping right from Feed.

Swipe left through the effect icons at the bottom of the camera screen.

Keep swiping until you reach the far-right option.

Tap the magnifying glass icon or Browse effects to open more effects from Instagram.

If your device does not support camera effects, use the regular Story filter swipe after selecting or capturing media.

Search Effects By Name Or Category

Use this when you already know the kind of effect you want, or when the camera tray does not show enough choices. Instagram’s supported effects browser lets you preview effects, browse categories, and search by name.

Open the camera and swipe left through the effect icons at the bottom until you reach Browse effects.

Tap an effect to preview it.

Swipe through the categories to browse by style.

Tap the small magnifying glass to search for an effect by name.

Skip older creator-profile and Meta Spark gallery instructions. Meta removed third-party AR effects built with Meta Spark from Instagram on January 14, 2025, so use Instagram’s supported effects browser instead.

Browse Effects While Making A Reel

Reels have their own effects flow inside the creation screen.

  1. 1.Tap the plus sign icon and choose Reel.
  2. 2.Select frames or record a Reel.
  3. 3.Tap Next if Instagram shows that screen.
  4. 4.Tap the sparkle icon or Effects at the bottom.
  5. 5.Preview effects from the library, then swipe down to exit the library.

The most common reason people miss trending effects is that they stay in the first row of camera effects instead of opening the larger browser.

Open the Story or Reel effect picker and tap the sparkle icon or Effects.

Browse the effects menu, then tap Search.

In the camera effects gallery, tap Trending to see effects Instagram is surfacing now.

From the Reels recording screen, open the tool menu on the left, tap Effects, and swipe up to scroll through popular effects.

Try AI Story Effects

Instagram includes AI-powered Story effects for accounts and regions with Meta AI and Muse Image Story effects. They appear in the Story editing flow after you choose a photo.

Open Your Story or Add to story, then select a photo.

Scroll the effects carousel of thumbnails to see how each effect transforms your photo, and check the New tab inside that carousel for the newest creator-made effects.

Pick an AI effect such as Night Flash, Disposable, Puffer, Paper Doll, or IG Charms.

If nothing in the carousel fits, type your own prompt at the bottom of the composer to build a custom effect. Meta launched this Stories effects experience in the United States only, so it may not be on your account yet.

If AI effects do not appear, use the regular Story effects browser or Reels effects picker.

Use Instagram Filters On Desktop

Desktop Instagram gives you basic upload filters, not the full mobile Story and Reels effects browser.

  1. 1.Go to instagram.com and log in.
  2. 2.Click Create or the plus sign.
  3. 3.Choose Select from computer and pick a photo or video.
  4. 4.Click Next through the crop and edit screens.
  5. 5.Use the Filters section to preview and choose a filter before sharing.

On Windows 10 version 19041.0 or higher, the Microsoft Store Instagram app uses a web-style upload surface. Open Instagram, choose Create, upload a photo or video, and use the edit or filter screen when Instagram shows it.

Fix Missing Camera Effects

This fixes camera permission blocks, outdated app installs, and video-call filter confusion.

On iPhone, open Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then Camera, and turn on Instagram.

On Android, open Settings, go to Security & Privacy, then Privacy, then Permission manager, then Camera.

Choose Instagram and set it to Allow only while using the app.

Update Instagram from the App Store on iPhone by searching for Instagram, opening the listing published by Instagram, Inc., and tapping Update.

Update Instagram from Google Play on Android by searching for Instagram, opening the listing published by Meta Platforms, Inc., and tapping Update.

For video calls, open Messages, choose a chat, start a video call, then tap effects or filters and choose one for the call.

Video-call effects and filters do not work in mobile browsers.
