A fundamental redesign of mobile connectivity hardware promises to eliminate the bottlenecks that frustrate smartphone users when they move away from their routers or try to handle demanding AI tasks.

Qualcomm announced its FastConnect 8800 Mobile Connectivity System at MWC 2026 this week, marking the first mobile chip to combine Wi-Fi 8, Bluetooth 7, Ultra Wideband (UWB), and Thread wireless technologies in a single package.

The system introduces a new 4×4 radio configuration that doubles the antenna count compared to previous generations' standard 2×2 setup.

This architectural shift enables peak speeds up to 11.6 Gbps and extends gigabit-range coverage by three times over current FastConnect chips. At typical distances from access points, throughput increases by up to 40% while latency drops by 2.5 times during peak usage periods.

Power efficiency receives equal attention with an intelligent optimization feature set that reduces daily energy consumption on routers by up to 30%. The system uses a 6nm process node for tighter integration and better thermal management.

Beyond raw performance numbers, Qualcomm introduces Proximity AI technology that fuses UWB, Bluetooth channel sounding, and Wi-Fi ranging data to provide centimeter-level accuracy for locating devices within personal spaces.

While primarily targeting premium smartphones initially, the platform will also benefit high-end tablets, laptops, and robotics applications where spatial awareness matters.

Complementing the mobile client solution are five Dragonwing Networking Platforms designed for routers and access points. The Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite features a 5×5 Wi-Fi 8 radio system for enterprise deployments and premium home networks, while other variants add fiber access capabilities or target mainstream mesh systems.

Sampling of all Wi-Fi 8 solutions has begun with commercial products expected to reach consumers in late 2026.
