Your Google Pixel 10a screen goes black but the phone might still be running. The display could have crashed, the battery could be drained, or a hardware issue might be at play. Start with the most common fix and work through the rest.
Force Restart Your Pixel 10a
Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds. If that doesn't work, press and hold Power + Volume Down together for 10 15 seconds until you feel a vibration and the Google logo appears. This is a hard reset that restarts the phone even if the system is frozen. It's the first thing to try on any Android 16 device, and it works most of the time.
Check the Power and Charging Setup
A drained battery looks exactly like a black screen. Plug your Pixel 10a into the included USB-C cable and a 45W USB-C PPS charger for fastest results. Leave it alone for at least 15 30 minutes. If nothing shows up, swap the cable and charger, faulty or non‑compliant USB-C cables are a known cause of charging failures. You can also try a Qi wireless charger as a backup if wired charging isn't working. The Pixel 10a supports Qi at up to 10W, so it's worth a shot while you sort out the cable issue.
Clean the USB-C Port
Pocket lint and debris love to collect inside USB-C ports. A tight connection may still look fine but fail to deliver power. Gently clean the port with a wooden toothpick or a can of compressed air. Don't use anything metal, you can short the pins. After cleaning, plug the charger back in and wait a couple of minutes to see if the screen lights up.
Let an Overheating Phone Cool Down
The Pixel 10a has built‑in thermal protection. If the phone got too hot, from direct sunlight, heavy gaming, or rapid charging, it may shut down the display and refuse to charge until it cools. Set the phone on a flat, non‑conductive surface in a cool room. Wait 20 30 minutes before trying to power it on. If it starts up but the screen stays dark, skip ahead to the display check below.
Check for Physical Display Damage
Look closely at the screen for cracks, black blobs, or visible impact marks. If the phone vibrates when you get notifications, plays sounds, or responds to Google Assistant ("Hey Google, turn up brightness"), the phone is on but the display hardware may be damaged. A screen replacement is the only fix in that case, either through Google or a trusted repair shop.
Try Recovery Mode from a Computer
If the screen stays black and force restarts haven't helped, connect your Pixel 10a to a computer using the USB-C cable. If the computer recognizes the phone (you might hear a USB connect sound), open a browser and go to pixelrepair.withgoogle.com, Google’s official repair tool. It can reflash the firmware without wiping your data. If the computer doesn't see the phone, boot into recovery mode: press and hold Power + Volume Down until you see the bootloader menu, then use volume keys to select Recovery mode and press Power. From there, you can wipe the cache partition (no data loss) or factory reset (all data erased) as a last resort.
A black screen on the Pixel 10a usually comes down to one of these causes. Start with the force restart, clean the port, and check your charger. Most problems are solved by a simple cable swap or a quick cool‑down. If the display hardware is damaged, a replacement is the only path forward.
