Blocking someone on Microsoft Teams works differently depending on the account. Teams Free and personal accounts have direct block buttons, while work and school accounts use stricter controls for external and internal chats.

Start with the section that matches where the person contacted you, then use the community, group chat, or admin-managed option when a standard block is not available.

Block Someone in Teams on iPhone or Android

Use this path for Microsoft Teams Free or a personal Teams account on mobile. Open Teams and tap Chat, then find the person you want to block. Tap and hold the person, then tap Block. Tip: blocking stops direct contact in Teams Free, but it does not remove the person from a community.

Block a Contact on Desktop or Web

On a computer, Teams Free gives you two current ways to block a contact. From Chat, hover over the person, open More options, then choose Block.

You can also open People, go to the contact, select More options, and choose Block.

If this method fails, confirm that you are using Teams Free or a personal account, then try the Chat path instead of People.

Stop a Community Member From Contacting You

This fixes direct contact from someone in a Teams Free community. Open Communities, then tap the community and tap the community name. Open Members, then tap Manage.

Tap View profile, then tap Block member's name. Tap Block.

Block a Community Member on Desktop or Web

Use this path when the person is in a Teams Free community and you are on desktop or web. Open Communities and select the community. Select the person's profile picture, open More options, and choose Block contact.

Remove and Block Someone From Your Community

Community owners get a stronger option than a personal block. Remove & Block keeps the member from rejoining or finding that community, but it does not block one-to-one or group chats.

On mobile, open Communities, tap the community, tap the community name, then open Members. Tap Manage, tap the member's name, choose Remove from community, then select Remove & Block.

If this method fails, open the member's profile and use Block member's name so they cannot contact you directly.

Use Blocking in a Work or School Account

Work and school accounts separate outside contacts from people inside your organization.

  1. 1.To block someone outside your organization from the chat list, find the person in Chat, open More options, and choose Block.
  2. 2.To block an outside person from their profile card, hover over their profile picture, open More options, and choose Block contact.
  3. 3.For an outside chat request, choose Block, Delete, or Leave based on the chat type and your organization's settings.
  4. 4.When the pop-up appears, select Report this person to report the sender.
  5. 5.For someone inside your organization, use Block only in a one-to-one chat on Teams desktop or web. This needs Teams Premium, and your admin must set Priority account chat control to On in both Messaging settings and the messaging policy assigned to you.

Leave or Remove Someone From a Group Chat

Use this when the problem is inside a group conversation, not a one-to-one chat. Removing someone from a group chat is not the same as blocking them across Teams.

To remove someone, open a group chat with three or more people and select View and add participants. Go to the person's name, select Remove, then confirm.

The removed person can see past messages, but they cannot send new messages or see future content in that group chat. This works only when the admin setting allows members to remove each other.

To leave the chat yourself on desktop, open the group chat from the chat list, select More options, and choose Leave. On mobile, use the chat header and choose Leave chat, or open More options, then Chat details, then Leave chat.

Avoid Old Blocking Paths

The most common outdated instruction is Settings and more, Settings, Privacy, then Edit blocked contacts. That area is for unblocking with Unblock, not for adding a new blocked contact.

Do not rely on Calls history to block a person. Microsoft documents the call history More actions menu for calling back, chatting, speed dial, adding a contact, and Remove from view, not for blocking someone, so use Chat, People, Communities, a chat request, or the person's profile card instead. Blocking a PSTN phone number is a separate calling feature, and Teams keeps that list under Settings and more, Settings, Privacy, Edit blocked contacts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I block someone on Microsoft Teams personal?

Yes. In Teams Free or a personal Teams account, block a contact from Chat on mobile, desktop, or web. Desktop and web also support blocking from People.

Can I block someone inside my company on Teams?

Yes, when your organization has Teams Premium and your admin has turned on Priority account chat control both org-wide and in your messaging policy. It works in Teams desktop or web and does not apply to group, channel, or meeting chats.

Does blocking someone remove them from a Teams community?

No. Blocking a community member as a contact stops direct contact, but their community messages can remain visible unless a community owner removes them.

Is removing someone from a group chat the same as blocking them?

No. Removing someone from a group chat stops them from sending new messages or seeing future content in that chat, but it does not block them across Teams.
