A CMF Phone 2 Pro with an unresponsive touchscreen is incredibly frustrating. The screen might be stuck on an app, the lock screen, or just black. In my experience, this is almost always a temporary software hiccup that you can fix yourself without losing any photos or data.
Force Restart Your CMF Phone 2 Pro
This is the first and most effective thing to try. Simply press and hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds. Keep holding it until you see the Nothing logo appear on the screen. The phone will reboot and should be responsive again, and this process doesn't delete any of your personal files or settings.
Let the Phone Sit for a Few Minutes
Sometimes the phone isn't truly frozen, it's just working hard on a background task. This could be installing a system update, processing photos, or an app that's stuck. If the back of the phone feels warm, that's a good sign it's still active. Give it five to ten minutes to see if it sorts itself out before you try a force restart.
Plug It Into a Charger
A completely drained battery can make the phone seem dead or frozen. Grab a USB-C cable and a compatible charger. For the fastest results, use a charger that supports 33W USB-PD, which is the CMF Phone 2 Pro's maximum speed. Let it charge for at least 15-20 minutes before trying to turn it on again.
Since the phone doesn't come with a charger in the box, make sure you're using a good quality one. A weak or faulty charger might not provide enough stable power for the phone to boot properly if the battery was critically low.
Close the Problem App
If the touchscreen works everywhere except in one specific app, that app is likely the culprit. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold to bring up the recent apps menu. Find the frozen app and swipe it up to close it completely. Then, try opening it again from your app drawer.
If that same app keeps causing freezes, head to the Google Play Store to check for an update. As a last resort, you can uninstall and reinstall the app, which often clears up any corrupted data causing the problem.
Check Your Available Storage
When your phone's storage is almost full, the operating system has no room to create temporary files it needs to run smoothly. This can lead to freezing and lag. If you can get into settings, go to Settings > Storage to see how much space you have left.
Try to free up at least 3-4 GB by deleting old downloads, clearing app caches, or offloading videos and photos to the cloud. The clean, lightweight Nothing OS helps, but it still needs breathing room to function properly.
Install the Latest Software Update
Software bugs are a common cause of touchscreen issues, and updates frequently include patches for these problems. After you've restarted your phone, go to Settings > System > System update to check for and install any available updates for Nothing OS.
Keeping your phone updated is one of the best ways to prevent stability issues. The modular design with swappable back accessories is a cool feature, but the core software is what keeps everything running smoothly.
Reset All System Settings
If freezes keep happening after a restart, a system setting might have become corrupted. You can reset these without touching your personal data. Navigate to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset all settings.
This will revert your Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth connections, and display preferences back to default, but your apps, photos, and messages will remain safe. It's a useful step to clear out any software gremlins causing repeated lock-ups.
Cool Down an Overheating Phone
The CMF Phone 2 Pro's plastic back panel can sometimes feel warm during heavy use. If the phone gets too hot, it will throttle performance or even freeze to protect its internal components. If it's hot to the touch, take it out of any case, move it away from direct sunlight, and let it cool down for 15-20 minutes.
Avoid using intensive apps or charging the phone while it's overheating. Letting it return to a normal temperature will often resolve the unresponsiveness.
Perform a Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If nothing else works and the phone is constantly frozen, a factory reset is the final step. Since you likely can't use the touchscreen to do this, you'll need to use the hardware keys. First, power the phone off completely if you can.
Then, press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button together until the Nothing logo appears. Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset" and the power button to select it. This will erase everything on the phone, so it's only for situations where the device is completely unusable.
