When the flashlight on your Sony Xperia 1 VI won't turn on, it's a surprisingly frustrating hiccup. You might tap the Quick Settings tile and nothing happens, or the camera flash refuses to fire. Let's get that light working again.
Close the Camera App
The flashlight and the camera flash use the same physical LED. If your camera app is open, even just running in the background, the system locks that hardware for camera use. Swipe up from the bottom to see your recent apps and swipe the Camera app away to fully close it. The flashlight tile should become responsive right away.
Force Restart Your Xperia
A quick reboot clears out the temporary software glitch that's likely preventing the LED from activating. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button together for about ten seconds. You'll feel the phone vibrate and see the Sony logo as it restarts. This is my go-to first step for any odd behavior.
Check Stamina Mode
While Stamina Mode is designed to save battery by limiting background activity, it shouldn't outright disable the flashlight. However, it can sometimes interfere with system responsiveness. Pull down your notification shade twice and look for the Stamina Mode icon, or go to Settings > Battery > Battery Saver to turn it off. Test the torch immediately after.
Let Your Phone Cool Down
Modern phones like the Xperia 1 VI will throttle or disable features if they overheat to prevent damage. If the device feels warm to the touch, especially after gaming or using the camera, set it down in a cooler spot for 10-15 minutes. The flashlight function will typically restore itself once the internal temperature drops back to a safe range.
Use Google Assistant to Toggle It
Say "Hey Google, turn on the flashlight" or hold the power button to activate Assistant. If the voice command works but the Quick Settings tile doesn't, you've isolated the problem to a minor interface bug. You can use Assistant to turn it off and on again, which sometimes resets the system's control over the LED.
Adjust the Flashlight Brightness
On your Xperia, press and hold the flashlight tile in the Quick Settings panel. A small menu should pop up letting you adjust the brightness level. Slide it all the way to the brightest setting. If it was accidentally set to the dimmest level, you might not see the light in a well-lit room.
Update Your Software
Head to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update." Sony has addressed various camera and system stability issues in past updates for their Xperia line. Installing the latest software can patch the specific bug that's locking your flashlight.
Reset App Preferences
This is a useful middle-ground reset that won't delete your personal data. It resets permissions and default apps. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Menu (three dots) > Reset app preferences. Confirm the action. This can clear any incorrect system settings that are affecting hardware access for the flashlight.
Test the Camera Flash
Open your Camera app and switch to a photo mode, then try to take a picture with the flash forced on. If the flash doesn't fire during a photo either, the issue is almost certainly with the LED hardware itself. Since this is a 2024 device, it's worth contacting Sony support or your retailer to explore repair options under warranty.
