If your Google Pixel 9 Pro XL screen stays black and won’t turn on, you’re not dealing with something unusual for this model. I’ve seen this happen for a handful of reasons, and most of them are fixable right now without a trip to the shop. Let’s work through the likely culprits in order.
Force restart first
Don’t assume it’s a hardware failure yet. The Pixel 9 Pro XL sometimes gets stuck in a deep sleep or a temporary system crash that a regular power button press won’t fix.
Press and hold the Power button and the Volume up button at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the Restart option appear on screen, you might need to hold for 15 to 30 seconds. Tap Restart and see if the phone comes back to life.
Is the battery completely drained?
A dead battery can look exactly like a black screen, especially if you haven’t charged it in a while. Plug your Pixel 9 Pro XL into a wall charger using the original Google USB-C cable and leave it for at least 20 minutes before trying to power it up again.
If you see the battery icon appear during charging, you’re fine, just let it charge. If nothing shows, the issue might be with the charging setup rather than the phone itself.
Try a different cable and charger
The Pixel 9 Pro XL has a known quirk: the original Google cable can stop working properly. Switching to a different high-quality USB-C cable, like the one from an iPad or a certified third-party brand, often fixes the charging problem.
Also, not all chargers play nice with Google’s fast charging. The phone needs a USB-C PD charger capable of at least 37W to charge at full speed, but even a lower-wattage charger should still power it on slowly. If you see a “Check charging accessory” notification, that’s a clear sign the cable or charger isn’t compatible. Try a different wall adapter too.
Turn off smart charging settings
Smart charging features on Android 14 can sometimes interfere with normal battery behavior. If your phone is plugged in but refuses to turn on, it’s worth disabling these temporarily.
If the device is on but screen is black (which happens), press and hold Power + Volume Up for a second to bring up the power menu. You can also use the force restart method to get it responsive. Once it’s on, go to Settings > Battery > Battery health and turn off any smart charging or adaptive charging toggles.
Use Google's supported recovery path
Skip the old recovery-cache wipe step on Pixel. If the phone can boot, restart it, check Settings > System > Software update, check Storage, and use Safe mode to test whether a downloaded app is causing the problem.
If the phone still will not boot, stays on the logo, or keeps restarting, Google's documented button-based recovery path is a factory reset from Fastboot/Recovery. That erases the phone, so use it only as a last resort after non-destructive steps and backups have been considered.
Boot into Safe Mode to check for app conflicts
Sometimes a bad app that starts automatically can prevent the phone from fully booting up. Safe Mode loads only the core system software, so if your phone works there, you know a third-party app is the troublemaker.
To enter Safe Mode on the Pixel 9 Pro XL, press and hold the Power button until you see the power menu. Then touch and hold the Power off icon until the Safe Mode prompt appears, tap to restart into Safe Mode. If the screen works normally in Safe Mode, uninstall any recently downloaded apps that might have caused the issue.
Try wireless charging
The Pixel 9 Pro XL supports Qi wireless charging up to 23W. If the USB-C port is damaged or the cable is acting up, wireless charging can bypass those problems entirely.
Place the phone on a Qi wireless charger for at least 15 minutes. If the screen lights up or you feel the vibration of a notification, you’ve confirmed a hardware charging port issue. After that, you can still use the phone wirelessly until the port can be repaired.
Factory reset (last resort)
If you’ve tried everything and the screen is still black, a factory reset might clear whatever software corruption is stuck deep in the system. Important: this wipes all your data, including photos, messages, and accounts.
To do this from recovery mode, follow the same steps as wiping the cache, but this time select Factory data reset instead. Confirm with the Power button and wait for the process to finish. After reboot, the phone should start fresh, and hopefully with a working display.
