Seeing the Settings app crash on your Nothing Phone (3) can stop you from adjusting anything on your device. This usually happens due to a temporary software glitch or corrupted app data. Let's get it working again.

Force Restart Your Phone

This is the quickest fix and often solves the problem immediately. A force restart clears the phone's temporary memory and stops any stuck processes.

Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button together for about 10 to 15 seconds. Keep holding until you see the Nothing logo appear on the screen, then release. Your phone will boot up fresh.

Clear the Settings App Cache

Cache files help the Settings app load quickly, but they can become corrupted. Clearing them forces the app to rebuild this data from scratch.

Since the Settings app itself is crashing, you'll need to access this menu through a different path. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the notification shade, then tap the gear icon in the top right. If that also crashes, go to your app drawer and find the "Settings" app icon, then press and hold it. Tap "App info" from the pop-up menu.

In the App info screen, tap on "Storage & cache." On the next screen, tap "Clear cache." Don't select "Clear storage" or "Clear data" at this point, as that will reset all your settings to default.

Check for a Software Update

Nothing regularly releases updates for Nothing OS that fix bugs and improve stability. An outdated system can have conflicts that cause core apps like Settings to misbehave.

You can try accessing the update menu through the notification shade shortcut. If that fails, you might need to use the phone's recovery mode. First, ensure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery. To check manually, you can sometimes ask the Google Assistant by saying, "Hey Google, check for system updates."

If an update is available, install it. Your phone will restart as part of the process, which can also clear up the underlying issue causing the crash.

Boot Into Safe Mode

Safe mode temporarily disables all third-party apps you've downloaded. If the Settings app works fine in safe mode, you know a recently installed app is causing the conflict.

To enter safe mode, press and hold the power button until the power off menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" text on the screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to safe mode, tap "OK." Your phone will restart with "Safe mode" visible in the bottom corner.

Test the Settings app now. If it opens without crashing, you'll need to identify the problematic app. Restart your phone normally to exit safe mode, then try uninstalling apps you installed just before the problem started, one by one.

Reset App Preferences

This resets all your app-related settings, like permissions, default apps, and background data restrictions, back to their original state. It won't delete any personal app data.

Navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right and select "Reset app preferences." Confirm your choice. After the reset, you'll need to re-grant permissions to apps when you use them next, but this can resolve conflicts affecting system apps.

Consider a Factory Reset

If none of the other steps work, a factory reset is the final software solution. This will erase everything on your phone and return it to its out-of-the-box state, so a full backup is essential first.

Since the Settings app is unstable, you may need to use recovery mode to perform the reset. Turn off your phone completely. Then, press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button together until the Nothing logo appears, then release. Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset" and press the power button to select it.

Confirm the reset. Once it's complete, select "Reboot system now." Set up your phone as new to see if the problem is resolved before restoring your backup.
