WhatsApp is rolling out calling on WhatsApp Web so users can make and receive audio and video calls, including one-on-one and group sessions, straight from the browser. The company says the update also brings call transfer, background noise suppression, and related tools meant to simplify calling across devices.
No separate app download is required for web calling. That keeps the experience available on shared computers, work laptops that block installs, or any setup where staying in the browser is simpler.
Web calls remain end-to-end encrypted, carry no time limits, and incur no cost, matching the private calling experience WhatsApp describes on its other clients.
Browser sessions gain capabilities already familiar from phones and tablets. Users get screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab that surfaces full call history and favorites without leaving the page.
Call transfer lets people move an active group call from one device to another without hanging up. A call started on a mobile device or tablet can shift to WhatsApp Web or Desktop for a larger screen, and the reverse path works the same way when heading back out.
Group organizers get a waiting room when they create a WhatsApp call link with require-approval-to-join enabled. Participants stay in that room until the host admits them, giving tighter control over who enters and when.
Video quality at the start of a call is getting a lift through QuickHD, which WhatsApp says delivers high-definition video in the first few seconds. Noise suppression is also live to cut background sound in loud or busy settings so the speaker’s voice stays clear, and it can be toggled anytime in in-call settings.
These features are rolling out gradually and will be available to everyone soon, according to WhatsApp.
