Realtor.com has launched a home search planning app within ChatGPT, joining Zillow and Redfin in betting on OpenAI's platform despite reports of sluggish adoption for third-party integrations.
The new app allows users to ask questions about home affordability, neighborhoods, and housing options through natural language conversations. It then intentionally routes serious buyers back to Realtor.com's main platform to explore listings in detail and connect with agents.
This integration arrives as OpenAI's ChatGPT app store faces challenges six months after launch, according to industry reports. The platform has struggled to gain traction with developers who must hand over customer relationships and payments to OpenAI.
Realtor.com built its ChatGPT tool specifically for what it calls the "pre-search" phase, targeting first-time homebuyers who are often overwhelmed during early planning stages.
Users can calculate affordability budgets, compare neighborhoods, and get guidance before transitioning to traditional property searches.
The company emphasizes strict data protections for its integration. Listings viewed within ChatGPT will only show previews of property details, and MLS data is prohibited from being used to train the chatbot's AI models.
This addresses concerns from real estate professionals about data security in AI platforms.
"We built the Realtor.com app in ChatGPT to capture what we call the 'pre-search' phase, a window where curiosity turns into a plan," said Mickey Neuberger, chief consumer and marketing officer at Realtor.com. "By engaging them early with industry leading insights. We can guide them toward their next step."
Realtor.com follows competitors who entered the ChatGPT ecosystem earlier. Zillow introduced the first real estate app in October 2025, followed by Redfin in February 2026.
All three companies now offer similar conversational interfaces for early-stage home search planning.
According to a recent company survey cited by Realtor.com, 82% of Americans are using AI tools for real estate insights, though real estate agents remain the most trusted source of housing information.
The company sees this as an opportunity to meet consumers where they're experimenting with new technology while maintaining professional connections.
"For 30 years, Realtor.com has led every major technology shift in how Americans search for homes," said Damian Eales, CEO of Realtor.com. "With OpenAI. We will meet home buyers wherever they are, keeping the real estate professional central to the experience."
The Realtor.com ChatGPT app is available starting today to all ChatGPT users through OpenAI's platform.
