PlayStation's parent company has acquired a UK artificial intelligence specialist to boost next-generation game visuals through machine learning technology.
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its acquisition of Cinemersive Labs on April 2, bringing the London-based computer vision team into its Visual Computing Group. The startup, founded in 2022, specializes in transforming 2D images into volumetric 3D experiences using AI-driven technology.
The Cinemersive team will focus on applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals and rendering techniques for PlayStation titles. Their work aims to "unlock new levels of visual fidelity for players," according to Sony's announcement.
This move follows recent studio closures including Bluepoint Games in February and Dark Outlaw Games in March, suggesting a pivot toward technology infrastructure over traditional development.
Cinemersive Labs previously developed Parallax, a VR application that converts photographs into explorable three-dimensional environments. The technology supports platforms including Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro, demonstrating cross-platform compatibility that could benefit PlayStation's broader ecosystem.
Sony's Visual Computing Group launched an initiative last year to explore novel rendering and streaming approaches. The Cinemersive acquisition expands that group's capabilities with neural network expertise specifically tailored for game graphics enhancement.
Financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, and no specific games or products were identified as immediate targets for the technology integration. The acquisition represents Sony's continued investment in machine learning for graphics performance optimization across current PlayStation 5 hardware and future console generations.
