WhatsApp Testing Local Chat Transfer Between Devices

In the past, WhatsApp has been known for avoiding the addition of too many features to its app, but in recent times, the company has been on a feature-adding spree. Following the recent release of the ability to use the same account on multiple devices, WhatsApp is now testing a new feature that would allow users to transfer chats between devices without using Google Drive.

The local chat transfer option was discovered a few months ago and is currently available for some users of the WhatsApp beta app. To transfer chats between devices, a QR code is scanned, similar to how WhatsApp can be added to multiple devices. While it remains unclear whether the feature transfers both chat messages and media, or just messages, it is assumed that both will be transferred.

The transfer likely takes place over Wi-Fi Direct, which is a fast connection method. The feature can be accessed from the Chats section of the app's settings and is currently available on WhatsApp beta version 2.23.9.19.

It is unknown when the feature will be available to all WhatsApp users as the company typically takes its time to test new functionality thoroughly. However, the option to transfer chats locally should come as a welcome addition to many users, who can benefit from the convenience of moving their chats between devices without relying on Google Drive.
