A new Windows USB-C feature intended to improve performance is instead forcing Microsoft to block its July security update on Dell PCs after testers discovered the change causes shutdowns, overheating, and battery drain.
Microsoft confirmed it paused KB5101650, the July 14 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, on an undisclosed number of Dell systems. The update patches 570 security flaws and adds recovery features including Point-in-Time Restore, but affected Dell devices won't receive it until a fix lands.
The root cause traces back to the optional June 23 preview update KB5095093. That release introduced a new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface designed to improve USB performance.
Dell identified the incompatibility during testing: the new USB-C interface conflicts with a specific Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver. "Affected devices can potentially experience unexpected shutdowns, poor performance, increased heat, and battery drain," Microsoft noted in an updated support document.
Users can check if their system carries the problematic Intel driver by opening Device Manager and looking for a yellow warning icon under the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant entry. Only Dell PCs running that specific driver on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 are blocked from the update. Other Dell models and non-Dell hardware continue receiving KB5101650 normally.
Microsoft said it plans to release a resolution for affected hardware in the coming days and will lift the safeguard hold once the fix is ready. The company has not announced a specific date.
There was no block on the June optional update that introduced the USB-C change, meaning some Dell users may have already installed the problematic preview build. For everyone else, Windows Update will begin offering KB5101650 to affected Dell systems automatically after the fix ships.
