A frozen ASUS ROG Phone 9, with its screen stuck on a game or the ROG logo, can be incredibly frustrating. The phone might not respond to taps, swipes, or even the power button. In my experience, this is almost always a temporary software hiccup that you can resolve without losing your data or game progress.

Force Restart Your ROG Phone 9

This is the go-to fix for most unresponsive phones. Simply press and hold the Power button for at least 15 seconds. Keep holding it even if the screen stays black. You should feel a vibration and see the ROG boot animation as the phone restarts. This is a safe, first step that doesn't erase anything.

Let the Phone Cool Down

The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is a powerhouse, but it can generate significant heat during long gaming sessions. If your phone feels very warm and then freezes, it might be throttling performance or locking up to protect itself. Move it to a cooler spot, take it out of its case, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before trying to turn it back on.

Check Your Charging Setup

Plug your phone into its original 65W charger and cable. A weak or faulty charger can cause power instability that leads to freezing. Wait for about 10 minutes. If the battery was critically low, the phone needs a minimum charge before it can properly boot. Also, try a different USB-C cable if you have one handy.

Close a Problematic App

If the freeze seems isolated to one app, you can force close it. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold to enter the recent apps view. Find the frozen app and swipe it all the way up to close it. If a specific game or app keeps causing freezes, head to the Google Play Store to check for an update or clear its cache in Settings > Apps.

Free Up Internal Storage

Phones need free space to operate smoothly. If your storage is nearly full, the system can freeze. Go to Settings > Storage to see how much space is left. I'd recommend keeping at least 5-10 GB free, especially since game files and recordings on this phone can be huge. Delete old videos or unused apps to clear room.

Update Your System Software

ASUS releases updates to fix bugs and improve stability. After a restart, go to Settings > System > System update to check for and install any available updates. If the phone freezes during an update, the force restart method above usually resolves it and you can try the update again.

Use X Sense for Game Management

Your ROG Phone 9 has a dedicated game mode called X Sense. If freezes happen primarily while gaming, open the Armoury Crate app and check your X Sense settings. You can optimize performance and cooling profiles here. Also, enable Bypass Charging when gaming while plugged in to reduce heat buildup from charging.

Reset All Settings

If freezes keep happening randomly, a system setting might be corrupted. You can reset them without touching your personal data. On OnePlus, go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Reset all settings; Pixel, Motorola, Nothing, and ASUS phones have no Reset all settings option, so go to Settings > System > Reset options and use Reset app preferences or Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi instead. This will revert Wi-Fi passwords, wallpapers, and sound settings back to default, but it often clears up persistent software glitches.

Consider a Factory Reset (Last Resort)

For a phone that is constantly unresponsive, a factory reset is the final software step. First, ensure all important data is backed up. Then, with the phone powered on, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). If the phone is too frozen to access settings, you can often trigger reset by holding Volume Up + Power while turning it on to enter recovery mode.

For minor freezes, try disabling the AniMe Vision matrix display on the back. It's a cool feature, but it does use extra battery and system resources. You can turn it off in the Armoury Crate settings under the AniMe Vision menu to see if it improves general system stability.
