The Echo Show 21 stops responding to voice commands, the screen shows the blue bar but nothing happens, or the camera auto-framing just can't keep up. Usually this is a software or network snag, not a hardware failure, and it's something you can fix in a few minutes.
The fastest thing to try: unplug the power adapter from the back of the Show 21, wait a full 30 seconds (the internal capacitors need that time to drain), then plug it back in. The screen goes dark for a moment, boots back up with the blue LED ring, and the wake word should work again within about a minute.

Check the Microphone and Camera Buttons
The Echo Show 21 has a physical mic mute button on the top edge. When it's activated, the screen shows a red microphone icon and the light ring shows a red bar segment. Tap it once to unmute. While you're at it, check the camera shutter, if the camera is physically covered or disabled, some Alexa features that rely on motion detection might behave differently. The mic is the one that usually gets toggled by accident.
Open the Alexa App and Check Device Status
Open the Alexa app on your phone and tap Devices, then find your Echo Show 21. If it shows as offline, the Wi-Fi connection is the bottleneck. If it shows online but the device still won't respond, the wake-word service is hung. In either case, the soft restart above should have been step one. If the app still shows offline, move to the Wi-Fi fix next.
Reconnect to Wi-Fi
The Echo Show 21 supports Wi-Fi 6E, which means it can operate on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz bands. If your router broadcasts separate SSIDs for each band, the Show 21 might have latched onto one that your router has quietly dropped. In the Alexa app, go to your device's Settings > Wireless > Change. Pick your 5 GHz network during setup, it's the most reliable band for smart home devices. Once connected, the router will decide if the device should roam to 6 GHz.
Force a Firmware Check
Amazon pushes Echo Show firmware updates silently when the device is idle. The tricky part is that a Show 21 can get stuck mid-update and go unresponsive until the install finishes. Leave the device plugged in and untouched for 30 minutes. During that time it checks Amazon's update server and downloads anything pending. After that, unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it back in, the firmware installs during the boot cycle. This handles most update-related freezes.
Disable a Misbehaving Skill
If the Show 21 responds to some commands but not others, or if the screen hangs after a specific request, a third-party Skill is likely hanging the device. The 21-inch panel has had interface scaling issues with older Skills, so this is a known pain point. In the Alexa app, go to More > Skills and Games > Your Skills. Look for anything recently enabled or updated, disable it, and test the wake word again. If responsiveness comes back, that Skill was the problem.
Check Alexa+ Rollout Status
The Echo Show 21 supports Alexa+, Amazon's generative AI assistant. It's available free with Prime or as a $19.99/month standalone subscription in the US, and it's rolling out in phases. Open the Alexa app, go to More > Settings > Alexa+. If your account is enrolled but the device says "Not yet enabled," toggle it off and back on for this specific device. That sometimes pushes the activation through on the next sync cycle.
Troubleshoot Fire TV Mode Drops
One of the Show 21's known quirks: the built-in Fire TV mode can drop back to the home screen after extended use. If you notice the screen jumping back mid-stream or the voice remote stops responding during playback, this is likely the culprit. A soft restart (unplug for 30 seconds) typically restores it for a solid session. If it keeps happening, check that your Fire TV Alexa Voice Remote has fresh batteries, the remote itself can throw things off if its connection is weak.
While you're at it, check the picture frame mode. The Show 21's frame mode resets its photo source after firmware updates, so if you had it set to a specific Amazon Photos album, verify that your source is still selected under Settings > Home Screen > Photo Display. A lost photo source won't break voice commands, but it's an easy fix that feels like a bug.
Factory Reset the Echo Show 21
If nothing else has worked, a factory reset will clear everything, Skills, routines, Wi-Fi settings, picture frame configuration, and Alexa+ enrollment. On the Show 21, go to Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults. The screen goes dark, then boots back to the setup screen. You'll need to go through the Alexa app setup process from scratch. This is the nuclear option, but it catches the kind of corrupted settings that normal restarts can't touch.
Before you reset, note that the 13MP camera's auto-framing can be slow when tracking multiple people in a room, that's a known limitation of the hardware, not a bug that a reset will fix. If the camera lag is your only complaint, skip the reset and adjust your expectations instead.
Reboot Your Wi-Fi Router
If other smart devices in your home are also acting up, the router is the common thread. Unplug it for a full 60 seconds (longer than you'd think is necessary), plug it back in, and give it a good three minutes to stabilize. The Echo Show 21 should reconnect automatically. Wi-Fi 6E is great when it works, but it can also introduce roaming issues that a simple router reboot straightens out.
If the Show 21 still ignores commands after all of this, the hardware is the likely issue. The mic array or the mainboard may be physically failing.
