Over 200 million people already ask ChatGPT finance questions every month. Starting today, those questions have real data behind them. OpenAI launched a personal finance tool for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the U.S., letting them connect bank accounts, brokerage accounts, and credit cards directly to the chatbot.
The feature, built on Plaid's financial data infrastructure, supports more than 12,000 institutions including Chase, Fidelity, Schwab, Capital One, Robinhood, and American Express. Once accounts are linked, ChatGPT generates a dashboard showing spending patterns, subscriptions, portfolio performance, and upcoming payments. Users can ask questions like "I feel like I've been spending more recently. Has anything changed?" or "Help me build a plan to buy a house in my area in the next 5 years."
The system draws on OpenAI's GPT-5.5 model, which the company says is stronger at reasoning with context, critical for finance. The rollout follows OpenAI's acquisition of the team behind personal finance startup Hiro in April. Hiro, backed by Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive, brought expertise that OpenAI says was instrumental in building the product. OpenAI is positioning the tool as guidance, not advice. The company says ChatGPT isn't a replacement for professional financial advisors.
Instead, it focuses on planning, pattern identification, and personalized recommendations powered by "Financial memories" that track savings goals, loan obligations, and lifestyle priorities. Intuit support is coming soon, according to OpenAI, which would unlock deeper analysis such as the tax impact of a stock sale or the odds of a credit card approval. The company also hinted at a broader ambition: eventually letting ChatGPT take direct actions like submitting credit card applications or preparing tax estimates through partners.
Privacy controls are built in. Users can disconnect accounts at any time, and synced data is deleted within 30 days after disconnection. Private chats in ChatGPT won't access financial data at all. The feature is limited to ChatGPT Pro subscribers paying $100 per month, available on web and iOS. OpenAI says it wants to improve the product based on Pro user feedback before expanding to the $20-per-month Plus tier. The company worked with finance experts to create a benchmark for the model to improve on personal finance questions.
