Windows 11's search box is getting 4 pixels taller, a change Microsoft accidentally revealed in a preview build changelog before quickly walking it back. The company has not explained why the Taskbar and Start menu search fields need extra vertical space. But the most likely reason is visual alignment with the Ask Copilot search box, an alternative search experience Microsoft is preparing for commercial customers that incorporates Copilot chat directly into the Taskbar UI.

Ask Copilot uses a thicker, narrower search box that differs from the standard Windows Search appearance. A Windows Central report noted the change appears designed to make the default search box match that Copilot-driven look, so both interfaces feel visually consistent.

Four pixels does not sound like much, but side-by-side comparisons show the difference is visible. The taller search box sits closer to the top edge of the Taskbar and pushes content down slightly in the Start menu.

It makes the bar look chunkier, taking up more visible vertical space. The change was spotted in a changelog for a recent Windows 11 Insider Preview build, but a Microsoft engineer confirmed to Windows Central that the tweak is not yet being tested by Insiders. That suggests the company jumped ahead of itself in release notes.

Ask Copilot is currently aimed at commercial customers and must be manually enabled. Most users will not see it right away. The regular search box adjustment, however, will eventually reach all Windows 11 users as Microsoft rolls the change out to Insiders first before making it generally available.

The pixel bump is part of a broader wave of Windows 11 interface testing. Microsoft is also experimenting with Windows 11 version 26H2, expected in the second half of 2026, which adds controls for search layout, update scheduling, and Taskbar positioning. The taller search box may arrive ahead of that update or as part of it.
