Nintendo pushed firmware update 22.5.0 to both the Switch and Switch 2 on June 15, its first system software release since April 2026. The original Switch gets the bulk of the changes: a redesigned eShop layout, dark mode theming, PIN-gated purchase protections, and new video skip controls.
The Switch 1 eShop now adapts its color scheme to match the "Basic Dark" system theme, a quality-of-life fix for a storefront that has grown unwieldy as the library balloons. Users can also set a User-Verification PIN to require confirmation when accessing the eShop or using saved payment methods, adding a layer of purchase protection for families or shared consoles.
Video browsing on the Switch 1 gets a practical upgrade too. ZL and ZR buttons now rewind or advance full-screen videos by 10 seconds in both the eShop and the News section, bringing trailer-watching closer to what users expect from modern streaming platforms.
The Switch 2 side of version 22.5.0 is lighter. Nintendo added Dutch and Russian to the "Text to Speech" language options in Accessibility and expanded the same two languages to the "Change Speech ⇔ Text During GameChat" feature.
Both consoles also received the standard "general system stability improvements" line. The Switch 2's last major firmware arrived in March with "Handheld Mode Boost" and expanded GameChat features about nine months after the console launched.
Nintendo also updated its Nintendo Music app on the same day, adding "Free Roam" tracks from the Mario Kart World soundtrack, including selections from the Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3 playlists. Access requires an active Switch Online subscription.
