When the microphone on your CMF Phone 2 Pro stops picking up your voice, it can turn simple calls, voice notes, and video chats into a frustrating experience. The issue could be anything from a blocked mic port to a software setting in Nothing OS. Let's start by figuring out exactly which microphone is acting up.
If you are not sure whether the mic is dead or just misconfigured, open a quick mic test first. A moving level meter means the hardware is healthy, which rules out the worst case before you touch any settings.
Test Your CMF Phone 2 Pro Microphone
Open the Voice Recorder app that comes pre-installed on your phone. Tap the record button and speak normally for about 10 seconds. Play it back to see if your voice is clear or muffled.
You can also make a quick test call to your voicemail. Speak a sentence and listen to the playback. If the other person in a call can't hear you, but these recordings sound fine, the issue might be with a specific app.
Try using the Google Assistant by saying "Hey Google" or holding the power button. If it doesn't respond to your voice, it points to a system-wide microphone problem.
Remove Any Case or Accessory
The CMF Phone 2 Pro's unique modular back is cool for customization, but sometimes an accessory or a third-party case can accidentally cover a microphone pinhole. Take off any case or add-on and test the mic again.
Pay close attention to the small microphone openings. You'll typically find one near the USB-C charging port at the bottom and another up near the top edge of the phone. Make sure nothing is obstructing them.
Disconnect Bluetooth Audio Devices
If you have wireless earbuds or a Bluetooth headset connected, your phone will route all audio, including the microphone, through that device. Go into your Quick Settings panel and turn Bluetooth off, or manually disconnect the audio device from the Bluetooth menu.
This is a common culprit, especially if people say you sound distant on calls only sometimes. I've seen this fix more microphone issues than you'd think.
Check App Permissions in Nothing OS
Android 15 and Nothing OS require explicit permission for apps to use your microphone. If an app like WhatsApp, Zoom, or your camera can't hear you, this is the first place to look.
Go to Settings > Apps, select the problematic app, then tap Permissions. Find the Microphone permission and make sure it's set to "Allow" instead of "Deny." You can also go directly via Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Microphone to see a list of all apps and their access.
Force Restart Your Phone
A simple reboot can clear out temporary software glitches that might be affecting the audio subsystem. Press and hold the power button on the side of your CMF Phone 2 Pro for about 10 seconds, or until you see the Nothing logo appear as the phone restarts.
This is different from just turning the screen off and on. It fully reboots the system and is a great first step for any odd behavior.
Clean the Microphone Openings
Lint from your pocket or dust can easily clog those tiny microphone pinholes. Shine a light on the openings at the bottom and top of your phone. If you see any debris, don't use a metal pin or compressed air, as you could damage the internal mic.
Instead, gently brush the area with a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush or use a bit of sticky tack to pull dust out. Be very gentle around these areas.
Update Nothing OS
Software updates often include fixes for audio and hardware communication bugs. Nothing is pretty good about pushing regular updates for their OS. To check, go to Settings > System > System update.
Tap "Check for update" and install any available update. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least a 50% charge, or better yet, plug it into that 33W charger you bought separately.
Reset App Preferences
This is a useful middle-ground step that resets all your app permissions, notification settings, and default apps without deleting any personal data. It can fix conflicts where one app's settings are interfering with another.
Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Tap on Reset app preferences and confirm. You'll need to re-grant microphone permissions to apps the next time you use them, but it often clears up weird issues.
Check for Water or Physical Damage
The CMF Phone 2 Pro has some basic protection, but it's not fully waterproof. If the phone has been exposed to moisture or had a recent drop, liquid could have damaged the microphone components.
Look for any signs of moisture in the USB-C port or around the seams. If you suspect water damage, power the phone off completely and leave it in a dry, warm place for at least 24 hours before trying to use it again.
Perform a Factory Reset
If every other step has failed, a factory reset is the last software fix. This will erase all data on your phone, so it's absolutely critical to back up everything important first using Google Drive or your preferred method.
Once backed up, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). Follow the prompts to reset the phone. After it reboots, set it up as new and immediately test the microphone before restoring your apps and data.
