OpenAI's first piece of hardware is a macro pad for its Codex coding assistant, not the consumer AI device many expected. The company teased the accessory on June 29 with a July 15 launch date, confirming a partnership with keyboard maker Work Louder.
The teaser, posted to X by the OpenAI Developers account, shows a compact square device with multiple programmable buttons and the caption "Your favourite Codex shortcuts are getting an upgrade." The silhouette matches Work Louder's Creator Micro 2, a macro pad with mechanical keys, a joystick, and touch-sensitive controls.
This is OpenAI's first branded hardware, but it is separate from the long-rumored consumer device being developed with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. OpenAI has previously said that product remains on track for the second half of 2026, with Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane confirming the timeline at Axios House Davos earlier this year.
Work Louder has a track record of custom macro pads for software companies. The brand previously partnered with Figma to create application-specific shortcut devices, and the Codex Micro is expected to follow the same playbook: a physical controller tailored for coding workflows inside OpenAI's AI-powered development environment.
The July 15 announcement will likely include pricing, availability, and compatibility details. For now, OpenAI's hardware strategy runs on two tracks: a niche developer tool arriving in weeks, and a mainstream consumer device still in the pipeline for later this year.
